Pakistan Urges Afghanistan to Ally With Islamabad, Beijing

By MATTHEW ROSENBERG

Pakistan is lobbying Afghanistan's president against building a long-term strategic partnership with the U.S., urging him instead to look to Pakistan—and its Chinese ally—for help in striking a peace deal with the Taliban and rebuilding the economy, Afghan officials say.

The pitch was made at an April 16 meeting in Kabul by Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who bluntly told Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the Americans had failed them both, according to Afghans familiar with the meeting. Mr. Karzai should forget about allowing a long-term U.S. military presence in his country, Mr. Gilani said, according to the Afghans. Pakistan's bid to cut the U.S. out of Afghanistan's future is the clearest sign to date that, as the nearly 10-year war's endgame begins, tensions between Washington and Islamabad threaten to scuttle America's prospects of ending the conflict on its own terms.

if USA quits Afghanistan, its surely going to be perceived as a "defeat", and now giving space to China, and PAKistan and no India (USA's gardian angle in Afghanistan). I dont think so USA is left with much options in their international life. they are over stretched.

as for India is concern, their life in Afghanistan is limited to USA presence.

yes, I believe this too, she has no option but to linger on her stay. quiting Afghanistan means quiting international politics.

let me asure you until then every afghan will be part of the forces against the US not taliban. Its pushtoon mentality they just don't like foreign occupiers. So it will be better for the whole region including India that US leaves Afghanistan as soon as possible.

aint pakistan was one of the only 2 countries to have recognized talibs. At the same time it was known to pakistani establishment about the deeds of talibs which was turned a blind eye. Werent afghans screwed with that. Didnt pakistan interfered in affairs of other country at the time of afghan invasion. But then when the menace came to home you guys started crying foul. When the americans offered you guys became anti talibs for the world ditiching americans at one end afghans at other and and talibs on the third side.

And now you expect all the parties to trust your charcter.....

Many know that Haqqani is no angel. Pakistan for its selfish ends kept fiddling with Afghanistan politics for decades. You can deny it but Pakistan was clearly encouraging Afghan Taliban in its activities. Pakistan always believed that they could be the masters of the puppet show until it got too dangerous and the Taliban landed in their back yard after 9/11. A strategic depth policy turned into a major resource and energy sapper.

The last decade is clearly a decade lost in Pakistan's history. They have lost all the opportunities to develop and pullout the population from poverty. The growth rate is dwindling to a low and FDI has dried up.
