Six policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), wrere killed as militants ambushed a police vehicle in south Kashmir’s Achbaal area on Friday afternoon.

The SHO identified as Sub Inspector Feroz Dar, a resident of Pulwama, fell victim to indiscriminate firing from militants, Director-General of Police S.P. Vaid told PTI in Srinagar.

Six policemen, including the driver of the vehicle, were on a routine round in their jeep, he said.

Preliminary reports suggest a large group of militants opened indiscriminate fire on the police vehicle near Achabal in Anantnag district in south Kashmir.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the area as south Kashmir witnessed widespread protests on Friday in the wake of an encounter in Anantnag’s Arwani area.

Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba is believed to be behind the attack, a senior police official said, adding they wanted to avenge militant deaths in the Arwani encounter.

Two civilians were reportedly killed near the encounter site in south Kashmir's Arwani village in Kulgam, where three Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants are believed to be trapped.

The civilian was identified as Kharpora village resident Mohammad Ashraf Khar. He was apparently hit by a bullet during the clash between the security forces and the locals. According to the hospital sources, he died of his injuries.

The police, however, are yet to confirmed his death. More than 12 civilians were reported injured during the search and cordon operation in Arwani.

Initial reports suggested that following a tip-off, the Army and the police’s Special Operations Group cordoned off Eidgah Mohalla in Arwani area in the early hours and they came under fire from the trapped militants. “We suspect three militants are hiding in the area. We cannot immediately confirm any other details,” said a police official.

Sources said the police suspected that LeT commander Junaid Mattoo may be among the trapped militants. There were unconfirmed reports of one militant killed so far.

The authorities snapped Internet services in parts of south Kashmir to contain protests.

Meanwhile, Bandipora resident Nazir Ahmad, who was injured in a firing by the Shashatra Seema Bal in Srinagar’s Rangreth, died of his injuries in the morning.

KASHMIRENCOUNTER

Army jawans rush towards the encounter site at Arwani Kulgam district in south kashmir on Friday.

Junaid Ahmad Mattoo gunned down two policemen in broad daylight at Anantnag bus stand in June last year.
Bodies of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) member Junaid Ahmad Mattoo and two others were recovered on Saturday from the encounter site in Arwani village of south Kashmir.

Besides 24-year-old Mattoo alias ‘Jana’, the other two bodies were those of 18-year-old Adil Mushtaq Mir alias ‘Nana’ and 20-year-old Nisar Ahmad Wani.

Hailing from Khudwani village of Kulgam, 24-year-old Mattoo joined militancy in June 2015. He had a meteoric rise within the Lashkar group and was appointed commander of south Kashmir after he gunned down two policemen in broad daylight at Anantnag bus stand in June last year.

While Mir hailed from Frasbal area of Pampore, Wani was from Heff Shremal of Shopian district. Both joined militancy after the death of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen poster boy Burhan Wani last year.

Police had laid a cordon around a house at Malik Mohalla in Arwani village at 8 a.m. on Friday following an intelligence tip-off about the presence of the three militants there. The first engagement with terrorists took place at 10 a.m., after which additional forces were rushed to the spot.

By late afternoon, firing stopped but two houses caught fire during the encounter. After the fire tenders doused the raging flames, police and other security forces, which were already embattled by pelting of stones, began a search operation in the rubble.

The security forces were also fired upon from the crowd that was indulging in pelting of stones, police said, adding that the Lashkar-e-Taiba militants were desperate to save Mattoo.

The search operation was also hampered after six policemen, including officer Feroz Ahmed Dar, were gunned down at Achabal area, 20 km south of the encounter site. This act was a revenge by Lashkar-e-Taiba for the killing of Mattoo and two others.

During Friday’s encounter, two civilians were also killed. In the morning itself, a civilian identified as Mohammad Ashraf Khar, 34, was killed in the crossfire between the security forces and the militants.

Khar, a resident of Kharpora Arwani area, was rushed to the district hospital at Bijbehara where he was declared brought dead, police said.

