Pakistan to work with Iran on border issues: COAS​

KARACHI: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Asim Munir met Iran’s top military leaders on Saturday to discuss bilateral matters relating to defence and security cooperation and stressed that Pakistan was ready to solidify the ties and use the most suitable solutions to address security challenges and the presence and activities of terrorist elements at the border.

Gen Munir, who reached Iran on a two-day visit on Saturday with a high-ranking military delegation, met Iran’s top general, Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, in Tehran and discussed ways to improve bilateral interactions “to develop the level of cooperation in different fields, including defence, security, military and training”, Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported.

During the exchange, Mr Bagheri highlighted the “historical background of the two neighbouring countries as a basis for the expansion of bilateral relations and cooperation in various fields”, the report said.

He stressed the importance of developing military relations between Tehran and Islamabad, calling for increased training interactions and joint defence and security relations between the two countries at the regional level.

On his arrival in Tehran, Gen Munir was received by Maj Gen Abdolrahim Mousavi, the commander-in-chief of the Islamic Republic of Iran Army, Mehr said.

In the meeting, both sides discussed and examined avenues for an increase in bilateral interactions, strengthening of the security on shared borders and an increase in educational interactions and defence and security relations at the regional level.

‘Pakistan’s security our own security’

Gen Munir also met Major General Hossein Salami, the chief commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), who said Iran gave utmost importance to Pakistan’s security.

“We consider Pakistan’s security as our security and by expanding interactions, cooperation and joint actions, we will end the existence of terrorist groups and establish stable security in the shared border areas,” Gen Salami was quoted as saying by the Mehr News Agency.

The IRGC commander-in-chief said his forces were ready to turn the two countries’ borders into economic borders for economic and trade activities.

Gen Munir expressed his satisfaction with his visit to Iran and emphasised the importance of increasing defence and security interactions between the two countries.

Pakistan, Iran vow to eradicate terror through intel-sharing​

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Iran on Sunday agreed to further enhance cooperation and explore new ways to improve border security and deal with the "common threat" of terrorism following the two-day visit of army chief General Asim Munir to Tehran, the military said.

Gen Asim undertook a maiden trip to the neighbouring country as an army chief. He held talks with his Iranian counterpart and also met the civilian leadership including the Iranian president and foreign minister

Key issues including border security and terrorism were on top of the agenda.

A statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) termed the army chief’s visit as successful.

"During his visit, the COAS had detailed meetings with the military leadership of Iran including Chief of General Staff of Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri," according to the military's media wing.

Military commanders on both sides agreed that terrorism was a common threat to the region in general and both countries in particular.

They vowed to eradicate menace of terrorism in the border areas through intelligence sharing and effective actions against the terrorists' networks, and explore avenues for enhancing cooperation in security domain.

The COAS also called on President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahain.

During discussions significance of Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations for regional peace and stability was highlighted.

The COAS was presented with the Guard of Honour by a smartly turned out contingent of Iranian armed forces at the military headquarters on his arrival.

Pakistan and Iran ties have been in the past marred by trust deficit because of regional rivalry between Tehran and Riyadh.

But there has been a significant shift in geo political environment after China brokered a landmark rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

Since then the two regional powers have restored their diplomatic ties and agreed to other steps seeking improvement in their relationship.

Pakistan is the direct beneficiary of Iran-Saudi patch up as in the past Islamabad had to struggle to maintain a delicate balance.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have longstanding strategic partnership, which Iran viewed it with suspicion. But, with Iran and Saudi Arabia agreeing to bury the past, Pakistan sees it as a great opportunity to deepen not just security but economic cooperation with Iran.

Recently Pakistan agreed to barter trade with Iran and other regional countries to offset the impact of western sanctions on Tehran.

China is instrumental in bringing the shift as it is using its leverage to bring Iran and Pakistan close.

Iranian president calls for expediting implementation of agreements with Pakistan

President Raisi made the demand during a meeting with the Pakistani military chief who has visited Tehran for talks with Iranian officials.

The Iranian president also underlined Iran’s policy to turn the Iran-Pakistan border into a safe one, saying this goal can be achieved through expanding border markets and energy cooperation between the two sides.

The president said the boosting of trade ties with Pakistan will result in boosting political relations between the two neighbors.

The commander of the Pakistani army for his part spoke about security cooperation between Tehran and Islamabad.

General Seyed Asim Munirs said the two sides have reached good agreements to boost security along their border, adding that Pakistani has focused its efforts on accelerating measures that are underway to beef up lasting security.

The top Pakistani military official also hailed Iran’s policy to strengthen relations with neighbors including Pakistan, calling this a highly valuable opportunity for the Muslim world.

can someone please tell our army generals not to wear caps indoors? it is sign of bad manners and looks like these guys were not taught the basic manners during schooling. In my dad's generation, you would not be caught dead wearing a cap indoors. Even the Iranians dont wear it and they must be wondering why these generals have hats on. I noticed only Pak Army generals do this. I have not seen PAF and PN senior officers do this
