A prominent Pakistani politician has been receiving British state benefits to which he was not entitled while living in a palatial home in Karachi.
As the governor of Sindh province in Pakistan, Dr Ishrat-Ul-Ebad Khan lives in a mansion in the state capital while being waited on by servants and chauffeured in Mercedes limousines.

Yet, while enjoying the perks of his position, Dr Khan was for 10 months the recipient of money from the benefits system, including income support worth about £1,000 a month.
Taxpayers also funded the £244-a-week rent on a house in north-west London, that Dr Khan keeps as a base for his family in Britain. His wife, Shaheena, also received benefits because she had been diagnosed with a "stress disorder". Extra money was added to allow for Dr Khan, who did not have a job, as her full-time carer.

Last night Andrew Dismore, the Labour MP whose Hendon constituency includes the house rented by the Khans, called on ministers to launch an immediate inquiry. Mr Dismore, a former member of the Commons Work and Pensions select committee, said: "I would be very surprised if the rules allowed this."
Danny Alexander, Liberal Democrat spokesman on work and pensions, said: "A system that allows mistakes such as this to occur is clearly not working." When confronted by The Sunday Telegraph, Dr Khan, who has four children, admitted receiving benefits to which he was not entitled since taking up his position as governor three years ago but insisted that he had paid back the money. There has been no further claim since October 2003.
Dr Khan, who trained at Sindh Medical College in Karachi, came to Britain in 1992 as an asylum seeker. Following the acceptance of his asylum claim in 1999, Dr Khan was entitled to a range of British benefits. He and his family have been living in a pebble-dashed semi-detached corner house in Edgware, a north London suburb since 1997. In May 1999, they began claiming income support, which also entitled him to other payments, such as housing benefit.
Dr Khan said that he had repaid a matter of "a few hundred pounds" but he was keen to make sure any money that might still be outstanding was reimbursed. "If anything has been done, even inadvertently, I would very much like to rectify it. But in our opinion we have not tried to misguide or mislead."

LOLLLLL; the infinite benefits of "Dual Citizenship"!!!!
Get benefitted in both places. And when the "going gets rough, then hot-foot it to the other country of citizenship". Ask Hussain Haqqani, for instance. ;)
Every Pakistani Citizen should try this.-----------"Idhar bhi khao aur udhar bhi khao".

This is very old news from 2005 as you rightly reported...

I still remember he didn't even want to leave UK and was given assurances that he will not arrested when entering Pakistan. He couldn't believe he was going to be the Governor as soon as he was landed in Pakistan as per the reports coming those days. If I am not wrong there were proven charges against him in Pakistan and he was declared Ishtihari?

Musharraf had to compromise with MQM so he became a Governor out of nowhere.

U hear ? From were ?

indians are, they have advantage of over population...

Muslim Polygamists Exploiting British Welfare System :: Gatestone Institute

Tens of thousands of Muslim immigrants in Britain are practicing bigamy or polygamy in order to collect bigger social welfare payments from the British state, according to experts interviewed in a British newspaper exposé on the subject.

The September 24 report shows that the phenomenon of bigamy and polygamy -- which is permitted by Islamic Sharia law -- is far more widespread in Britain than previously believed, even though it is a crime there, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

The rapid growth in multiple marriages is being fuelled by multicultural policies that grant special rights to Muslim immigrants who demand that Sharia law be reflected in British law and the social welfare benefits system.

The exposé quotes two senior social welfare experts based in Lancashire (one of the most "multicultural" areas in Britain) who estimate that there are now at least 20,000 bigamous or polygamous Muslim unions in England and Wales. This would imply that around 300,000 people are living in polygamous families in Britain if the average size of such a "family" is 15 people.

The multiple marriages are encouraged by recent changes to the British welfare system which allows Muslim immigrants to have a second, third or fourth wife (or in some cases five or more) treated as a single mother who can get a house and an array of other state payments for herself and her children.

The exposé shows how Muslim men can take a new spouse from anywhere in the world, father any number of children with her, and have British taxpayers assume responsibility for this family's upkeep and care.

Although all marriages that take place in the United Kingdom must be monogamous, Muslim immigrants can employ countless evasions to practice polygamy without running afoul of British matrimony laws.

Muslim men, for example, can marry their extra "wives" in an Islamic Nikah ceremony, either in their own homes or in a mosque. Because these marriages are not officially recognized, they do not appear in government statistics, nor do they have any status under the law. As a result, the "single mothers" involved in these marriages are entitled to receive welfare benefits from the British state.

Another technique is for a Muslim couple to marry legally under British law but then divorce, leaving them then to have a Nikah ceremony and continue living together. The woman will then be entitled to welfare payments as a single mother and the man can then bring another woman from abroad and legally marry her in Britain.

Muslim men also cheat the system by bringing brides from abroad as nannies for their children, or as nurses for a sick relative. After the bride's one year visitors' visa expires, she then disappears into a tight-knit local Muslim community and is entitled to receive welfare handouts.

Apart from the "nanny ruse," new female partners enter the country using tourist visas, student visas or work permits. They simply overstay the visas, which are normally for six months, and remain in Britain, often hiding away in their husband's home.

