Pakistan will receive the first batch of SH-1 155mm self-propelled howitzer this year

The Pakistan Army will standardize its artillery capability to 155 mm. Pakistan army will procure a range of light, medium and heavy towed and self-propelled howitzer artillery from China and Turkey to replace all non-155 mm and older systems.

Pakistan will receive the first batch of SH-1 155mm self-propelled howitzer this year.Although the exact number of Pakistan SH-1 155mm self-propelled howitzer under contract is not known but it is likely to be around 90. So does that mean the South African SP system is out of the equation now, as some were speculating would happen, with the SA parliament not approving the deal?

SH1 155mm Self-Propelled Howitzer

The SH-1 is a 155mm self-propelled howitzer developed by China North Industries Group Corporation (NORINCO) for the export market. The artillery system has been in development since 2002, the was first revealed during the 2007 Abu Dhabi International Defence Exhibition (IDEX 2007) held between 18 and 22 February. The vehicle is highly mobile with a maximum road speed of 90km/h. The artillery was not intended for the domestic market, but it may be adopted by the PLA in the future if proven to be a successful design.

The main armament of the SH1 is a 155mm/52-calibre howitzer, which can fire a range of ammunitions developed by NORINCO, including: Extended-Range, Full-Bore, Rocket-Assisted, High-Explosive (ERFB-RA/HE) and Extended-Range Full-Bore, Base-Bleed, High-Explosive (ERFB-BB/HE). When using the ERFB-BB/HE round, the howitzer can reach a maximum range of 53km. The howitzer can also fire the 155mm semi-active laser-guided projectile developed by NORINCO based on the Russian Instrument Design Bureau (KBP) 152mm Krasnopol projectile. In addition, the howitzer is able to use the standard NATO 155mm ammunitions. The vehicle carries 20 rounds onboard. Secondary weapon includes a 12.7mm QJC88 anti-aircraft machine gun mounted on the roof of the driving cab.

The artillery system is mounted on a 6X6 wheeled chassis with a forward engine and an armour-protected driving cab. The vehicle can climb a 1.2m-high vertical obstacle, and has a maximum road speed of 90km/h. The vehicle is equipped with two hydraulically operated stabilisers which are lowered in preparation for the firing. The howitzer barrel is electric-operated, with an elevation of 0~70 degrees. The artillery system has a combat weight of 22 tonnes, and is operated by a crew of five.

The SH1 is equipped with a computerised fire-control system, with a muzzle velocity sensor which feed the data directly to the fire-control computer. The artillery system is equipped with navigation, positioning, targeting, and communications systems, all of which adopt the modular design for easy maintenance and upgrade. The onboard communication system enables the artillery system to be connected into the C4ISR network of an artillery company or battalion for information sharing and automated command and control.

if for any reason, Pakistan chose something else, it would not be because of political turbulence in south africa. our ties with them are as solid as stone, it's just that china and turkey are giving us superior equipment.

For comparison purposes, G6 Rhino specs. Note that the G6 weighs almost twice as much as the SH1, so a different class of SP?

I haven't been able to locate any RoF specs for the SH1.

155mm SELF-PROPELLED GUN-HOWITZER
The G6 is a three-axle, six-wheeled, heavily armored system mounting a modified version of the G5 cannon. The G6 is an agile super-range weapon that forms the backbone of a fully integrated and flexible artillery system. It was developed and refined primarily to support rapidly advancing mechanised infantry and armoured divisions.

The G6 is fully compatible with NATO standard 155-mm ammunition and has a direct fire range of 3000 meters (using a Frag-HE round). Used together with the specially developed modular charge ammunition system, the 45-calibre gun provides accurate coverage of a target zone of more than 1000 square kilometres, without change of position. 45 rounds are carried on board. The onboard gyro-controlled navigation and automatic laying systems enable the gun to be brought into action independently within 60 seconds of stopping and it can move off 30 seconds after firing, thus presenting an elusive target. The G6 is equipped with an electronically controlled hydraulic flick rammer that provides an initial rate of fire of 3 rounds per minute.

