I have been saying it that IP is a dead horse, TAPI is the only feasible alternative because
1-After India dropping out, the costs of IP has increased to such an extent that TAPI despite all its risks, is more economical than less risky IP.
2-The financial arrangements with Iran are frozen because of financial sanctions on Iran. Pakistan can't trade with Iran other than barter settlement. Plus no bank (even Pakistani) is willing to fund the government over the infrastructure due to fears of being blacklisted by US and UN.
3-The quantum of settlement expected from operational IP pipeline is not possible via barter.
4-Iran being in financial crunch is also not able to help Pakistan developing infrastructure on her side partly also because Pakistan cannot officially make monetary transaction with Iran .
So only thing keeping IP alive these days is political chatter. This project is not possible until US and UN remove their financial sanctions on Iran.

That is a fair comment. Pakistan can and should make a better case for a waiver based on its dire energy situation that hampers economic progress to the point of triggering widespread unrest, or seek alternative solutions in lieu.

India and China both got exemptions from the International sanctions on Iran which is why both countries continued to purchase Oil from Iran( though ensuring that oil imports did not increase, increases in demand were met from KSA).

The only difficulty India faced was in paying Iran as no interntaional merchant was willing to transfer money to Iran(China did not have this problem as China operates its own clearance merchant, we saw this and have now started our own as well). But a work around was found for that and our trade has continued with Iran.

Essentially this means that any in the GoP who are citing sanctions as the reason for non-compliance of the Pakistani-Iranian contract are lying through their teeth.

It is not a matter of the current regime. Even IK or a military government, or any other government in power in Pakistan, would have to comply with the sanctions just the same as this government, or seek a waiver from them, like you said earlier.

Iran has become isolated globally further because of immature comments of Ahmedi Nejad and co, Pakistan heavily depends upon export incentives provided by EU and US on its textile exports it will be very difficult for Pakistan untill Iran try to reconcile itself with west with some sane and rational diplomatic behavior.

The point that had Pakistan wanted/used its leverage with US on this, it could have gotten a waiver just like India and China did.

The main impediment in this project is KSA, not sanctions. They do not want you to move forward on this and your Prime Minister is loath to deny Saudis.

There is no leverage needed in getting a waiver from the sanctions, only to follow the requirements in showing that the transaction or project is not increasing trade and similar stipulations showing how future transactions will decrease etc.

Saudi Arabia has no role in these sanctions affecting this project.
