ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is an astute politician with the ability to outsmart rivals and he is aiming for the "political and military dominance of India", said a Pakistani daily that noted he was "received like a star" in the US.

An editorial in The Nation on Monday said that everyone loves a good old showdown between politicians - but in the case of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif versus his Indian counterpart Modi, "we have our backs to the wall".

"While Modi is received like a star is attending events and parties, PM Sharif only has the UN platform to make an impact. The odds are stacked against Pakistan," said the daily.

Both Nawaz and Modi are in New York for the Sustainable Development Summit hosted by UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon, where the new and ambitious post-2015 development agenda will be adopted.

The daily said that Modi will not only speak to Silicon Valley's biggest executives during his two-day visit to the US tech hub, but will also take questions from some of Facebook Inc's 1.5 billion users at a Town Hall.

He also attended a dinner with 350 business leaders where Indian-born CEOs of Microsoft Corp, Google Inc and Adobe Systems Inc moderated a panel.

He has also sought to encourage some Indians who have thrived around Silicon Valley to bring their knowledge back home.

"What is Nawaz Sharif doing?, the daily asked.

"Modi has been focused on connecting with the Indian diaspora in the US, while Nawaz Sharif was considering speaking to the US President in Urdu, to give our national ego a boost. It almost sounds like a joke. Increasingly, Pakistan has nothing to offer to the west, including personality and charisma," it added.

The editorial stressed that Pakistan must watch Modi's "gait and gestures".

"Modi is an astute politician, who has the ability to outsmart rivals with an amazing sense of timing. We on the other hand, are stuck with archaic, redundant policies of following the same deadbeat formula of 'successes'," it said.

Calling for a drastic improvement of the Pakistani image in the west, the daily said: "The US is helping India get armed to the hilt and soon we will lose our only advantage- our military strength. And that is Modi's aim - the political and military dominance of India. He has a plan. Do we?"

there may be thousand ills in modi and his party. but one thing has to be admitted, he is the man with a vision. he seems to be totally focused on his mission of progress and betterment of his nation and people.
i dont dislike ns, he is not the worst of three possible pms. but he can do better. lets assume that he gets kashmir issue solved, that will be betterment for the people of iok. how would that help 200 million pakistanis? he has to have broader vision to tie up rest of the world to prosper.

Making brief remarks to the Google employees, most of whom are Indians, Modi announced that “Indian Railways and Google will collaborate to provide wi-fi at 500 railway stations in India.” Earlier, India-born Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the search engine giant will provide high speed internet services at 100 railway stations in India initially and then expand it by 400 more by next year.

During his tour of Google campus, Modi asked that Khagaul in Bihar to be shown on Google Earth when he was given a glimpse of the unique tool. Khagaul near Patna is where the great ancient astronomer Aryabhatta had an observatory. Pichai explained navigational, safety and other uses of Street View and Google Earth to Modi.

Another project that was shown to Modi was Project Iris, smart lens that measure glucose levels.

US activists protest against Modi visit
Modi was denied a US visa in 2005 for allegedly failing to control religious violence in Gujarat [Reuters]
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in the US on his maiden visit since assuming office in May.

It's a moment of triumph for Modi who was denied a US visa in 2005 for his alleged failure as the state chief minister to control the 2002 religious riots in Gujarat.

His supporters have planned to organise an elaborate welcome ceremony that includes an address by the right-wing leader at the famous Madison Square Garden in New York City. Close to 20,000 people are expected to attend the grand reception.

But there are human rights activists who continue to oppose his visit to the US. They say that justice has not been served to the riot victims.

Al Jazeera spoke to some of the activists who have planned to protest against the Indian prime minister's visit.

"The US visa ban had given me a sense of relief, that within India and outside India, people are aware of the happenings and the atrocities that are being inflicted based on religion and under the banner of democracy."

"I am sad and could not believe that the US government would turn its back on us, but then this did not surprise me. I am not in politics, but I am aware of decades of US international policies and dealings, why should we be expecting something special. But I do know that the US understands the entire situation and what happened in Gujarat…"

"People just do not go out to kill in trucks in the thousands all over a state unless it is preplanned and organised. In broad daylight on February 28, 2002, a mob of 10,000 people had surrounded 300 people, burning, looting killing children and women with swords and knives, throwing fire bombs and burning them alive. My father was cut into pieces, tortured for hours before and then his head was paraded around."

"We are protesting outside Madison Square Garden on Friday. It is to protest against the massacre in Gujarat and how the victims still have not received any justice. We are also protesting against the ongoing atrocities and hate mongering [against minorities] that is going on in India... We will not allow him to destroy India’s secularism and pluralism."

"The first thing he should do is put an end to the propaganda of 'love-jihad' and the re-conversion of Christians and Muslims to Hindus…"

"We want to say to him that abandon the ideology of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [parent body of BJP]. Stop impeding speedy process of justice."

"He should apologise first and foremost. It is completely unacceptable that he did not apologise."

"We are extremely disappointed that the Obama administration wilfully ignored several years of principled US government policy that denied Mr Modi a visa due to his sordid human rights record. Successive State Department reports identified Modi as a rights violator and cited his role in the 2002 genocide of Muslims in Gujarat. We understand that as the head of government his present visit is facilitated by international protocols. We also recognise that the US approach to policy on the human rights front is invariably subordinated to the perceived economic benefits to US corporations. Last year we supported efforts in the US Congress to place human rights at the centre of the US-India strategic dialogue in order to address this crass and unprincipled practice of ignoring human rights in favour of business…"

"Modi's elevation to the seat of prime minister of India does not absolve his culpability in the genocide committed in 2002 in Gujarat."

"We felt a blow when he was elected. We don’t have anything against the BJP when [former Prime Minister Atal Bihari] Vajpayee was there, the philosophy was different…"

"It is for Prime Minister Modi to prove everyone wrong. He has an opportunity now, although he has not demonstrated so far. He should get rid of people such as Amit Shah [a close aide of Modi] and Hindu far-right groups. He should be a Vajpayee. He can still be a Hindu nationalist but be a gentle face of Hindu nationalism not an extremist face."

"He has an opportunity to change himself. He thinks for the good of India and if he frees himself from the influence of hardliners then he can do something good. We haven’t totally lost hope in him."

First of all... its all about lobbying... nothing else more... Think Tanks and Analysis across the world covering for this entire UN and all PM's movement in USA hardly cover Modi trip. Modi is nothing in terms of global perspective.

PS: Only Indian inviting them in Silicon not any CEO it self invite Modi. Indians lobbying is active who basically organized these events not any International community nor even Business or CEO's of the giants call him.

All these Indians fabricated news since Modi came into power. Technically till today since Obama visit hardly any thing move further on ground or in real for India. Except photo shots etc...

My questions to Indians. Can anyone tell us how Facebook and all these giants will invest billions of Dollars in India where as they simultaneously investing in China, Arab and Europe ?

Do you have nay idea about how much these companies are earning ? 1000 Billions US dollars ? LOL use brain for analysis not these pictures. On ground not a single investment or anything happened since modi came into power. LOL @ these Indians hypes...

I've no issue with Indians. I've really good Indian friends (living outside India and in India). They're far more close to reality. Let me tell you difference between Indians living in India and living outside India.

From past few days Indians who are living in India (Majority) sharing these pictures with supa dupa headings title (hype) but hardly see any sharing pictures of Modi US visit from those Indians who are living outside India (Majority). People knew the reality of all these photo shots. In real except what we call them oh yaa "MOUz or yes yes baby we will on the way".

@ Last.. its lobbying nothing else more... in which Indians are really GOOD!
