Pakistani manufactured coronavirus testing kits, ventilators to hit markets soon

Pakistani Students Develop a Kit to Identify COVID Patients in 20 Seconds

GIKI-Corona.jpg

Update: Latest study has shown that there is no authentic way of identifying coronavirus without taking a blood sample as a big percentage of virus carriers do not show any symptoms at all, rendering this method as ineffective.

Two Pakistani students have developed a device that can diagnose coronavirus through AI within 20 seconds.

Mohammad Aleem and Rahul Raj, students at Gulam Ishaq Khan Institute (GIKI), are the masterminds behind this invention.

The students say that the shortage of testing kits and long waiting time after the test motivated them to turn to technology amid growing coronavirus cases across the world.

A timely diagnosis would allow doctors to initiate the isolation and treatment process of a COVID-19 patient instantly, reducing the risk of cross-infection to a great extent.

How the Device Works

The AI-powered device developed by GIKI students uses computed tomography (CT) scan of lungs to detect COVID-19.

The device can perform analysis on CT scans and tell whether a patient has been infected with coronavirus in just 20 seconds with 92% accuracy.

Besides speed and accuracy, the device can also identify the exact location, impact, and severity of the damage inflicted on the lungs due to coronavirus.

Requesting Funds From The Government

The AI-powered device depends on CT scans in order to diagnose the disease. A CT scan costs somewhere between Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 in Pakistan. The cost of a CT scan is the biggest impediment to the mass production of the AI-powered device.

Moreover, the more data the AI-based machine processes, the more accurate it will become with time.

The students have requested the government to provide them adequate resources so they can move towards the mass-production of the device.

He said, “The federal government took major steps for overcoming the shortage of ventilators and testing kits [for screening and detection of coronavirus] three weeks ago. At this time, a corona testing kit is available at the cost of Rs7,000 to 8,000. Moreover, a detection test will not be fruitful until it is properly conducted by the medics.”

“I have suggested the federal government for getting capable of local manufacturing of ventilators. Insha-Allah, the ventilators manufactured this week will be handed over to DRAP [Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan],” the minister claimed.

The minister said that Prime Minister Imran Khan directed all authorities to rapid act upon the developments regarding the coronavirus pandemic across the country. He added that testing kits and ventilators will soon reach to the markets that were previously manufactured only by China and other countries.

Chaudhry further said that the steps related to acquiring testing kits and ventilators were taken prior to the latest situation.

While commenting over the provision of relief to the nationals, Fawad Chaudhry said he has prepared a list of deserving families present in his constituency in order to help them.

Earlier, Fawad Chaudhry had said in a Twitter message that two initiatives of the Ministry of Science and Technology were in final stages of approval including corona testing kits, ventilators that will immensely bring down the costs of war against COVID-19 pandemic.

Pakistan within three weeks to start manufacturing its own ventilators : Fawad Chaudry

ISLAMABAD, Apr 6 (APP):Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry Monday announced that Pakistan within three weeks would start manufacturing of its own Ventilators to increase testing capacity for Coronavirus.

Talking to private news channel, Fawad hoped that today after getting the approval of Drugs Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), Pakistan will start locally its own testing kits and ventilators manufacturing to save the lives of many critically ill coronavirus patients.

He said we will successfully made the ventilators in country, which is the much needed medical equipment for the hospitals amid the coronavirus epidemic.

Steps have already been taken to manufacture the test kits and ventilators locally, he added.

Fawad Chaudhry added that earlier only test kits were made by China and other countries.

High costs, manufacturing countries’ inability to fulfill export demands due to their own local demands, among other reasons, have made import of the equipment even more difficult even in America so after the manufacturing of local Ventilators we will get cheap rate testing facilities in our own country, he added.

To improve the testing capacity, NDMA, federal government and provisional governments are working in close collaboration to increase the existing number of coronavirus testing labs and its capacity.

He said the Coronavirus cases surged in U.S. and Europe as compared to South Asia countries where corona patients are less affected.

Fawad said Pakistan will also be the part of world research on Corona virus where we will soon to launch a research paper as well.