Ahsan Mushtaq, 15, was killed after he was hit by bullets near the site of the encounter, the police said.

Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said today that the killing of six policemen in a terrorist ambush in Kashmir was an act of "cowardice".

A group of militants, believed to be from Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashker-e-Taiba, ambushed a police party at Achabal in Anantnag district of South Kashmir yesterday, killing six policemen. They also disfigured the faces of the policemen before walking away with their weapons.

A sub-inspector, identified as Pulwama-resident Feroz Ahmed Dar, a driver and four other policemen, who were on a routine round in their jeep, died in the attack.

"Killing of six policemen by terrorists in #Achabal is a cowardice act. My condolences to the bereaved families. Salute to martyrs," Jaitley tweeted.

It is believed that the militants wanted to take revenge for the Arwani encounter in which their local commander, Junaid Mattoo, was killed.

The escalation in militant attacks on Jammu and Kashmir police personnel is because of the “frustration” of the ultras, director general of police SP Vaid said on Friday, asserting that necessary measures would be taken to prevent them from carrying such acts.

“We will take necessary measures. This is the frustration of the militants. Whether a militant is killed or a civilian or a cop, it is the Kashmiri who dies. The bloodshed will not take us anywhere, it is only the murder of humanity,” the DGP told reporters here.

He said the militants were targeting the local police as it was fighting them with eagerness.

“The local police works on the anti-militancy front with eagerness, that is why they (militants) are targeting them (police). But I am sure that we will control this soon,” the DGP said.

Earlier, Vaid led civil, police and security forces’ officers and jawans at DPL Srinagar in laying floral wreaths on the mortal remains of the constable Shazad Dilawar Sofi, resident of Ashtengoo village of north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, who was killed in militant firing in Hyderpora area of Srinagar on Thursday.

The DGP termed the constable’s killing as “murder of humanity and Kashmiriyat”.

“This is the murder of humanity and Kashmiriyat, for which our neighbouring country is using our people for its geo-political purposes,” Vaid said.

He said the cop and a youth killed allegedly in security forces’ firing in Rangreth area of city were related to each other.

“They are cousins, belonging to the same family and the same village. That is why I am saying that the people here are being used as pawns,” the DGP said.

Asked about militants warning of attacks on policemen, the top cop said, “We will face that (challenge)”.

Both are linked.
There is a need for scepticism about India's claim to find "Chinese weapons" in conflict areas.

The classic lie of India.
1, the terrorist attacks in Mumbai found Chinese grenade. But no evidence can be provided.
2, India helicopters provide cover for Chinese warships. But... For example, what would Americans do if India helicopters "covered" American warships without communication? so sorry, we didn't get a cover report from the India helicopter then.

I mean, when you want Indians to lie, consider the underlying logic.

Tension prevails in Kashmir

Tension prevailed in Kashmir Valley for the second consecutive day on Sunday as restrictions continued in parts of Srinagar.

Meanwhile, militants opened fire at security forces in three places. In Bijbehara, militants fired at army’s road opening party. “Militants fled immediately after opening a few shots,” said a police spokesman. Militants also opened fire on the Army and CRPF camps in Bijbehara and Budgam on Saturday night.

Meanwhile in south Kashmir, where two civilians and three militants died in Friday’s gunfight, a spontaneous shutdown impacted life. There were also sporadic incidents of stone-pelting.

Locals alleged security forces barged into their residences following an incident of stone pelting in Astan Pora in Anantnag and “thrashed inmates”.

Meanwhile, train services resumed services after halting it for two days. The service on Budgam-Srinagar-Anantnag- Qazigund- Banihal track has been resumed, said an official. Most separatist leaders were also placed under house arrest.

A 26-year-old youth, who was injured after unknown gunmen opened fire at him at Pingleena area of Pulwama in south Kashmir on Saturday evening, succumbed to injuries in Srinagar hospital on Saturday night.

The victim has been identified as Aijaz Ahmad Malik. He had received two bullets in the abdomen.

‘No threat to pilgrims’
Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani said on Sunday that there was no terror threat to the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims.

“The people of Kashmir have always been friendly and generous to visitors, especially the Amarnath pilgrims. They have treated the Amarnath pilgrims with unique hospitality,” he said.

“An adverse propaganda is being launched by the media suggesting that the pilgrims are facing a threat from the people of the State. Terror threat to the Amarnath Yatra is a brazen lie, aimed at maligning the people’s movement,” he said. He said the people of Kashmir “are not against any religion.” “Fanatical forces in India are desperate to give a bad name to the freedom movement and are relying on negative propaganda...”

Two militants were today killed in an encounter with security forces in Rafiabad area of Kashmir’s Baramulla district, an Army official said.

The militants were holed up inside a house in Pazalpora village in Sopore township of the district.

The Army official said two weapons were seized and operations were still on in the area.

Following intelligence inputs about the presence of militants, security forces had launched a cordon and search operation last night.

A police official said the search operation was halted for the night but the forces maintained the cordon to stop the militants from escaping.

The operation was resumed this morning and the gunfight started after the trapped militants opened fire on the forces, he said.

Two additional battalions -- a total of 2000 men -- of the Army will be sent as reinforcement to four troubled districts of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.

With the presence of additional forces in Kulgam, Anantnag, Shopian and Pulwama, some army camps in Shopian and Pulwama will be revived again, they said.

The officials said the two additional battalions, which have already started moving to Kashmir, will be posted to some of the more vulnerable areas of the four districts.

Major General BS Raju, General officer Command of the Army’s Victor Force, whose area of responsibility is South Kashmir, today surveyed the region, which has often been described as “ground zero” because of increased militant activities there.

The officials said the army camps had been set up to help locals who were “possibly intimidated” by the militants.

The places where camps are being set up includes Lidder in Pulwama, which officials see as the base for militants shuttling between Shopian, Pulwama and Budgam in Central Kashmir.

Sources said new camps will be established at Zainpora, on the border of Heff Shremal, and the Khudwani and Nagbal areas which fall in these four districts.

The Army has also launched a programme to meet villagers and to talk to them about the need to stay away from counter- insurgency operations, they said.

The sources said locals were often herded towards an encounter site by members of militant groups to hamper the army operations.

“Once a semblance of security is ensured in these areas, people may not follow the diktats,” an official said.

The decision on redeployment was taken after intelligence reports said South Kashmir had turned into a militant hub.

The encounter lasted for over six hours.
Three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants were killed in a night long encounter in Pulwama. Their charred bodies were recovered on Thursday morning.

Police sources said all three trapped militants, who engaged the security forces in a gunfight on Wednesday night, were killed in a house. The house of a civilian was completely damaged in the encounter as it caught fire.

The slain militants were identified as Majid, Irshad and Shariq. Two rifles have been recovered from encounter site. All killed militants were locals. One of the three militants is a teenager, aged around 14.

The fresh killing takes the toll of slain militants to five in the past 24 hours.

PTI adds...
The encounter lasted for over six hours.

Majid Dar, one of the slain militants, was involved in a number of killings, including that of sarpanch of Kakapora and district president of Pulwama, a police official said here.

This is the first successful counter-insurgency operation in Pulwama area, which is believed to have large presence of local militants aided with a strong-network of over ground workers, he said.

The successful operation is a big blow to the LeT terror outfit, which recently lost its commander Junaid Mattoo in an encounter at Arwin village in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on June 17, he added.

This is the second successful operation against the terror outfit within three days.

On Wednesday, two militants were killed in an encounter in Sopore township of Baramulla district in north Kashmir.

Pakistani troops today carried out an attack 600 metres inside the Indian territory in Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir, killing two jawans and losing one of their men in the retaliatory action.

One of the attacker was injured in the Indian retaliatory action and his body was extricated under the cover of heavy firing by the Pakistani troops from their posts across the LoC, an Army official said.

