Pakistan to set up first mega nuclear power plant: Ahsan Iqbal

To give you a perspective of the cost involved, take the recent MOU signed between BD and Russia. The project cost is around 13.5 billion dollars for one 2500 MW plant. BD share is about one billion out of it and the rest is being financed by Russia. It will be operational by 2022 that is about 6 years away if everything goes smooth with the establishment and political change. With the price of coal, fuel and solar coming down nuclear will be become a rarity in future. Cost of disposing the nuclear waste is also expensive with added radiation issues.

Sounds like BD made the wrong deal than.

Like I said, many developed nations are generating nuclear energy quite cheaply and efficiently. It is certainly possible.

In BD's case they have ignored nuclear options for power generation until now. So, they want to make up for lost time with a bang. It looks costly but considering that Russia is financing the whole project and also servicing it for the life of the project then the price looks ok. I think Russia is also supplying the fuel and also took up the task of disposing of the nuclear waste. For BD with no background in nuclear power generation, this is heaven sent. You guys can get a better bargain because of your manpower and experience in this field.

It is highly variable dependent on loan arrangement + specific local industrial capacity+offset, soil mechanics, land prices etc.

Have you looked at how much B'desh is forking out for theirs for example? Almost 13 billion USD for just 2400 MW last I heard....gaining both funding and material from Russia (down to last bolt I would imagine).

Does anyone know the exact cost of this specific 2000 MW project in Pakistan. It will be interesting to see how it stacks compared to global norm like you are quoting/projecting.

The Cost of Nuclear Power Plants that are Under construction in Karachi is $6.5 Billion and it's not 2000 MW but 2200 MW each one is 1100 MW

this is the design

Ok Got New Info About the Nuclear Power Plant....

2 Are under Construction in Karachi 1100 MW each.... will be completed in 2020
1 is Under Construction in Chashma CHASNUPP V whihc will produce 1000 MW will be completed in 2020

Nuclear reactors which Ahsan Iqbal is Talking about is in Muzaffargarh
PAEC reportedly plans to install three Chinese nuclear reactors at Muzaffargarh and the site is now being prepared

Thanks bro, you are paying about half of what Bangladesh is for similar MW size. So good for Pakistan.

Do you have any details on the reactor design Chinese are providing? Is it their CPR-1000 export model?

Any offset production/manufacturing of components/provision of fuel pellets from Pakistan?

So the 1000 MW initial production will be ramped up to 1100 MW eventually? Or we talking about 3 separate reactors here?

the picture said ACP-1000 the each reactor will produce 1100 MW

the 2 under construction in Karachi will produce 2200 MW
Chashma one will create 1000 MW
and the planned in Muzaffargarh will produce 2000 as stated by Ahsan Iqbal but there will be 3 so 3000 MW you can say

So we are talking about 3 separate overall sites then? Karachi, Chasma (near Mianwali) and Muzzaffargarh (near Multan)?

Karachi will be 2 X 1100 MW

Muzaffargarh will be 2 x 1000 MW (and eventually 3 x 1000 MW)

Chasma will be 1 x 1000 MW.

These numbers are correct?

Do we have timelines as to when this will all be completed? Are all of them Chinese reactor designs + supported by Chinese loans?

You gave the cost for Karachi to be 6.5 billion. Do you have cost of the other 2 projects?

Thanks for the great info so far. I did not know about the grand scale Pakistan is going for in nuclear power in coming years!