He said, the federal government took major steps for overcoming the shortage of ventilators and testing kits for screening and detection of coronavirus.

The indigenous ventilators will be far cheaper than those being imported from abroad, the minister added.

He said that Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) was given this task to overcome shortage of ventilators in the prevailing health crisis due to increasing number of Coronavirus patients in the country.

Replying a Query about increasing stressed among Public related to coronavirus, he urged people to strictly follow social distancing and self-quarantine as the country is facing major threats due to the coronavirus.

He suggested that people to promote the habit of reading books at home during the corona lock downs.

He urged the media to focus on educating people, as it is the collective responsibility of all citizens.

The government is also working on an economic package to support the people, industry and the country’s economy from the negative effects of the pandemic, he added.

KARACHI: The novel coronavirus continues to wreak havoc across the world with many countries including developed nations facing acute shortage of medical equipment while COVID-19 patients are dying due to the lack of ventilators.

During these difficult times, a private engineering firm in Pakistan has found an out-of-the-box solution, which would allow multiple patients to use just one ventilator simultaneously.

Alpha Rubber and Plastic Works, a Lahore-based company which manufactures auto parts, has developed a splitter which connects to the ventilator hoses and supplies oxygen to two to four patients at once and may be used multiple times.

Osama Usman, head of the private firm, told The Express Tribune that ‘Plan 9’ of Punjab IT Board of (PITB) had approached them to manufacture the connector using the 3D printer prototype.

He said the part was initially being manufactured by the PITB using the 3D printer technology which is a time-taking and costly procedure.

Pakistani volunteers 3D-print ventilators, join war against COVID-19

Osama said despite facing a lot of hurdles due to the prevailing lockdown in the country, his firm manufactured it on an emergency basis only in 72 hours through painstaking efforts.

Now we are manufacturing 1,000 ventilator connectors daily which is being supplied to various government and private hospitals in Punjab,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hammad Khalique, who is head of business development at Plan 9, told The Express Tribune that health experts and professionals have expressed concerns over the safety and effectiveness of sharing ventilators.

He said the equipment should only be used in an emergency situation because the requirement of oxygen by a patient depends on his age and medical condition.

keeping in mind worst-case scenario, we authorised its development,” he said, adding that if need be this technique could be used given the fact that the number of ventilators in the country is very low.

Interestingly, the development of connector has made Pakistan only the second country to have this technology after the United States.

Osama said he is providing splitters to the hospitals free of charge and would supply this to the entire country if he was approached.

“I can supply connectors to the entire country and world free of charge,” he added.

He also requested the Punjab government to ban its commercial trade and ensure that it is only used for welfare purposes.

The novel coronavirus – which emerged in the central China city of Wuhan in December 2019 and has since been declared a pandemic – has literally upended the world.

The COVID-19 respiratory illness caused by the mysterious contagion has so far infected over one million people, with over 60,000 dead, in all continents of the world barring Antarctica.

Pakistan reported its first COVID-19 positive case on February 26, 2020 and has infected over 2,750 people in the country with 40 deaths and at least 130 recoveries.

In Pakistan: 18 coronavirus patients cured using Hydroxychloroquine and Azithromycin’

HCQ.jpg

LAHORE: Mayo Hospital CEO and Corona Advisory Group Co-Chairperson Professor Dr Asad Aslam on Thursday said that 18 COVID-19 patients have been successfully treated with anti-malaria drug Hydroxychloroquine and antibiotic Azithromycin during the past five days in Lahore city.

Speaking to Pakistan Today in Lahore, he said that eight patients at Mayo Hospital, four at Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute (PKLI) and five at other hospitals of the province were administered the drugs in the past five days.

“The patients were administered two tablets Hydroxychloroquine in the morning and two in the evening on the first day whereas on the remaining four days, they were given one tablet in the morning and one in the evening. Simultaneously, they were given one tablet of Azithromycin in the morning and one in the evening for five days,” he said.

Dr Aslam urged the people to avoid self-medication and said that these medicines should only be used upon a doctor’s prescription because they could have serious side effects. “Doctors at private clinics may also prescribe these medicines if any coronavirus patient approaches them” he added.