The United Kingdom also recognizes polygamous marriages where both parties were resident in a country in which the practice is legal before they moved to Britain. Following a 2008 change that the former Labour government made to British law, a Muslim man with four spouses is entitled to receive £10,000 ($15,000) a year in income support alone. He could also be entitled to more generous housing and council tax benefits, to reflect the fact that his household needs a bigger property.

The end result is that the more babies produced by Muslim polygamists, the more state welfare money pours in for them and their wives. By having a string of wives living in separate homes, thousands of Muslim immigrants are squeezing tens of millions of British pounds from the state by claiming benefits intended for single mothers and their children.

Those women are eligible for full housing benefits -- reaching £106,000 ($250,000) a year in some parts of London -- and child benefits paid at £1,000 ($1,500) a year for a first child, and nearly £700 ($1,000) for each subsequent one.

By way of example, the exposé describes a street in a Yorkshire town where all the residents are Pakistani women with children living on social security. There is not one man living in the street.

The report says: "The men find second wives in the UK as well as any Muslim country abroad. The new favourite places to find women are Turkey and Morocco, because the men can drive there by car to meet them and bring them back."

The report also interviews a Muslim woman who was deserted by her husband of 20 years when he went on holiday to Bangladesh and returned to say he was about to marry a girl of 19 in a Nikah ceremony, and wanted to bring her to Britain as his second wife.

"All over the place, in London's East End, in Yorkshire towns, down the road, across the street, I see Muslim men taking second or third wives. I cannot count the number of times I have been approached to be a second wife myself by Bangladeshi men who know I am now on my own," she said.

A separate investigative report also describes how Muslim women suffer as a result of polygamy. It quotes a government social worker who is active in Muslim neighbourhoods as saying: "The first wives get depressed because they are so ashamed of their husband taking a second or third wife. Many wives have been here for years, but have never been allowed to learn English or even go out of the house alone. They have no one to turn to for help."

The controversy over multiple marriages in Britain made the headlines September 16 with the publication of a hard-hitting essay titled, "Polygamy, Welfare Benefits and an Insidious Silence." It was written by Baroness Shreela Flather, Mayor of Windsor and Maidenhead, who was herself born in Lahore (now part of Pakistan) and was the first Asian woman member of the British House of Lords.

As Lady Flather explained, "Britain's social security system incentivises idleness and fecklessness. And one of the most worrying aspects of this -- and which is something that has been a taboo subject for far too long, because of sensitivities about the issue of race -- is the way the system is exploited by some migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh."

It's true many of the Pakistani origin and other Asian communities are in my view leeches, many of them are on UK benefits and welfare, receiving hundreds of pounds each month. Many of them are lazy and feel comfortably living off the welfare. UK doesn't provide food stamps but cash money monthly and these people use it for other means whatever they wish for. Many of them will work a part time or full time job and apply for benefits in their wife's name, or will apply for medical benefits.

I'm surprise why true native British people tolerate these parasites, though the conservative government is trying to change the situation making it harder for people to stay on benefits for x time afaik.

In fact there are Asian couples who will deliberately have their kids born in UK only to take them back to their Asian country and raise their children their to instill traditional values and then bring their child back to UK to complete education, etc.

.
I wonder why children of Indian heritage are at the top of educational attainment rankings in the UK and US while those of Pakistani and Bangladeshi heritage are at the very bottom. Is it due to their family attitude towards short term maximisation rather than slog for a long term benefit.

The Pakistani politician must be taking inspiration from his nations founding fathers. Jinnah and other leaders of the Muslim league were paid by the British Raj via the various Muslim princely states like Nizam of Hyderabad. Today's Pakistani politicians are carrying forward the same glorious tradition of their country's founders.

Agree; I wonder if it is common knowledge that NOT A SINGLE major Muslim League leader spent even half a day in jail while Congress leaders spent years and year behind bars. Pakistan fell into their lap, so as to speak. And now political leaders have to be imported from abroad. For example, the new president to be.

Many of them have homes their, notice how many of them go to exhile in UK. Nawaz Sharif, Imran Khan, Zardari, Musharaff all own homes in UK and escape there. You'd be surprise how much of the elite and artistocrats of south Asia have made UK their true homes. From politicians, bankers, military personnel, movie stars, singers many of them have their real home in UK.

I suppose this phenomenon is more prevalent in Pakistan and Pakistan only makes up less than 1/10th of South Asia.
This phenomenon has origins in the founding of Pakistan and hence very ingrained in the psyche of that nation.

Indian elites too have bought houses in London. According to the Mayor of London, 25% of the real estate purchases in Mayfair are by Indians. There is an article in this weeks Economist about this phenomenon - Indian elites spending two / three months of their summers in London. The difference between our two countries lies in the fact that a large number of our elites are anonymous businessmen; not politicians.

.
The poluticians should be banned from transfering money to other countries and duel citizenship………:coffee:
I suppose duel citizenship is now not allowed here in Pakistan……

I hear Bangladeshi and Pakistanis are biggest abuser of UK dole system.

No offense but entire South Asian lot falls in that category. I knew a group of indians here in my university who literally robbed a M&S store by stealing 20 laptops just before they left UK and my pakistani friend got kicked out of his job just because what those indians did.

Must have made it to the news then?

And anyways am not talking about international students, British Bangladeshi and Pakistanis are the biggest dole bludgers and abusers of the system. They just pretend to be poor, just like Dr Ishrat-Ul-Ebad Khan, so that can claim their dole.
