The government of Pakistan allocated PKR42 billion (US$401.1 million) earlier this week for construction of the 5,400-MW Dasu hydropower project.
The money was allocated under the Public Sector Development Programme for the year 2016-2017, according to Pakistan’s Daily Times. The newspaper indicated capacity of the project would be 4,500 MW.
This facility, on the Indus River in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, will be completed in two stages, with the first having a capacity of 2,160 MW and being completed in five years. The roller-compacted-concrete dam will be 242 meters (794 feet) tall and the underground powerhouse will contain six 36-MW turbine-generator units and be located about 3.5 km downstream.
Pakistan’s Water and Power Development Authority is building the project. WAPDA’s website indicates a 2,160-MW Stage I, meaning Stage II would be 3,340 MW. At its full capacity, Dasu is expected to produce 26,700 GWh of electricity annually.
According to Daily Times, there is a “chronic energy crisis in the country,” but work to resolve the issue has yielded good results, with load shedding reduced from to six to eight hours from 18 to 20 hours in 2013.
“Dasu Hydropower Project is one of the priority projects under the Power Policy 2013 and the Vision 2025 of [the] Government of Pakistan,” WAPDA’s website says.
The Dasu site is 74 km downstream from the proposed Diamer Basha Dam site.
