Pakistan urgently need more helicopters, for disaster relief

Pakistan flood death toll 'passes 1,000'

The number of people known to have been killed by floods in north-west Pakistan has passed 1,000, officials say.

About 30,000 troops have joined the relief effort, with large parts of the north-west submerged by the worst monsoon rains in memory.

There are also fears that with more rain forecast for the next 24 hours, some areas face further threats.

The main north-south motorway has partially reopened, raising the prospect of aid reaching those trapped.

Looks Pakistan's Katrina. I am quite sure not this many people would have died had this disaster hit Punjab. My heart felt condolences to all stuck by this grave tragedy.

helicopters, oh my God. After the shocking rains and fluds another system is coming to hit Pakistan. I think we need prayers please pray for us.

About 2 days ago, there were news strips running on Geo and Express, qouting US ambassador that 7 helicopters are providing assistance to flood affected areas. Today, US Counsel General was quoted in a news strip that 5 helicopters are taking part in relief operations.

I have been closely watching 3-4 news channels but failed to spot any Black Hawk or Chinnok (i still remember 2005 earthquake images), Can some one explain this? :undecided:

US pledges $10m in aid for flood-hit areas

ISLAMABAD: The United States is rushing helicopters, boats, bridges, water units and other supplies to flood-hit Pakistan as part of an initial 10 million dollars aid pledge.

"The Pakistani people are friends and partners, and the United States is standing with them as the tragic human toll mounts from flooding in northwest Pakistan," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement on Sunday.

More than 1100 people have been killed by monsoon rains, flash floods and landslides in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and at least another 47 have died in Pakistani-administered Kashmir, officials say.

More than 1.5 million people have been affected, with thousands of homes and vast areas of farmland destroyed in a region of Pakistan reeling from years of extremist bloodshed.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones or have been displaced from their homes -- and we are taking action to help," said Clinton. "Our embassy in Islamabad is coordinating closely with Pakistani authorities to support rescue and relief efforts.

"And we will work closely with the government of Pakistan to ensure aid reaches those people who need it most. I have seen first-hand the strength and resilience of the Pakistani people and I know they will come through this tragedy with determination and compassion."
