WASHINGTON: Asserting that Pakistan is the worst country in terms of religious freedom, a Congressional- established commission on international religious freedom has asked the Obama Administration to designate Pakistan as 'country of particular concern' citing "egregious" violations.

With Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in town for a meeting with US President Barack Obama, George urged the State Department to further expand its CPC list to reflect the severe violations occurring in seven other countries, such as Pakistan, which "USCIRF has called the worst situation in the world for religious freedom for countries" not currently designated by the US government as CPCs.

CPC designation is given to countries or those governments that "engage in or tolerate" systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.

The International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 (IRFA) requires the US annually to designate as "countries of particular concern" or CPCs, and to take action to encourage improvements in each CPC country.

"Now that the IRF Report has been released, the next step is for the State Department to promptly designate the worst violators as CPCs and to leverage those designations to press for much-needed reforms in those countries," George said.

In its recent report on IRF, the State Department has said that there is widespread violation of human rights of religious minorities in the country, in particular the Hindus and Christians.

In July 2014, the State Department designated nine countries as CPCs: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

State Department's 2014 IRF report said Pakistan "government's general failure to investigate, arrest, or prosecute those responsible for religious freedom abuses promoted an environment of impunity that fostered intolerance and acts of violence, according to domestic and international human rights organisations."

USCIRF's 2015 annual report, released in April, recommended that these countries be re-designated as CPCs, and also called for eight additional designations: Central African Republic, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.

who cares? seriously? Its the US may be some countries don't care but most of the world care

The US is irrelevant. They should fix the ISIS problem which they brought into this world before lecturing others about religious freedom. Lately, the Americans have problems with many countries in the world.

Where is American outrage to be found when Indian Hindu extremists kill Muslims for consuming beef meat? Where is American outrage at mass rape of women in India? Just a lot of bla bla...

No one cares about what an American mouthpiece body thinks or says. Like Trump says, no one takes the Americans seriously. That is exactly the way it is.

India bombarded the golden temple (the holiest site for sikhs) in 1984 and killed 250,000 sikhs over that period of time, they then proceeded to kill kashmiri muslims and bury there bodies in unmarked graves all over the kashmir valley, a few years later 2000+ Gujrati muslims were killed by hindu extreemists all under the watchful eye of Narida Modi who didn't once come to condemn the acts rather to encourage further violence, and this motherfucker of man became you're leader the same guy who watched over 2000 ''indian'' muslims get slaughtered and didn't do a single thing to stop the violence.
In many areas of pakistan minorities do live in religous harmony, and there are serious issues concerning violence against shia's etc but lets not paint you're beloved hindustan as some kind of golden boy in this area.

Pakistan should be designated among 'countries of particular concern': USCIRF - The Economic Times

Reminds me of that report that claimed Pakistan was the most dangerous country in the world. Equally misinformed and equally hilarious at the same time. The US can send that report to where the sun doesn't shine.

And even worse is the pathetic Indian propagandist distortion, ''Worst''. Do these illiterates at the India Times know the meaning of "worst"?
'country of particular concern'
nine countries as CPCs: Burma, China, Eritrea, Iran, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
eight additional designations: Central African Republic, Egypt, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Syria, Tajikistan, and Vietnam.
Being among 17 ''countries of particular concern'' does not mean "worst". Even if the US report was to be taken seriously.

This idiotic report puts AFGHANISTAN in the same category as Indonesia, Turkey, Russia and Malaysia. Yes. Seriously. The amount of bullshit is overwhelming.

Well, I suppose Indians can be proud of the fact that they are grouped in the same category as Afghanistan.

And of course, the Indian media did not touch on this part of the report:

"IRFA bars the entry of such individuals to the United States, but the provision has been invoked only once: in March 2005, it was used to exclude then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi of Gujarat state in India due to his complicity in riots in his state in 2002 that resulted in the deaths of an estimated 1,100 to 2,000 Muslims."

A report which put Afghanistan having better religious freedom than China shows its credibility.

Was Pakistan always this intolerant towards different religious views?
I'm not gonna be hypocrite and exonerate Pakistan but is it fair to exonerate U.S. and Gulf 'Muslim Brother' States
from all the existing religious intolerance in Pakistan?

I'd like to see a report on U.S. funded foreign groups- both direct and indirect(read Saudis).
U.S. is fast becoming one of the most hypocrite Nations. No wonder Western people are praising Putin.
