Pakistani president urges 'holistic' approach to fighting terrorism

"I seriously doubt the Americans would have threatened us in this way"

I can only report what the General said:

Musharraf Claims U.S. Threat Video - CBSNews.com.

I have no reason to dis-believe that statement. Did he (or anyone else) subsequently say that this statement was incorrect?

But my question is on Zardari - most people on this tend have dismissed Zardari as a good President. I am just asking whether there is any reason to believe that Sharif would be more effective/capable as President.....

^^ None of these people have been sincere in the past. They have all done their bit in destroying their credibility. People frankly don't care any more I guess.

The general offered the comment only as second-hand information relayed to him by another who actually received the call by Armitage.

So the comments weren't directed at Musharraf but another.

Armitage doesn't deny this conversation but certainly denies the comments-

Armitage Denies Comments To Pakistan-NPR

Now Musharraf is believable in persona but I'll believe the person responsible for actually uttering the comments. Only Armitage and your ISI chief from 2001 knows the truth there.

Helps to sell copies for the ol' memoir, In the Line of Fire, though. Published, btw, while Musharraf was STILL president.

Thanks. That makes much more sense.

Zardari seems to be doing a pretty good job though, given the circumstances.

No, Sharif is not more able than Zardari but it is difficult to say if he would be more effective or less in comparison to Zardari.
If you use any other person as a scale they both are down to zero.

That is obviously up for debate (the whole ISI/Interior Ministry debacle, the 'technical incursion' speech, the UN probe, the lingering judiciary dispute, now the Ajmal Kasab affair and many other things probably not apparent to us). But one thing I know is that things can always be better and they can always get worse.
