US activists protest against Modi visit

India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the US on his maiden visit since assuming office in May.

It's a moment of triumph for Modi who was denied a US visa in 2005 for his alleged failure as the state chief minister to control the 2002 religious riots in Gujarat.

His supporters have planned to organise an elaborate welcome ceremony that includes an address by the right-wing leader at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Close to 20,000 people are expected to attend the grand reception.

But there are human rights activists who continue to oppose his visit to the US. They say that justice has not been served to the riot victims.

Al Jazeera spoke to some of the activists who have planned to protest against the Indian prime minister's visit.

"The US visa ban had given me a sense of relief, that within India and outside India, people are aware of the happenings and the atrocities that are being inflicted based on religion and under the banner of democracy."

"I am sad and could not believe that the US government would turn its back on us, but then this did not surprise me. I am not in politics, but I am aware of decades of US international policies and dealings, why should we be expecting something special. But I do know that the US understands the entire situation and what happened in Gujarat…"

"People just do not go out to kill in trucks in the thousands all over a state unless it is preplanned and organised. In broad daylight on February 28, 2002, a mob of 10,000 people had surrounded 300 people, burning, looting killing children and women with swords and knives, throwing fire bombs and burning them alive. My father was cut into pieces, tortured for hours before and then his head was paraded around."

"We are protesting outside Madison Square Garden on Friday. It is to protest against the massacre in Gujarat and how the victims still have not received any justice. We are also protesting against the ongoing atrocities and hate mongering [against minorities] that is going on in India... We will not allow him to destroy India’s secularism and pluralism."

"The first thing he should do is put an end to the propaganda of 'love-jihad' and the re-conversion of Christians and Muslims to Hindus…"

"We want to say to him that abandon the ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [parent body of BJP]. Stop impeding speedy process of justice."

"He should apologise first and foremost. It is completely unacceptable that he did not apologise."

"We are extremely disappointed that the Obama administration wilfully ignored several years of principled US government policy that denied Mr Modi a visa due to his sordid human rights record. Successive State Department reports identified Modi as a rights violator and cited his role in the 2002 genocide of Muslims in Gujarat. We understand that as the head of government his present visit is facilitated by international protocols. We also recognise that the US approach to policy on the human rights front is invariably subordinated to the perceived economic benefits to US corporations. Last year we supported efforts in the US Congress to place human rights at the centre of the US-India strategic dialogue in order to address this crass and unprincipled practice of ignoring human rights in favour of business…"

"Modi's elevation to the seat of prime minister of India does not absolve his culpability in the genocide committed in 2002 in Gujarat."

"We felt a blow when he was elected. We don’t have anything against the BJP when [former Prime Minister Atal Bihari] Vajpayee was there, the philosophy was different…"

"It is for Prime Minister Modi to prove everyone wrong. He has an opportunity now, although he has not demonstrated so far. He should get rid of people such as Amit Shah [a close aide of Modi] and Hindu far-right groups. He should be a Vajpayee. He can still be a Hindu nationalist but be a gentle face of Hindu nationalism not an extremist face."

"He has an opportunity to change himself. He thinks for the good of India and if he frees himself from the influence of hardliners then he can do something good. We haven’t totally lost hope in him."

Kaleem Kawaja is a member of Coalition Against Genocide, a group that had successfully lobbied for Narendra Modi’s visa ban in 2005

Chinese mouth piece is certainly a great source of reliable news. yes, For brain washed Pakistanis and chinese certainly it is.

First of all... its all about lobbying... nothing else more... Think Tanks and Analysis across the world covering for this entire UN and all PM's movement in USA hardly cover Modi trip. Modi is nothing in terms of global perspective.

PS: Only Indian inviting them in Silicon not any CEO it self invite Modi. Indians lobbying is active who basically organized these events not any International community nor even Business or CEO's of the giants call him.

All these Indians fabricated news since Modi came into power. Technically till today since Obama visit hardly any thing move further on ground or in real for India. Except photo shots etc...

My questions to Indians. Can anyone tell us how Facebook and all these giants will invest billions of Dollars in India where as they simultaneously investing in China, Arab and Europe ?

Do you have nay idea about how much these companies are earning ? 1000 Billions US dollars ? LOL use brain for analysis not these pictures. On ground not a single investment or anything happened since modi came into power. LOL @ these Indians hypes...

I've no issue with Indians. I've really good Indian friends (living outside India and in India). They're far more close to reality. Let me tell you difference between Indians living in India and living outside India.

From past few days Indians who are living in India (Majority) sharing these pictures with supa dupa headings title (hype) but hardly see any sharing pictures of Modi US visit from those Indians who are living outside India (Majority). People knew the reality of all these photo shots. In real except what we call them oh yaa "MOUz or yes yes baby we will on the way".

@ Last.. its lobbying nothing else more... in which Indians are really GOOD!

no one invites anyone, Modi people reach to different organizations for meetings because they want to show it to Indian how popular Modi is. I dont think even Nepal's King asks for an address to Silicon Valley they will refuse it.

Well two very straight pointers

1. The negative vibe in Pakistan makes many to see the just the negative aspect of everything. Where as we see at the positive sides. No harm in walking extra feet if there is even a small light at end to the tunnel. You only win if you take steps with positivity in mind. A negative mind is devils mind, it will keep you idle and then all those brain fart conspiracy theories will emerge out of it.

2. Building an investment culture is not a one day job it takes decades for a country to get the right set of investments moving. China didnt got its investments in all the sectors in first year itself. What Modi is doing is touching the bases which will connect the dots to make pathway to investments and growths.

No matter whether google or facebook makes investment today or tomorrow or never, what this has made is the youth to look up and feel proud, you only need to provide the positive engery in the youth, rest they are very very energetic to make the moves and take actions.

PS: Trust me my perception about the investment is completely different from many Pakistanis. YE tu bohat acha hey dunya Invest karay India may takay in case of conflict or standoff on the border Pakistan ko ziada advtange hey.... I remmeber when standoff @ 2002, how the world pressurize India to get off hamare Invest phansi hoi hey yaan clear kardoo kay jang may ja rahay ho takay we will pull over investment and how tu foriegn investment got halted and how India stock exchange fuckedup btw the standdoff of 2002

Probably you went to wrong school of economics. If world is investing in India, its the worst for Pakistan, not only it will make india more stronger, but it will also raise India soft power. In case if there is war, it would be much more easy for India to choke up Pakistan from global support. As all the investing countries would want to safeguard assets would pressurize pakistan to take steps back. In todays world nuclear bombs will not make you will war, its your economic might and connections that will make you will the war. Simple example, China is growing super power, not because it has more nukes, but because it not only has diversified investments across the globe, but also it has large global investors invested in its economy too which has made china to rise to such and economical power. And now it uses that diaspora to connect and pressurize governments globally.

. . .
Does it matter, what the news are saying..what matter most is the result and Modi atleast is making an effort in doing the same. If because of Modi's effort India is back to its growth trajectory, then its great work done...
