Pakistani Primary Schools Should Teach In Mother Tongues - PTI's Education Policy Short Sighted

We need to know what is our speciality as a nation. For example, Japanese have made technology their speciality, they are producing gadgets and are less bothered about language.

Pakistan is a 'NEWS' state and this is our speciality. I have described earlier that how Pakistan connects east, west, north and south. We are formally entering into 'connect' phase and here as many languages as possible would be beneficial. But if not that much languages then one national language i.e. Urdu and one international language, that would be English should be taught in schools. And you put these two languages on traffic sign boards as well.

Mother tongue has effect on child's psychology and he may feel home at school, but in community mix marriages you can't have separate teaching facility for each student. You'll have to have target based promotion of regional language. This task should be given to local bodies to select a regional language to be taught in schools.

This way you are raising a child with three basic languages. You can teach science in English, social studies in Urdu and Islamic studies in regional language.

I 100% agree. We need to increase the deep understanding of subjects, not pass exams.

At primary level
  • All teaching done in mother tongue+Urdu (we have a multi-ethnic society)
  • English and Urdu taught as languages
At secondary/tertiary level
  • All teaching done in Urdu, mother tongue only used to re-enforce understanding.
  • English and Urdu taught as languages
At university level
  • Teaching delivered equally in Urdu and English

Dude, Urdu is not native to Pakistan, It was imposed by British to unify British Raj. Our education system haven't recovered the loss it suffered from British policies. For starter, Punjab's literacy rate even today is less than of 1849.
Indeed, Urdu was spread widely by British, otherwise it was just a provincial language closer to Persian /Arabic.
Purpose of British was to isolate Muslims of Hindustan from larger Islamic world and especially neighbor Iran /Afghanistan etc.
I have seen engineering books in Farsi and i trust there will other sciences as well in farsi.
However, the amount of knowledge available in English is world in its own and i have seen Iranians struggling in English.
Abu Suleman Smith should first try to teach correct Urdu as a language, and than think of changing Pakistan's higher education to Urdu.

Urdu needs to be reclaimed from the influence of bollywood as well. Old urdu, persianized and arabized needs to be taught and used more (like the one in oath taking ceremony).

Read an interesting news in Dawn newspaer about Japan's national curriculum will require children to learn English from the age of 10 in two years time.