Govt again bans export of anti-malaria medicine manufactured in Pakistan

Commerce ministry issues new notification days after withdrawing the ban. — AFP/File
ISLAMABAD: Four days after withdrawing a ban on the export of all anti-malaria drugs, the ministry of commerce has again imposed the ban on the medicines to stockpile them in case of their possible use to treat Covid-19 patients.

The ban that has been imposed with immediate effect will remain in place until further decision of the National Coordination Committee (NCC) on Covid-19, according to SRO297 of 2020 issued here by commerce ministry on Friday.

The demand for export of anti-malaria drugs especially hydroxychloroquine gained importance after US President Donald Trump claimed that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved the use of “very powerful” drug Chloroquine to treat Covid-19.

For almost a week, there was confusion between the commerce division and the national health ministry about who was authorised to move a summary for allowing the export of or impose a ban on the anti-malaria medicines.

Commerce ministry issues new notification days after withdrawing the ban

The commerce division had earlier termed a letter of Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (Drap) seeking ban on exports of masks inappropriate.

According to an official source, the commerce division in the wake of the NCC meeting issued an order on April 3 banning the export of all anti-malaria drugs with immediate effect. “We have issued the order to implement the decision quickly,” the official said, adding it was decided that post-facto approval would be sought from the cabinet.

However, that order did not go down well with the national health ministry.

To resolve the issue, it was agreed that national health ministry would submit a summary to the federal cabinet for getting approval of imposing ban on export of all anti-malaria drugs.

The cabinet in its meeting on April 6 approved the ban, the source said. Interestingly, the commerce ministry on April 6 issued another order to withdraw its April 3 order regarding the imposition of ban on the export of all anti-malarial drugs.

To implement the cabinet meeting decision, the commerce ministry issued a new notification for imposing the ban on the medicine export, which was dated April 9. However, the notification was released to the media on Friday.

There are approximately 20 companies, which are manufacturing anti-malaria drugs.

At the same time to restrict use of anti-malaria drugs in domestic market, Drap has already asked medical stores to sell the drugs on doctors’ prescriptions only.

As per Drap record, there are around 25 million tablets and around 9,000 kilograms of raw material available in the market to produce drugs. The authority believes that the country has sufficient stock to meet any emergency.

According to an official statement of Drap, the Central Licensing Board of Drap has approved local manufacturing of Chloroquine Phosphate-Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API). Now Chloroquine API can be manufactured indigenously to meet the requirement of those pharmaceutical companies that prepare Chloroquine phosphate tablets, injections and syrups, it adds.

Tax exemption

Meanwhile, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) exempted funds meant for Prime Minister’s Covid-19 Pandemic Relief Fund-2020.

According to an income tax notification SRO300 of 2020 issued on Friday, all such funds will be exempted from income tax at any stage. No tax will be charged on transfer of such funds, cash withdrawal from banks, and banking transactions other than cash.

Pakistani scientists close to developing Covid-19 quick testing kits

Reuters/Internews/Islamabad

Coronavirus kit

As the pandemic spreads and case statistics increase by leaps and bounds, Pakistani scientists are on the brink of developing locally produced diagnostic kits for the novel coronavirus. The kits, to be prepared by scientists at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), with the collaboration of Chinese researchers, will be the first of its kind to be produced in the country, claim researchers behind the project. The latest development in the project surfaced when scientists achieved ‘positive control’ of the virus in the first phase of experimentation. Since then, preliminary experimentation on the synthetic plasmid gene of the coronavirus imported from China has been completed while orders have been placed for the import of chemicals required for the second stage of the process.

International Center for Chemical and Biology Sciences (ICCBS) Director Prof Dr Iqbal Chaudhry, confirmed the development of the diagnostic kits at the National Institute of Virology, a sub-institution under ICCBS of the University of Karachi. “Covid-19 is a national threat and we, with the intention of curbing and controlling the disease in the country have begun preparing to produce the kits domestically in Pakistan,” he added.