The Border Action Team (BAT), which generally comprises special forces of the Pakistan Army and some terrorists, carried out the attack at around 2 pm with the aid of cover fire by the Pakistani troops from their posts, he said.

This was the third BAT action in Poonch this year.

The official said the Indian Army's 'Area Domination Patrol' was "targeted by the armed intruders and exchange of fire occurred."

"Pakistan’s BAT team was 600 metres within the Indian side of the LoC and 200 metres from the Indian posts," the official said.

The Indian troops retaliated and in the firefight, two Indian jawans were killed, the official said.

A week after six Jammu and Kashmir policemen, including an officer, were killed in an ambush by militants, over 20 station house officers (SHO) posted in sensitive areas of the Valley will get bulletproof vehicles for movement.

“Owing to the level of threat that exists to local police officers, it was imperative that they travel their areas in these vehicles,” a senior J&K police officer told HT, adding that the vehicles will be given to officers in parts of south Kashmir and other disturbed areas of the Valley.

According to reports, 29 policemen have been killed in the last one and a half years in militant attacks in Kashmir.

Last week, six policemen, including SHO Feroz Ahmed, were killed in a militant ambush at Thujwara in Achabal area of south Kashmir.

Following the attack, senior police officials decided to transfer bulletproof vehicles given to them by the government to the SHOs for the time being, the officer said.

The move comes amidst reports that the slain officer Feroz Ahmed, a native of the region, had requested for a bulletproof vehicle several times before his death due to threat posed by the militants.

SP Vaid, director general of police, without specifying, said a lot of bulletproof vehicles were destroyed during the 2014 floods and during the agitation that followed the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander Burhan Wani.

“J&K police is sufficiently equipped to deal in the current situation, but a lot of our vehicles were destroyed during the flood and in the 2016 agitation, but we are trying our best to safeguard our officers, and at the same time, fight militancy,” Vaid said.

A group of youngsters tried to drag him away and he opened fire at them with a pistol, injuring three in the lower limbs. Subsequently, he was beaten to death.

The police have identified the person killed outside the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar as a deputy superintendent of police.

"Another police officer sacrificed his life in line of duty. DySP Mohammed Ayub Pandith was attacked and beaten to death by a mob at Nowhatta on Thursday night," said a police spokesman.

The incident happened during the Shab-e-Qadr, night-long prayers held in Ramzan time, as Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was inside the mosque. Three locals were injured in a shootout.

Eyewitnesses told The Hindu that a group of youngsters, on spotting the policeman making a video of a demonstration outside the Jamia Masjid between 11:30 p.m. and 12:00 a.m., tried to drag him away and he opened fire at them with a pistol, injuring three in the lower limbs. As rumour spread that he belonged to some "security agencies and was a non-Muslim," a mob lynched him.

A police official said policemen fired in the air to chase away the mob and retrieve the officer's body and a clash ensued. No personnel in civvies was present at the spot and "all policemen were safe", the police said.

The Jamia Masjid area is known for throwing of stones and clashes on occasions like Shab-e-Qadr. The incident assumes significance as the Mirwaiz was inside the mosque and delivering his sermon.

The incident did not impact the obligatory prayers and other ceremonies held inside the mosque. Tear-smoke shells and firing, however, spread panic in the area. The incident was followed by pro-Pakistan and pro-militant slogans in the area.

Meanwhile, the authorities have decided to impose curfew like restrictions under Section 144 in seven police stations in Srinagar to contain the situation emerging after the civilian and militant killings on Thursday in south Kashmir and the latest incident.

No Friday prayers will be allowed at the mosque in the wake of the restrictions. The Mirwaiz was planning to address a major congregation at the mosque on the occasion of the last Friday of Ramzan.

Kashmir remains on the edge from Thursday morning since the killing of three Lashkar-e-Taiba militants in an encounter.

Army jawan Sandeep Jadhav had promised to come home to celebrate the birthday of his son Shivam tomorrow, but to the utter devastation of his family the jawan will return home in a coffin.

A pall of gloom descends on the jawan's native Kalegao village in Sillod tehsil of Aurangabad district.

The 34-year-old soldier, who belonged to the 15 Maratha Light Infantry, was yesterday killed in an attack by a team of Pakistani special forces, which had sneaked 600 metres across the Line of Control (LoC) into the Poonch sector of Jammu and Kashmir.

Shravan Mane, a 24-year-old sepoy from Kolhapur, was also killed in the attack. When Jadhav's father Sarjerao learnt about his death, he decided not to play the television at home so that the family does not come to know about the fateful news.

One of the villagers said, "Sandeep had assured his family that he would come home for Shivam's birthday. As the birthday preparations were going on in full swing yesterday evening, Sarjerao decided not to play the television news at home when he learnt about his son's death. He also asked some of his relatives not to talk about it to his family members, including Jadhav's wife, elder daughter and others."

However, by late this afternoon, they were finally briefed about the incident for the conduct of his last rites.

Aurangabad District Collector Naval Kishor Ram said, "Sandeep's body would reach Aurangabad by this evening. But, we have not received any confirmation about the shifting of the body yet."

Meanwhile, in Kolhapur, the family members of Shravan Mane are waiting for his body to arrive.
Kolhapur District Collector Avinash Subhedar told PTI his office was in touch with the Army officials in Jammu.

"We are hopeful of his body reaching Kolhapur by this evening," he said.

Mane, a resident of Gogave village in Shahuwadi tehsil of Kolhapur district, was a bachelor and had joined the Army only a couple of years back.

"All the male members of his family, including the extended ones, are connected with the Army. His father had served in the Army as a jawan. Mane's elder brother and brother-in-law are at present serving in various battalions of the Army," Subhedar said.

Sanjay Shinde, resident district collector of Kolhapur said, "We are in touch with the Army officials in Jammu about shifting of Mane's body. We are told that it should first reach Jammu, as the route from Poonch to Jammu is difficult. Once the body reaches Jammu, the Army will either carry it to Pune or directly take it to Belgaum, closest airport from Kolhapur."

A day after Pakistan army’s Border Action Team (BAT) ambushed and killed two Indian soldiers, the Indian Army on Friday retrieved the body of a Pakistani gunman from the conflict area in Khari Karmara of the Krishna Ghati sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district.

The border patrol of the Indian Army had killed two BAT gunmen on Thursday afternoon in the retaliatory fire in the Chakan-da-Bagh area of KG sector along the Line of Control, the de facto border between the two nations.

While fleeing the Pakistani gunmen carried one of the two dead bodies of their colleagues, the second one remained in the conflict area, said an intelligence official. It was within the visual reach of the Indian Army and it was retrieved cautiously, he added.

The slain gunman, who could be seen wearing Pakistani army fatigues, is suspected to be a commando of the special services group (SSG) of the Pakistani army, he said. The BAT is a rogue force of heavily armed terrorists and army regulars. These teams often sneak into the Indian side of the LoC and ambush patrols.

The BAT killed naik Sandip Jadhav and sepoy Savan Mane, both from Maharashtra, on Thursday around 2pm.

A couple of hours before the attack, 31-member team of Pakistan Rangers and Border Security Personnel (BSF) exchanged gifts and sweets at the Chamliyal Mela in Ramgarh sector of Samba district, 45 km from Jammu.

Thursday’s BAT attack was third this year so far. On May 1, India lost junior commissioned officer Paramjit Singh of Amritsar and BSF head constable Prem Sagar of Dewaria in Uttar Pradesh in a similar attack in the KG Basin sector.

Their bodies were mutilated and heads were taken away, an act that triggered international outrage against Pakistan.

The two slain soldiers on Thursday were not mutilated.

Pandith started his career as a sub-inspector in the 1990s. He was working as a DSP in the security wing of Jammu and Kashmir police and had been at the mosque post for quite some time. Many locals who frequent the area knew him. Policemen posted in the security wing do not wear uniform as a matter of service regulation.
