Pakistan to upgrade the constitutional status of its northern Gilgit-Baltistan region

GB is indeed critical and becoming must for Pakistan. If this is called a wrong absorption then an independent referendum is could be held so people themselves will decide. Pakistan pursued in past and the same point was raised by Pakistan for Kashmir conflict as let the people decide independently. Indian claims for territory couldn't be considered alone for the rights of people though there are rebuttals and highlighted on Int'l forums even by the Kashmiri's themselves which is a strong case. A good news after all however a little late but better than never.

About time! Heaven Gilgit Baltistan along with Balochistan are Pakistan's main arteries. Time to fully invest all out effort in developing Pakistan!

I as an Indian support this move. Come on Pakistan please do it.

we need to understand the pros and cons of the situation. We have deprived gilgit baltistan of their constitutional rights for 68 years bcz of Kashmir and 68 years later how close is Kashmir issue towards being solved. The UN doesn't care and india is not willing to listen while the super power couldn't care less even if it tried. In such an environment what we have to consider that is it the right thing to continuously throw down people of such a large area under the bus.

We bleed for Kashmir and fight for Kashmir and always will till they get their rightful representation but we also hav a responsibility towards gilgit baltistan who joined with us in hopes of a better future. Do we not owe them this? Is it not our responsibility? We are stuck between a rock and a hard place but the pros outweigh the con.

They are patriotic people but everything has a limit. Everyone has a limit. The glass can get full. What if we deprive them of their rights for so long that they actually contemplate independence and we are then fighting our own people AGAIN!!!.

It weakens our cause but it provides loyal Pakistanis with much deserved rights and representations. Sometimes as nations we have to make hard decisions but we have to make right decision and providing our people with rights and constitutional representation is the right call. Its been a long road but we cant delay this anymore. We will have to fight for Kashmir even more vigorously in the international forums and community.

@WAJsal All this should have happened a long time ago.kudos
Agreed! Have given explanation, it will not hurt our Kashmiri cause, instead will strengthen it.
By taking away this special status we are giving a green signal to India to make loc international border and fully revoke special status of occupied kashmir
Kashmir is a disputed territory. India says it is not, we say it is, if we now say it is ours and not disputed it will mean that we have effectively rejected the disputed argument and we should therefore make the LoC a international border.
You are acting like an insecure child, please read the article properly. To all those who oppose it, note: GB is not getting a special status, it is only getting proper constitutional status and representation in NA:
"In addition to being named in the constitution, Gilgit-Baltistan would also send two lawmakers to sit in the federal parliament — though they would be given observer status only."

GB will not get a provincial status, which should have been the case. We have been associated with a conflict we aren't a part of! Either the article is too hard to understand or you guys are happy with treating GB as some colony. There will not be a provincial assembly or etc, etc. This will end the sense of deprivation in the area and will not hurt our Kashmiri cause in anyway. How can anyone oppose this move, you guys are acting like retards, literally.
By taking away this special status
Have you actually read the article? nowhere does it say GB is getting a provincial status, the legislative assembly will stay. Kindly do me a favor and read the OP.
It weakens our cause but it provides loyal Pakistanis with much deserved rights and representations.
Read the OP again, GB is not getting provincial status, the legislative assembly will stay. The system will be more autonomous and representation in NA, with basic constitutional rights. How will this hurt our cause in anyway? Don't be fooled by stupid arguments here!

I think it is acceptance of the emerging realities of the times we live in now. The issue of LOC being made into a permanent boundary with relaxation of travel regulations over the period of time with improvements in security environment was the foundation even of the expected accord between Vajpayee-Manmohan and Musharraf plan. There is a greater need for integration in south asia as economic progress and development are the requirements of the time lest the world surpasses us by centuries instead of a few generations now. The elevation of Gilgit Baltistan's status will also signal a tacit acceptance of the above mentioned plans. A good move, at least in my opinion, as it will give the political space to either side to accept LOC as a permanent boundary and work on the next phase .. i.e. ease of travel restrictions and closer economic cooperation not only between the two regions of Kashmir but also between the nations too. This is the only issue which has been a persistent pain in the bilateral relations.

For those who are espousing Kashmiri cause, my only submission is that this is a better route for the overall development of Kashmir rather than the strife which is being perpetuated. So, let the emotions be kept on the backburner for once and pragmatism rule the roost.

Great news. The people of GB are patriots and have showed their mettle in the Kargil War. Lightly Armed Northern Light Infantry of 2,800 troops forced India to deploy 96,000 Troops. Lalak Jan earned the Nishan-e-Haider to be the first one from the region. I welcome the people of GB formally as part of Pakistan. Long Live Pakistan.
