Pakistani Diaspora Thriving in America

Great article talking about the contributions of Pakistani-Americans in US.

I know we like to identify ourselves through are ethnicity or race, calling ourselves either Indian-American or Pakistani-American. But we need to focus on the most important part-- being American. I know many of us like to bring the problems of the subcontinent with us, arguing over things whose impact is being felt thousands of miles away but very little to our day to day activities.

So I'm very happy that Pakistan-American community is doing well in the United States. I applaud their success.

Some of us came with our parents, and tend to visit when possible. But once we have our kids, assuming it'll be with a Pakistani/Indian spouse, the connection our kids will have will continue to diminish. Sure they'll be Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi-American but the connections will just be weak similar to Irish-Americans in Boston, or German-Americans in Illinois.

So true. Though I'm an immigrant, I came to the United States when I was three. And my connection to India are lesser than my parents. I also have a nephew and niece whose connection are even more diminished. In a generation or two, they will have very little connection.

You're right. I guess I was counting the Caribbean Islands as one country (though they are not).

Most of the Caribbean medical grads are Americans who chose to go to school there to save money. Most are not really "foreign" but "foreign trained".

Ah, thank you for pointing that out. I incorrectly assumed that the chart was listing graduates by nationality.

But yes, many Americans do indeed go to for-profit medical schools in the Caribbean.
