What's new

Pakistani Senator calls for the development of an indigenous Nuclear Attack Submarine.

Since this is not really a purchase order or technology related news may be we should move this to low visited political section of the website.

I frankly don't even know who this so call politician is/was etc

Defence news normally comes from official channels

This is 5 year old story which the politician is just stating now, its like the politicians had chance to visit a page 5 years ago and they suddenly woke from their slumbering sleep and decided to make a comment in Parliment

PN has been interested in boomers for quite sometime, but it has to be a top tier product for PN to induct it.

They have been working on a miniature reactor, for quite some time. Within the next 12 ~ 18 months (or earlier) it will be ready for installation.

Hull: There are a couple of options:

1) To build one themselves from scratch.

2) Import pre-built sections, and assemble both foreign and domestic tech as per their requirement.

3) Have the hull built in China and have an indigenous Pakistani reactor installed.

4) Lease a sub from China, and gain capability ASAP.

Now lets explore each option in detail:

Option 1
This would be a time consuming process, with a very steep learning curve. Best to avoid it.
Before people start screaming we built the Agousta90B, please keep in mind. that assembly and manufacturing, are two different things.

Option 2
This advantage of this option would be that it will allow a very high degree of customization. But the drawback is the time required, and the "know how" could prove to be an impediment.

Option 3

This would be the shortest route to gaining a semi indigenous capability. At the same time the Pakistani reactor would also give Chinese designers something to improve upon, further cementing ties.

Option 4
PN has operated subs for more than four decades. But operating a nuclear sub is slightly different. Given the level of cooperation between PLAAF and PLA, and how PAF pilots have not only flown PLAAF aircrafts but changed their strategies and op-doctrine, it would be naive to think that this level of cooperation does not exist between the PN & PLAN. It would be safe to assume that PN personnel have spent time on PLAN nuclear subs, and are not only aware of op and tac issues, but fully understand them and have contributed +ve'ly to them.

This would be a game changer and would give PN an overnight capability, while PN exercises Option 2 or 3.

@Rashid Mahmood @The Eagle @war&peace @Horus Your comments please.

If Pakistan leases a chinese SSN, how long would be the lease for?
Can chinese lease Pakistan an SSBN? Or it is just the role change? From attack to stay and hide?

PN should go for the lease option in the interim to acquire operational skills of a nuclear sub like india did with charlie class chakra in 1987.

If Pakistan could lease an SSBN for 5 years from China lets say from 2021 - 2026, Pakistan can develop its first SSBN in next 8 - 10 years from today, while getting operational skills to operate and maintain nuclear sub. In that case Pak dont need to lease an SSN or SSBN now.

That's 800 factories for nuclear industry.
Thats a good number.

How much for an Aircraft? Like JF-17 ?
you are good. But I never carefully research the issue of JF-17. But I do know radar, engine, air-fire control system are imported from China/Russia. jets are for self-defense, there is a market over there.
nuclear submarine is different, there is no market for it. it is strategic weapon, not for sale.
again, NO offense. good luck for the try.

Thanks.

You know we are gonna try.

We do not have another option.

No. 12-16 launch tubes for a Shaheen III type missile would be ideal and doable.
Shaheen III was a disappointment and sea variant slbm S3 would be better due to second strike capability would Pak Ideally needs SLBM ICBMS MIRVed long range with plenty of MIRV warheads to decrease the effectiveness of Enemys ABM...

China and Pakistan are surely friends. But Nuclear Submarine is not something can be traded between friends. China certainly will not be against any try by Pakistan. But I doubted China will transfer these sort of thing to Pakistan unless USA cross the bar too much on Indian nuclear issue.
BTW, no offense, it is just national interest.
I never said a nuclear sub can be traded, i said important stuff that we may find difficult to make ourself. USA has already crossed the bar with giving India all it needs to accelerate its weapons program. Not only that but India can have nuclear trade with anyone while remaining out side NSG. They already joined MTCR which gives them access to missile components. India already tested ICBM and not a peep from US or allies. If this is not crossing bar i wonder what is.
But anyway Pakistan and China already enjoy a level of cooperation where i wouldn't doubt that if a nuclear sub is to be needed it will be there.

Many Chinese always think that Russia lease a nuclear submarine to Inidia is reckless for international politics. Maybe Russian have different mindset, who knows.
It still does not change the fact that India now has a nuclear sub while they are also making their own with Russian support.

1) A 10yrs lease would make sense.

2) My personal opinion is, IF PN decides to lease one today, it could be flying under PN flag in as little as 6 mnths.

1. Price point of 10 yr will be big, it will be sunk cost. India leased akula ssn for 3 years.
2. 6 months seem a bit optimistic imo! Can china spare an ssbn? Or ssn. They may not spare ssbn from active inventory. May be ssn. But that you experts will have better info.

Other imo a very challenging issue will be reliable encrypred communication from the submerged boat to command center. SSBN will be far away anywhere in the world hidden and waiting answers. Firing protocols ! Would they have to be updated for slbm as compared to land based missiles?

That would be great.

It will be a good and wise move to lease the Shang class submarine while making Pakistan's own variant..it is not only a deterrent, it will also serve the purpose of weakening the Indian Navy, forcing it to further split its assets..

could u provide an infographic image in English!?

isn't MIRV tech was, too, an highly ambitious pursuading for Pakistan! BTW, they got it now :big_boss:

Financing is the real problem. Pakistan doesnt afford R&D of a nuclear sub and I dont think KS&EW has enough space and tech to manufacture components of a nuclear sub. While we have to pay billions for purchasing 8 diesel electric subs from China, managing other purchases and projects (potentially JF-17 Block-III) along with developing an indigenous nuclear sub in a limited budget cant be done. So I dont see a nuclear sub in PN fleet in near future.