High mobility is ensured by the permanent six-wheel drive purpose-built vehicle, powered by an air-cooled diesel engine through a six-speed automatic gearbox. The maximum speed of the G6 is 85 km/h. The rigid chassis is actually divided into two parts, a driver’s/engine compartment and a crew compartment. In order to distribute its weight and to maintain mobility over sand and soft terrain, the G6 employs large 21x25 run-flat tires. All-independent torsion bar suspension, differential locks and on-the-move tyre inflation system (optional) offer superior traction and high levels of crew comfort. The driver controls a central tire-inflation system to vary the ground pressure. The system can also be used to maintain some degree of tire pressure in case of air leakage from small punctures. A 45-hp (34 kw) Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) provides power for turret operations, recharging the batteries, and the driver/crew compartment air conditioning system.

The armoured turret and hull provide protection against small arms fire, shell splinters, landmine explosions and, in the vital 60° frontal arc, against 20mm attack. The frontal 60° arc provides protection against 20-mm type ammunition. Additionally, the shape and armor thickness of the chassis hull allows it to withstand at least three mine detonations (against TM46 antitank landmine or equivalent) before being immobilized. Separate fire extinguishing systems can be fitted in the turret and engine compartment. A ventilation system or BC protection and air conditioning can be provided. The separation of the driver/engine compartment from the crew compartment also facilitates survival against mines. The connection between the two is perforated with blowout holes to direct the force of the blast upwards, away from any personnel compartments. The separation also allows the driver to be beyond the detonation point before the mine is activated. The driver also has bullet-resistant glass windows that can be further protected by armored shutters, although it limits him to the use of a periscopic viewing port. The vehicle commander has limited steering and braking capability if the driver becomes a casualty. The crew compartment has four firing ports (two each side) so the crew can engage targets without exposing themselves to return fire. A wide range of optional subsystems is available to increase the efficiency of the G6 and its crew. They include the following:

* Inertial navigation and laying or back-up laying systems
* Night vision equipment
* Barrel cooling and thermal warning systems
* Fire control computer interface
* Muzzle velocity analyzer
* Explosion control for fuel tanks

These would be good for transporting difficult terrain we control...but we'll need something like G6 to seriously take on the Afghan issues.

1-pakistan didnt like turkish 155mm 52 caliber panter towed howitzers?
2-why pakistan doesnt consider turkish 155mm 52 caliber fırtına sph?
3-why u still trying to get 39 caliber used american junks paladins?

Choosing the Chinese SP Howitzer and Turkish Panter demonstrates that Pakistan Army at this time is tied down due to lack of funds and payment terms (Both the Chinese and Turks may have offered part payments spread over a number of years). South Africans, in addition to the likely delayed Export License approval and fear of any future Commonwealth related sanctions that may jeopardize purchase of spares/ after sales support etc, may also have wanted money in advance and pay as you go. Army has preferred to go with a Chinese SP Howitzer and Turkish Panter mainly to have the peace of mind of continuous support without any fear or worry of political or tactical sanctions etc. So good move by PA at the end of the day! :enjoy:

1. Not sure if the low number implies a 'dislike' rather than use for evaluations - it may still be in the running for future acquisitions.

2. Firtina is tracked, and its seems the PA is considering wheeled SP artillery (more mobility).

3. 56 million for 115 M109A5 howitzers seems pretty good, especially since they would have commonality with the existing M109A2's.

wheeled howitzers has no armor protection.they ll be destroyed in the first enemy counter artillery fire.

even g6

i think pzh2000 and t155 are best solutions.

my understanding is that the 12 unit order is a evaluation / trials order after which a JV between POF and MKEK will be signed!

iS THERE ANY NEWS AS TO WHEN/IF PAKISTAN ARE TO LICENSE MANUFACTURE THE TURKISH 155 PANTHER GUN?
