ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will sign a deal next month to import gas shipments from Qatar for the next 15 years, a top Pakistani energy official said Wednesday, an agreement that should help tackle Pakistan's chronic gas shortages.

The flexible contract will allow Pakistan to import between 200 and 400 million standard cubic feet per day (mmcfd), said Mobin Saulat, head of state-run Inter State Gas systems, which oversees the pipelines.

He would not comment on the price, but said it was "very competitive".

"It's finalised and there's just a couple of formalities. We should be able to sign it in August," he said.

Pakistan currently faces a gas shortage of around 2,000 mmcfd per day.

Pakistan has imported seven spot cargos of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Qatar since the completion of an LNG terminal in the southern port city of Karachi in April, said Saulat.

"It's fully operational," he sai ..

Pakistan badly need gas to meet its growing energy demand. The gas crisis are as severe as the electricity and I am quite positive that even if we consume all the electricity coming out of Iran-Pakistan, Tajikistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan and Qatar-Pakistan projects, our growing energy demand will ask for more.

Even if all that power were available, how will we be able to distribute it theft-free and bill for it to pay for its costs?

these days all of the major feeder points are monitored for theft.

No (or minimum theft) on a feeder means there will be very little loadshedding in that area.

for those feeders where major theft occurs, they get major load shedding

So it is tough, very tough these days to steal electricity and not suffer consequence.

Looking forward, one should work on "pre-pay" via mobile phone.
So you pay and get electricity. When you don't, then no electricity

"Kunda" or illegal hooks could still be around but that would be taken care of using the collective punishment for the given area.

Very tough? Pakistani grid system losses of over a third are among the highest in the world due to theft despite all these measures, with the connivance of the staff themselves. Please tell it to these guys:

We need to move the electrical wires underground , under 5 feet of concrete

By the way with the Iran Gas arrive by next year , we may not need the Qater Gas anyways should have waited to negotiate lower rates after we got cheap Iranian gas

Congrats to Pakistanis

I agree with you, this problem exist in India where state discoms don't have enough money to buy power due to people stealing electricity & not paying tgier bills

Here in KPK (PESCO) all those areas with theft and losses more than 70 %, electricity has been disconnected for quite some time now... Area with losses more than 30 % and Less than 70 % have to bear 12-14 hours of loadshedding and also losses are added to their billing... while Area with full recovery of dues, the line losses which accounts to less than 30 %, losses are added to the consumer billing but zero loadshedding...A good planning for short term....But on longer run much more needs to be done..

This deal can only last for only 2 years as PAK-IRAN Oil and Gas pipeline is much better as it would supply Oil and Gas to India and China as well from which Pakistan would be gaining an annual fee too :pakistan:
