Islamabad - A scientist at Institute of Biomedical and Genetic Engineering (IBGE), in collaboration with researchers of Europe and Singapore, has discovered a new disease in Pakistan that leads to the lifetime paralysis of the patient. The cause of the disease is interfamily marriage .

The disease coined as ‘siddiqi syndrome’ causes deafness in the patient at the age of six months and leads to a complete paralysis of the body by the age of eleven. This ‘deafness-dsytonia’ includes repetitive muscle contractions their twisting and other abnormal movements.

Dr. Saima Siddiqi of IBGE researched for eight years on a family in Pakistan in which this rare disease was found. Among the nine children of the family, five suffer from this disease . The children named Shabana, Nosheen, Adnan, Rehman and Abdullah, are of different ages. She found the family through Edhi center.

“Initially, the disorder was ignorantly reported as caused by ‘supernatural powers’ or ‘black magic’, but research unveiled that the disease was borne due to interfamily marriage ,” said Dr. Saima.

Interfamily marriages have given a unique texture to genetic landscape of Pakistan due to which diseases considered rare around the globe are found in Pakistan. A unique event at DNA level commonly known as a mutation may result in any rare diseases.

During research, patients were examined in National Hospital Singapore (NHS) to determine the clear idea of phenotype. Modern research techniques including Whole Genome SNP analysis and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) helped researchers to identify a lethal change in the genetic code in a gene named as FITM2.

The researchers observed that the change in genetic code stopped the function of a gene that was involved in fat metabolism and energy production.

Further, experiments of fruit flies and mouse modeling produced similar results on patients thus confirming the involvement of FITM2 gene in development of the disease in patients.

Dr. Siddiqi, who is currently researching on 200 other families, said that the ratio of this disease in Pakistan would be high because of the social structure of the society.

She said that a few healthy generations in a family do not guarantee the non-transferring of the syndrome to the upcoming generation.

Dr. Siddiqi said that the expectancy rate of the disease is high in less educated and poor families.

“Lack of awareness is one of the major reasons for transferring of this disease to the next generation,” she said.

According to her, such families must be educated and encouraged for arranging the marriages of at-least one generation out of the family to reduce the chances of disease .

She added that the life expectancy and recovery from the syndrome could not yet be determined, but could be avoided by conducting premarital blood screening of the individuals before marriage .

She said that the detection of this disease reflects that the genetic evaluation process has been halted in the families, and to erase such deficiencies maximum marriages must be carried out of the family.

However, she added, the lack of facilities for the pre-marital blood screening and research on rare diseases is also an obstacle to counter the flourishing of such syndrome.

“Public hospitals do not provide the facility of premarital blood screening and the government must do something about it,” she said.

Dr. Siddiqi lamented that the government prefers to research on common diseases as compare to the rare ones.

Director IBGE, Dr. Muhammad Ismail said that there is a need of genetic counseling in the public sector hospitals to edcuate large numbers of people on such diseases.

“Cousin Marriages also need to be discouraged as it leads to the pool of defective generations,” he added.

Dr Siddiqi added, “Now this family knows that they have genetic disease running in their family and that they need carrier screening for couples. Although this diagnosis has deprived them of the hope that they can be treated immediately, it’s the start of new hope for them that one day they will have a definite treatment.”

Cousin marriages are disgusting and should be outlawed or at the very least discouraged to the point where it is shameful to consider it. I know there would be many Pakistanis here on PDF that may have done this and they would be offended by this but it is the truth. Modern Medicine studies have repeatedly given proof that this practice leads to disease and defects. Please don't enforce cousin marriage on your offspring. Be responsible and use your brain. This is about human decency and let you children have a minimalistic chance of problems for the rest of their life with their partner.

Just get Married to people outside of family, produce better and new genes. Your Dad’s brother or Mum’s sister won’t die.

So what happens when people from this family start marrying outsiders?

This crazy gene enters the general population, and spreads!

Better stick to themselves.

Just get Married to people outside of family, produce better and new genes.

Marrying outside of family does not create better genes.. it just means the bad recessive gene may not be expressed in some individuals inheriting it but carried to future generations and there's a chance it may be expressed further down the line.

Is it better for this family? Yes. Good for society at large? Absolutely not.

Everyone on this forum who is pro cousin marriage needs to watch this documentary at the very least if they think the rest is "sazish" against muslims

People who marry their own cousins are selfish and do not care about the health of their future generations, such people should be euthanized.

It is safer though. Like sorry but it’s just so weird getting Married to a cousin and waking up to one. EW!

Euthanization occurs naturally when bad genes accumulate. In fact, you should want them to continue marrying cousins if the family is known to carry bad genes.

with intra vitro fertilization i think they will still be able to harbor kids, if you ask me, the problem with inbreeding is it decreases the overall IQ which leads to people behaving like uncivilized apes who're not willing to accept other people's views and opinions and they spread this shit worldview onto others as well.

My uncle(he isn't inbred btw) owns a provisional store so during iftari, he has a habit of inviting nearby molvi's who teach at madrassas(and many other people like his friends etc), among them were 2 educated muslims, anyways during the conversation, someone brings up earthquakes and how all the young kids today are sinning etc and this causes earthquakes and Hong Hong kids need to be good, go to mosque more(to get beaten up and traumatized) to recite(without knowing the meaning), the 2 educated guys started arguing how its literally impossible for an earthquake to happen in Hong Kong as earthquakes usually happen around the boundaries of crustal plates, anyway this turned into a big argument, they're like if god wants, he can make it happen now and they're like yes if god wants but we have to logic also and then my uncle just gets mad and tells them to stfu really freaking loudly and they just end up keeping quiet, ate their food and left.

This isn't just the case with my uncle but the case with lots of muslims worldwide, on one hand we hate america so much and then when they place a ban on us from entering their country, we start crying about rights.
We talk about world issues only when it concerns muslims(burma issue) etc

there are many more but i don't feel like talking about these things, kinda pointless.

Why engage in cousin marriage (legal incest) at all??

because majority of them are virgins who can't get laid so they take the easy way out.
fam for real. it also fucks up your game. i see lots of lads from conservative cultures here who got no game and cant get a bird. unfortunately i was the same tho.

The article is politically charged bullshit.

What has been discovered is a genetic disease. When a human is created thier genes are produced by pairing the DNA of both parents. This process is completely random.

Gene pairs are made of dominant (R) and recessive genes (r). When they pair you can get RR or rr or Rr. Some traits are only available if the pairing is rr. These traits are called resessive traits and could be positive or negative.

If you mate with someone you are related to the difference in your genes is reduced and increases the likeliness of recessive traits being paired, which I assume cause this condition.

Unfortunately because the article is written by a Pakistani its missing all scientific facts and instead pushing its agenda.

Reducing your gene pool is not a good idea generally because many of the known disorders come from resessive gene pairings which are more likely to occur if you have similar genes, but it's only a small statistical probability, not a certainy as presented in the OP.
