Pakistan urges no militarisation of space after India tests anti-satellite missile

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan issued a call against military threats in outer space on Wednesday, hours after India said it had shot down one of its own satellites in a demonstration of its growing power in space.

“Space is the common heritage of mankind and every nation has the responsibility to avoid actions which can lead to the militarization of this arena,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

“We hope that countries which have in the past strongly condemned demonstration of similar capabilities by others will be prepared to work towards developing international instruments to prevent military threats relating to outer space,” it said, without mentioning India by name.

“Boasting of such capabilities is reminiscent of Don Quixote’s tilting against windmills,” it said, in a reference to the delusional hero of the 17th-century Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes.

no. I was just hearing experts on aljazeera news. He was saying that u can even use ur satellite to destroy other satellite. If i am not wrong then, ballistic missiles are also satellites.Just give them the right orbit at the right time.

You can use satellites to strike other satellites and USSR even made such satellites. But it is much simpler and quicker to launch ASAT missile Every non GEO satellite has to orbit the earth crossing different portions of it. So, keeping a missile ready for launch when the satellite is coming above head is better than making a satellite change orbits and hit some other distant satellite.

Ballistic missiles are not satellites as satellites must also have the ability to maneuver in orbit, have right equipments and so on. There is a reason why Iran has such difficulty in launching a satellite

Being an Indian I am more critical about Indians miserable performance last month. But this news has very high significance. One that am sure the authorities in Pakistan are well aware and preparing contingency plans for. And it has nothing to do with any armed conflict with Pakistan from space.

Pakistan WILL come up with a response. Pakistan has a policy of maintaining deterrence against India in all paradigms that have possible military applications. When India detonated the nuke, Pakistan followed with its own test within two weeks. When India announced its nuclear triad, Pakistan soon test fired its SLCM.

I agree this news is of great significance, we will see the Pakistani response to this and I predict Pakistan's interest in this field (piqued by these tests) to be demonstrated in the coming years.
