All exploration of natural resources is a gift of P.Musharraf govt. to Pakistan.
Present day politicians are in the process of negotiating their kickbacks.

Thar coal reserves can turn around Pakistani fortunes

According to Pakistan Economy Watch the coal deposits in Thar can change the fate of the country if utilized in a proper way. It can save oil import bill, reduce unemployment and help strengthen economy, rupee and FOREX stocks.

Dr Murtaza Mughal president of Pakistan Economy Watch in a statement said that 185 billion tonnes of coal worth USD 25 trillion can not only cater the electricity requirements of the country for next 100 years but also save almost four billion dollars in staggering oil import bill.

He said that “The project which is in limbo since a decade can help thousands of households by providing employment and help save oil import bill by USD 4-4.50 billion and help FOREX reserves to swell. It will also stabilize sliding rupee. He added that this project has already become bone of contention between the centre and Sindh province and uncertainty looms, adding that the statements of MQM Chief Mr Altaf Hussain regarding the arrival of Taliban in Karachi could pose a serious threat to this project.

Mr Murtaza said the coal power generation would cost Pakistan PKR 5.67 per unit while power generated by Independent Power Projects cost PKR 9.27. He said that “There is a remarkable difference that will certainly life economy of the country and will provide a break to poor. He said that the German, Chinese and other companies had not only carried out surveys and feasibilities of this project but also offered 100 percent investment in last 7 to 8 years but the petroleum barons always discouraged them in a very systematic way.

He demanded a probe into the matter as some elements deprived people of Pakistan from cheap source of energy for too long in their own interest. He said that petroleum lobby is very strong in Pakistan and they are against any other means of power generation except for the imported oil. This lobby is major beneficiary of the increasing oil bill that is estimated above 15 billion dollar this year.

Focus on Thar coal for power generation

By Khaleeq Kiani

ISLAMABAD, Sept 1: The government has decided to develop the Thar coal for power generation on a priority basis to overcome energy crisis following confirmed estimates that its reserves were equivalent to at least 850 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas — about 30 times higher than Pakistan’s proven gas reserves of 28 TCF.

“By using only two per cent of the existing coal reserves, we can generate around 20,000 megawatts for almost 40 years,” deputy chairman of the Planning Commission Dr Akram Sheikh told Dawn after presiding over a meeting on energy security. Coal mining in Thar requires a phased investment of $4 billion.

These estimates were confirmed by separate bankable feasibility studies conducted by Chinese and Russian experts. “We have so much of energy at home but we are looking for imported fuels,” he said, adding an effort was being made to correct the situation.

The studies had also confirmed that 185 billion tons of coal deposits in Pakistan were second only to 247-billion-ton reserves in the United States and much higher than 157 and 115-billion-ton reserves of Russia and China, respectively. Another senior official said the decision to accord top priority to coal was taken because there was no tangible or bankable progress on three proposed gas import pipelines.

Dr Sheikh said Thar coal reserves were equivalent to at least 400 billion barrels of oil — equivalent to oil reserves of Saudi Arabia and Iran put together. One estimate puts Pakistan’s coal energy at 576 billion barrels of oil which is equivalent to combined oil reserves of the three largest producers.

Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Qaim Ali Shah was briefed on Monday on the progress of Thar coal and power plant during a meeting with a five-member delegation from M/s Oracle Coal Fields Ptc UK at the Chief Minister House.

The firm is the first from the UK investing in Pakistan for coal mining and power generation. The meeting was informed that the firm has been allotted 66.1 kms in Block VI, Thar (about 32 kms north of Islamkot town). The block contains 1.4 billion tonnes of coal.

It was further said that the UK firm Oracle under the Sindh Carbon Energy Limited has planned the Q1-2010 for industrial sales and a power plant with mine design for the production of 2.5 million tonnes coal per annum.

The initial production of the Thar coal and power plant is expected in 2010-2011, and full output of 2.5 million tonnes coal is expected by 2012. Pakistan possesses 185 billion tones of coal reservoirs.

Why chamber of commerce is looking for Government to solve the electricity shortfall? While the members of chamber of commerce from all over the country have enough resources to build new power plants that run through coal. Is there no one president of chamber can take a step forward and become the leader of all chambers of the country to solve the electricity shortfall? If the president of a chamber take this step forward the whole nation is with him. :pakistan:

If elected Imran Khan is going to solve problems such as energy problems like energy shortage by using Pakistan's own resources. He's the only politicians to have realized the usefulness of Pakistan's resources. Guys you should all go to elections booths this year and have your voices heard, if you're not in Pakistan convince your relatives to, so far not many people go because they don't bleive in the politicians, Imran Khan didn't run for the previous election because he believed it was not going to be fair, but he will this time and hopefuly people will once again start voting.
