Pakistani court may ban extension plan for US embassy in Islamabad
A view of Pakistan’s Supreme Court
Thu Apr 12, 2012 7:49AM GMT

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has received a petition to prohibit an extension plan for the US embassy in Islamabad over risks of espionage and security concerns, Press TV reports.

The petition has requested the Supreme Court to order Capital Development Authority (CDA) to repudiate the US embassy’s new construction plan, saying the building may be used for spying, and it incorporates security risks for the surrounding area.

The US embassy is located in Islamabad’s Red Zone, where many of Pakistan’s key governmental offices are located.

The petition comes in the wake of a letter by Pakistan’s intelligence agency to the CDA, which described the new construction plan as a ‘security hazard,” and expressed fears that movements and activities in important buildings -- including the presidential palace, prime minister’s residence and the parliament house -- could be easily monitored from the rooftop of the US complex.

The letter also criticized the CDA for giving the go-ahead for the construction of the 7-storey structure in the diplomatic enclave and urged the body to reconsider its decision.

In June 2011, the Pakistani government imposed travel restrictions on US diplomats in the country, forcing them to get a “No Objection Certificate” before leaving Islamabad for any other cities.

Pakistani experts believe that violence in the northwest of the country has decreased after the government limited the movements of the Pakistan-based US officials.

The experts say most of American diplomats traveling across Pakistan without legal documents are agents of the US spy agency, the CIA, which they say is trying to destabilize the Asian country

What is the job mandate of GoP if every thing in God earth is required to be referred to the honourable courts. Shouldnt there be any institution who be looking after such matters. For example if CDA considers it to be a hazard, on any plea, it shouldnt approve its construction. If it goes through some ministry, some gentleman sitting in the office should take some time to ponder on its implications positive or negative. If some intelligence agency is to wet it before final approval, than that should be the case. Why is that all decisions of day to day routine are to be forwarded to the courts for their decisions?

To answer all above questions, ppl are losing trust on its political godfathers. :coffee:

Well this PPP govt is on a foreign agenda. After all, who brokered NRO for them? Remember Zardari could not have held any public office if he was not NRO beneficiary. He is not directly elected anyway but is making all decisions.

This US embassy is a CIA $hit hole. If it is expanded, it will become a listening post. Ever sicne US 'diplomats' movement have been restricted and these 'diplomats' asked to leave, there is an improvement in law and order situation in the country.

If there is a govt. in Pakistan which we trust and is legitimately seen guarding interests of the country, it must also shut down US Consulate in Peshawar. After all, they re not issuing visas there!