According to Dr Mohamed Ammar Athar, a Pakistani scientist working on producing the diagnostic kits, they have set two targets for the project. The first, fundamental target is to prepare the early diagnostic kits capable of diagnosing the lowest limits of the virus, while the second target is to diagnose multiple people with a single low-cost kit. “The required six chemicals are expected to arrive from Canada by next week and it will take us about 18 months from then to prepare the diagnostic kits,” he claimed. As per Pakistani researchers, the Chinese imported synthetic plasmid gene of the coronavirus has been matched with a designed primer and has proven successful in detecting the virus. “We have obtained a positive control of the virus and changed the primer from a powder form to liquid which is lyophilised to save the biological content,” the researchers informed.

So far, imported coronavirus kits have not been entirely successful in detecting the virus despite clear symptoms since the kits are not equipped for early detection or low limits of the virus. “However, our primary target for the domestically produced kits is to focus on early detection,” said Dr Ammar Athar.

“Scientifically speaking, the limit of a virus in a human body is called ‘copy’. The kits that have arrived in Pakistan are capable of detecting a viral load 300 copies while we aim to diagnose as low as 50 copies with our own kits. This is a huge target to achieve but if we are able to detect the virus in its early stages before it multiplies, it will make treatment significantly easier,” he added.

As per ICCBS Director Dr Iqbal Chaudhry, certain kits being imported from China and other countries have the capacity to test 20 cases while others can test 48. “However, we are trying to prepare a kit capable of testing over 300 samples and real-time work on PCR technology is being carried out for the preparation of these kits, producing which can cost up to Rs250,000 to 300,000 per kit,” Chaudhry further informed.

Chaudhry also assured of full co-operation to the relevant authorities regarding funding for the project. “The test is likely to cost between Rs300 to Rs500 after the preparation of the diagnostic kits, while the management of a public and private hospital has also been contacted in the regard since samples of a few Covid-19 positive cases are required for the preparation of the kits,” said the ICCBS director.

“Both hospitals have agreed full co-operation but owing to the sensitivity of the matter, the positive test samples required for the preparation of the kit would not be transported but experimented internally at the concerned hospitals,” he concluded.

Fake virus tests in Sindh

Police and healthcare authorities in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province have carried out operations against those violating the ban on public gatherings, imposed amid the coronavirus outbreak, vendors selling items at inflated prices and quack physicians conducting fake coronavirus tests in Sindh.
The Sindh Health Care Commission (SHCC) launched a crackdown on quack doctors who carried out fake coronavirus tests across Sindh.

Following the spike in coronavirus cases, quacks have been administering fake tests and displaying banners in this regard outside their clinics. Upon receiving several complaints, the provincial government launched an operation against them. Speaking in this regard, SHCC Commission Chief Executive Officer Dr Minhaj Qidwai has urged the public not to fall into the trap of fake doctors and only get tested for the virus from hospital designated by the health department.

Meanwhile, police conducted a raid at Lal Qila restaurant late Monday night and arrested four staff members, including the restaurant’s manager, for violating the ban placed on public gatherings to prevent coronavirus spread. According to police, a wedding reception was held at the restaurant where approximately 200 guests were invited.

A case against the arrested has been registered at Bahadurabad police station. Separately, three other persons, including a foreigner, were arrested for hoarding face masks, during an operation in Azizabad. Separately, police conducted a raid at a school in Liaquatabad and arrested the school administrator for not suspending classes as per the Sindh government’s orders. A case has been registered against the administrator.

Police have also claimed to have arrested a shopkeeper for selling surgical masks at inflated rates in Sukkur, on the same day. According to police, the arrested shopkeeper was identified as Ibrahim and shifted to a police station for interrogation. The arrest was made during a crackdown on hoarders of face masks and hand sanitisers as well as those selling these items at higher prices in the city, where over 100 cases of Covid-19 had been reported so far.

I have heard that the testing kit has 99% accuracy and gives result in just one hour.

If true, it will be remarkable in such a short time. Pakistan can test millions in a short period of time and thus effectively containing the virus.
