What's new

Pakistan Vs West Indies - Starting November 12, 2008

Nasir Jamshed absence will give chance to Khuram Manzoor to perform yet once more. I do like Nasir Jamshed though, while he is there he can change the match for you. While you have Salman Butt who can guide the whole way.

ABU DHABI: Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik hopes the three-match one-day international series against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi will mark a turnaround in the fortunes of his side.

On the eve of Wednesday's match at the Zayed Stadium in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi, Malik said their familiarity with the pitch and the enthusiastic crowd support his team can expect here, will be important factors as Pakistan tries to shake off the rust from a lack of recent international action.

The series assumes added importance for Pakistan as this is the only international series they play before hosting cross-border rivals India in three Tests and five one-day international matches in January and February next year.

The Zayed Stadium has hosted five ODI matches and Pakistan have featured in all of them. They have won three, two against Sri Lanka and one against India, and lost once each to the two countries.

'This may just be one of the most important series we have played in recent times and we are eager to do well,' said Malik, who also happens to be the most successful batsman in Abu Dhabi with an aggregate of 174 runs in five outings.

'We are hosting India early next year and we need to get into some kind of rhythm before that. We have a few youngsters in the side and this may be their only chance to prove their ability in international cricket before we meet India,' he added.

While admitting that knowledge of the pitch may give his team a slight advantage, Malik added: 'The pitch here is a very good one, maybe a bit biased towards the batsmen. That should help the West Indies as well because they have a very good batting side.'

Pakistan, who lost their top batsman Mohammad Yousuf to the unofficial Indian Cricket League recently, have been boosted by the return of paceman Shoaib Akhtar. Of the 63 wickets that have fallen in Abu Dhabi, fast bowlers have taken 40.

'We did pick up five fast bowlers for this series, but that doesn't mean pace is going to be our only strategy. A lot will depend on how the boys are bowling, and also on whether we are batting first or second,' said Malik.

West Indies captain Chris Gayle said Pakistan can never be underestimated and hoped his batsmen will fire in the series.

'Abu Dhabi is a new venue for us, and we would like to make a good start here. Pakistan may not have the best preparation for this series, but they are always a very dangerous side. Their bowling attack has always been good and balanced, so it is up to our batsmen now to take up the challenge,' he said.

'Players like Lionel Baker, Brendan Nash and Shawn Findlay are all new and are very exciting prospects. This series is a great opportunity for them to prove themselves.'

The second and third one-day internationals are on Friday and Sunday.

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal hit two successive sixes in the final over as Pakistan scored a thrilling four-wicket win over the West Indies with just one ball to spare in the opening one day international of their three-match series.

Akmal scored 24 from just nine balls to lead Pakistan to a thrilling win over West Indies.

Replying to the West Indies' total of 294-9, built around a spectacular ton by captain Chris Gayle -- the first-ever century at the Zayed Stadium -- Pakistan reached their victory target with the penultimate ball of the match.

Pakistan needed 16 runs in their final over, but Akmal smashed two sixes in the first two balls of Jerome Taylor a shock win. Akmal remained unbeaten on 24 from just nine balls.

Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik also played a big role, scoring 66 runs in 50 balls after his side got off to a slow start. Opener Khurram Manzoor top-scored with 69 in 89 balls.

Debutant pace bowler Lionel Baker was the pick of the West Indian bowling, picking up 3-41. The 24-year-old Leeward Islands paceman pitches the ball slightly short of a length and just outside the off stump, cramping most Pakistan batsmen.

Earlier, Gayle made a whirlwind 113 with five sixes and 11 fours in just 106 balls as his side raced to 294-9. The previous highest score in Abu Dhabi was 92 by India.

After a slow start of 11 runs in the first five overs, the Jamaican went into overdrive, hitting Abdur Rauf, who was filling in for the injured Shoaib Akhtar, for 11 runs in his third over and 17 in his fourth, which included four hits to the fence.

Malik made his first change thereafter, bringing in Umar Gul, but Gayle dispatched him for two successive sixes to bring up his side's 50 in the 10th over.

Gayle shared 125 runs for the first wicket with Sewnarine Chattergoon (33), who holed out to mid-on when Malik brought himself on as second change bowler in the 18th over with the third powerplay still on.

He then added 73 runs for the second wicket with Ramnaresh Sarwan (55), but was finally caught when he mistimed a pull off Gul to Shahid Afridi at mid-wicket. Two balls before that, Gul had dropped an easy catch off his own bowling.

Pakistan did well to contain West Indies, who were 213-2 after 37 overs. Paceman Sohail Tanveer and Gul were the most successful bowlers -- with Tanveer taking 3-66 in his 10 overs.

The remaining two matches in the series will be played on Friday and Sunday.

yep 3-0 whitewash

some good things came out of this series> strong bowling by S.Tanvir/U.Gul tandem esp in the death overs.>good middle order developing after the exit of Inzy and M.Yusuf.

some weaknesses> fielding, couldnt catch! esp this new guy Saeed.>openers still a issue.> get rid of S.Akhtar please.> and S.Afridi. really he is now a bowler only. give chances to new guys to develop.

I saw some of the games awsome news kick A$$!! God bless Pakistan long live Pakistan.

this is a joke?..........i have listened Pak has won......!.......i think our team's sense of humour is very good...............

Pakistan new management is showing that they are aggressive, and they are the real deal. Talks are already out about hiring Waqar Younis as the bowling coach, while Amir Sohail, Ijaz Ahmed are already in the management, and fielding coach position respectively.

Pakistan is now the 4th best team in the world. Being 1st or 2nd will take time, but its not impossible with talent gap between the top 4 teams in the world.
