Genome mapping hai kia cheez????? :drag:

It means predicting hereditary and future diseases. Genes can be repaired and modified to bring forth a super human. But its in its infant stage, but surely man is desperately trying to make himself god.

Many sections of the science fraternity says its unethical.

Genome mapping hai kia cheez????? :drag:

Poorae DNA ka sequence. DNA consists of 4 nucleotides (Adenine, Thymine, Guanine and Cytosine) abbreviated as A, T, G, C. The arrangement of these 'nucleotides' - billions of them, 6 billion to be somewhat precise or 3 billion pairs - in a particular sequence gives us our "human and individual" characteristics. The sequence in which billions of copies of these 4 are arranged differs between different species.

Sequencing refers to understanding and mapping the exact sequence in which billions of molecules of A, T, G, C are arranged in one's DNA.

Commercially, certain companies can now do the sequencing of entire genome within hours if not days!

Wrong. Its not crystal ball gazing. Its an exact science. If you know the sequence of your genomic DNA or chromosomes, you can pinpoint the defects in that and you will know which diseases/disorders you are likely to develop.

Genes CANNOT be modified and repaired, by humans externally (although there is a very complex machinery within a cell which tries to repair any damage to the DNA molecule - and if it fails, you get certain kinds of cancers), to make 'super humans' - as of yet.
Many sections of the science fraternity says its unethical.
No one says sequencing is unethical. Only religious nutjobs and supporters of ID say that.

Although considered the proverbial silver bullet, gene therapy is very much still in its infancy. People are trying and a whole lot of work remains to be done before anyone can claim to repair genes by giving a drug/medication/treatment. Just FYI, a recent clinical study for gene therapy resulted in certain patients getting cancer!

If you understand anything about genomics, there is not only DNA but a whole plethora of proteins which control DNA structure, along with many complex signaling pathways. There are many skeptics of gene therapy in scientific field than supporters.

Apart from that, your other claim of creating super humans is simply not possible - not for a very long time!

“Our nation is a mix of a lot of races,” said Prof. Dr M Iqbal Choudhary, who heads the project. “Pakistanis are like a “melting pot” ie a mix of Mughals, Turks, Pashtuns, Afghans, Arabs, etcetera.”

etcetera----Indian

Totally cracked me up!

We totally forget there's a puppy with big, imploring eyes in the corner yelping "me too", "me too". In the Pakistani weltanschauung: "India, an afterthought in the grander scheme of things".

Why are some people trolling? get a life.

Its good news, we should focus more in this field.

Pakistani scientists succeed in mapping genome

Tuesday, June 28, 2011

Pakistani scientists have mapped genome of the first Pakistani, while with this historical achievement, Pakistan joins the ranks of the few countries - the US, UK, China, Japan and India - which have successfully sequenced the human genome.

Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine & Drug Research (PCMD), University of Karachi (KU) and Beijing Genomics Institute, China, have jointly mapped genome of the first Pakistani, living in Karachi.

Pakistan has become the first country in the Muslim World as well that has mapped genome of a first Muslim man.

This historical announcement was made by Prof Dr M. Iqbal Choudhary, Director International Centre for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), KU, while talking to a group of scientists at ICCBS. He said that the first Pakistani genome had been mapped using a newly developed technology ten years after the first human genome was discovered. The PCMD, working under the umbrella ICCBS, had reported mapping of the entire genome of a Pakistani male in just 10 months.

The individual who has been genetically mapped is a resident of Karachi, he added.

“According to the researchers, the newly-sequenced Pakistani genome has uncovered a multitude of ‘Pakistan’-specific sites which can now be used in design of large-scale studies that are better suited for the Pakistani population. The research team was comprised of Dr Kamran Azim, Assistant Professor in the Dr Panjwani Centre for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research and Dr Yong Zhang, head of the genomics department at the Beijing Genomics Institute, Shenzhen, China; among world leading genomics institutions,” he said.

Acknowledging the fact that the complete Pakistani genome has been sequenced for the first time Dr Azim said, “The new thing in the study is the technique which can trace back a mutation to the specific parent. We are still studying the actual genome data itself and how the genetic differences we identified may predispose this particular individual to certain diseases”.
