A mega nuclear power plant is to be set up in Pakistan, the first in the country’s history, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said on Tuesday.

“It will be the first time in the history of the country that a mega nuclear power plant would be set up with power generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts,” the minister said in an interview, according to Radio Pakistan.

July-May: Rs48b spent on Karachi’s nuclear power plants

Iqbal added that Thar is enriched with natural coal deposits and the government is committed to utilising the resources for producing electricity, to overcome the power shortage in the country.

“Super critical technology will be used in the coal power plant, which will be established with the financing of the Asian Development Bank in Jamshoro to ensure a safe environment,” he added.

Despite many difficulties, Pakistan has steadily continued its nuclear energy programme.

Nuclear power plants: ‘Production to be raised to 40,000MW by 2050’

Towards the end of last year, a report by a top US think tank predicted that Pakistan could turn into the fifth largest nuclear weapons state in the world by 2025.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has also vowed to bring an end to the country-wide issue of load-shedding during the tenure of his government.

We can't have enough nuclear reactors. This the future. Need to invest in such mega energy projects which is need of the hour.

Is Pakistan constructing its own or Chinese are doing it?

Is he talking about the one that's under construction in Karachi by Chinese?? or another Power plant??

Which power plant buddy?
We are already having trouble in signing agreements of civil nuclear energy...... so how are we going to work it out?

Then share with me :undecided:............... how Radioactive waste is disposed off or converted into non lethal waste............?

plz don't say things like ............... we dump it in soil, or seal it in alloy containers and dispose in sea bed etc etc :D

LOL i was going to say that :D :D

They dump it deep underground inside contained enclosures or it is used for things like Depleted Uranium rounds.

What a bunch of idiots, zero to none, long-term thinking. Diamer- Bhasha (4500 MW) or Kalabagh (3600 MW) will produce clean and risk free energy for generations to come, not to mention will cost less than 2200 MW nuclear reactor.

Diamer-Basha already under so is Dasu... Karot, Suki Kinari, Neelum Jehlum etc etc

Well this is not proper way of disposal......
I am against Nuclear power energy for this reason that their is no effective way of neutralizing its waste.... and it's waste material is most injurious to health and eco system as compared to other energy wastes.....

Nuclear power plants can become big trouble in case of war...... upon targeting them..... some crazy side reactions can take place..... or if not so , then it's waste or leakage material is too Damn dangerous.......

I believe we should utilize hydro power instead..... but sadly it involve some political reasoning...... :(
