Pakistan willing to train Afghan army, police: FM - People's Daily Online June 25, 2010

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi Thursday reiterated his country's offer to train Afghan army and police.

Pakistan on a number of occasions had extended the offer to impart training to Afghan army, but Afghanistan has not accepted the offer.

Pakistani Foreign Minister met his Afghan counterpart Zalmai Rasool in Islamabad and reiterated the army training offer but there was no mention to the offer by the Afghanistan foreign minister when he spoke on his turn.

"Pakistan has once again offered to train Afghan national army, police and Afghan diplomats," Qureshi said in his opening statement at a joint press conference with Afghan counterpart.

Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rasool told the news conference that they have comprehensive discussion on security and bilateral issues. He noted that bilateral relations have improved tremendously.

He said that he briefed Qureshi about the International Conference on Afghanistan in Kabul scheduled next month, which will bring together representatives of more than 70 partner countries, international and regional organizations and financial institutions to deliberate and endorse an Afghan government-led plan for improved development, governance and stability.

There is no reaction, the Afghan FM is/was in country, as usual the diplomatic offer of any help if needed.

They have much more experienced US trainers looking after them, also they have their old trusted friends to look upto.

No need for Pakistan to train any of them, usual diplomatic talk.

i dont think it will be a reaction to the other issue. pakistan had offered to train police/army in the past as well.

Well we already trained 3 batches of ANPF in early 2008 at the National Police Academy, Islamabad. I was visiting instructor for the second batch of trainees.

The training was conducted in National Police Academy Islamabad and Anti Terrorist Training School Islamabad. So this is not like we are asking for fresh cooperation, we already had a working agreement.

The training included emergency management, leadership, post blast and forensic investigation, security management, human rights and weapon drills.

But i don't think Kerzai will go for this this new offer, despite the previous assistance i think his government has other plans. Well all the best to them.

If that were the case ..wouldn't it make sense for them to get trained by Pak army ..get to know how their "future enemy" operates, its tactics , weapons etc ??..reminds me of an old Chinese proverb "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer"

My reference is to the news article and not the actual offer. We all know the way media latches on to the words. Since the news of Afghan army officers getting trained in India was hot today, the offer from Pakistan made a nice sound byte..
