Pakistani Senator calls for the development of an indigenous Nuclear Attack Submarine.

. .
Indeed we should. ;) :p:

My prediction is we will have an indigenous nuc-sub in next five years.

.
It was bound to happen on someday and the day has come that even the enemy has speculated the same as Shang class sub induction.

However, there a reason that someone from Parliament has voiced it. What a start of year Ma'Sha'ALLAH. Remember, the visit of Senate defence committee to Naval HQ, Dockyard and opening of PMS Hameed. Pakistan has kept a lot of development in wraps w.r.t. the said development so time is near to pursue it officially and is a necessary counter/stance due to growing threat by the adversary and her defence expenditure along with war mongering approach.

It will be a good and wise move to lease the Shang class submarine while making Pakistan's own variant..it is not only a deterrent, it will also serve the purpose of weakening the Indian Navy, forcing it to further split its assets..

Please also write some more about this and also about the reason. Its "kinda" my subject.

Edited the post however, it was discussed that Pakistan was pursuing this route through firstly working on N-reactor for this type but development halted for while back then but who knows, however behind the curtains, it was pursued again. Indeed, will take time but seems like, ground work is done or the ingredients are almost ready to go for it hence, needed to voice the matter in Parliament so at least ministry of defence will either reply the statement or will feel the pressure for budget etc. Urging for N Sub is not some overnight thought but there is reason.

The program was pursued since long and In'Sha'ALLAH we will succeed as the barriers are falling one by one and our development, growth and need not just because of threatening enemy but the safety of our assets like.CPEC/Gwader describe the dire need as such. Initially, yes we can lease Shang Class and can came up with homebuilt.

Oscar had a thread with lot of observations, findings in this subject as well.

Financing is the real problem. Pakistan doesnt afford R&D of a nuclear sub and I dont think KS&EW has enough space and tech to manufacture components of a nuclear sub. While we have to pay billions for purchasing 8 diesel electric subs from China, managing other purchases and projects (potentially JF-17 Block-III) along with developing an indigenous nuclear sub in a limited budget cant be done. So I dont see a nuclear sub in PN fleet in near future.

That's a great news @Khafee since our political leadership is realising the need for nuclear sub and more importantly the significance of the indigenous development. I think we should use a two or three pronged strategy to address this immediately
  • Lease a couple of nuclear subs from China or Russia for 10-15 years
  • Start acquisition based on ToT
  • Start developing an in-house R&D capacity or expand the current capacity and infrastructure to cater for the needs of the future by training skilled professionals and initiating a project. JV-ventures and collaborations can accelerate process of the skill and infra-structure development

The respected senator Sehar Kamran is a qualified person and an expert on strategic affair as she is the president of the Centre for Pakistan and Gulf Studies (CPGS) and thus she fully understands the significance of a nuclear powered and armed / capable sub for national defence.
