Pakistan to pay $11.6m in compensation to Chinese families

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has approved compensations for the families of the Chinese workers killed and wounded in the Dasu dam attack in July 2021.


















The ECC on Friday met under Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin and approved an amount of $11.6 million to be given to the families of the Chinese workers who came under a terror attack on July 14.

According to the reports at the time that attack left 12 people including 9 Chinese worker dead. Another Chinese national died later while a total of 26 Chinese workers were injured.

China temporarily stopped work on the Dasu Dam project.

Pakistan earlier this week decided to compensate the families of the 36 Chinese nationals, aiming to remove a major irritant in bilateral relations.

The Dasu Hydropower Project is funded by the World Bank and does not fall in the scope of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The ECC also decided to abolish regulatory duty of 45% on the import of Pine nuts (chilgoza) from Afghanistan.

The meeting has made a key decision of approving trade of some items between Pakistan and Afghanistan in local currency.




The committee also decided to take third party assistance to monitor Kamyab Jawan program and approved a grant of Rs4 billion to the FBR too.

The approval of Rs5 billion to conduct census was also included on the agenda.

Good step! Pakistan must own and ensure security of its citizens and visitors. Given history of terrorist attacks in our country, our security should have evolved to be top notch. But unfortunately its still pathetic. Enemy can strike at wish and will at any given point & time. Their operations might not be overt like before but they still have a 100% covert operational capability. Pakistan needs to fix its police and judicial system ASAP, urgent basis. Already we are loosing a generation to terror and low economic related problems. People are moving out of country fast, and the ones left behind are scum of the earth kinds. I think the political, military and police resolve just does not exist. It seems that the people on top are fine with a few deaths here and there. Because masses forget quick enough. They only care if the numbers become to large to forget.

Not really, we have inturn oblitrated both our northern and western enemy enough times.
But you can't ignore the fact that your leadership has historically not cared for the human capital in your country, that's a fact.

The money should have been extracted from the people whose job was to provide protection to Chinese engineers. State of Pakistan is rarely in learning mode and most of the times is sleeping. Imagine how cheap was it for our enemy to make a dent to our financial sources and our image.

We don't have a set standard for that. Generally CMs can decide based on their own assumptions.

Because they are so corrupt, they fear that if they have to fight the indian terrorists or if they have to take a direct action against india, it will take away their DHA plots, houses and all the corrupt money they have here and overseas. They do not want to complicate their Luxurious life by inciting a Panga with india. Like cheap dirt bags, they want to compromise. It is cheap for them to let ordinary people die daily, whereas they continue on with their chauffeur driven cars and their police escorts. Even a terror attack on their own kids where terrorists butchered their kids in public, was not enough for these cowards to attack India.

In short, the Chinese govt will compensate the deceased for 20 years' income and funeral expenses.
According to the standards of the Chinese govt, the families of these dead people should receive compensation of RMB 4-5 million (US $600k-800k) per person. At first, I expected that the families of 10 dead people should receive compensation of US $6 million to US $8 million.
10 people were dead and 26 injured. $11.6 million. The amount of compensation is higher than I expected. The reason may be that there are high paid senior technicians among the dead or many of the injured were disabled.

Well looks like the "Iron Brother" is showing its real face. For the rag tag Government of Pakistan to pay this so called compensation means that there is high Probability that the Chinese Government threatened Pakistan Government and forced them to pay compensation.

It now seems on surface as if it was a terrible idea for Pakistan to join BRI. Pakistan should have let the US surround China, it was none of Pakistan's business to get involve in all this mess. I say it is still not too late for Pakistan to change it course and make some strategic deal with the US.

There's a saying in our part of the world, roughly translated.... Rather than habitually ranting out of tune, it's better to keep your trap shut.!!!
Once there was an attempted terrorist attack on Chinese Consulate in which two Pakistani policemen on duty were killed.... Common Chinese folks back in China were so overwhelmed by the police men's sacrifice that they personally did a collection as an award /compensation for them.... Similarly the business community of Sialkot collected over 100000 Dollars for the deceased Sri Lankan National and his next of kin to receive his pension.
Paying a compensation is not a penalty but a way of showing gratitude.

China will certainly compensate the families of the deceased, and the compensation figures have long been stipulated. The only difference is whether the money is paid by the Chinese govt or the Pakistani govt.
This money is nothing to the Chinese govt. But I don't know if you can understand that if the Chinese govt pays for it, no Chinese workers will believe that the Pakistani govt will protect their safety, and no Chinese enterprises will believe that the Pakistani govt will protect their interests.
Let me give you an example. If your colleague is shot by a gangster in a police area, but the policeman is not affected. Will you still believe that the policeman is willing to protect you? Or will you choose to pay protection fees to the gangs or resign? You know that your life will not affect the interests of this policeman.
China is a country with an accountability system. The Chinese only believe in the binding of interests and responsibilities, not verbal commitments.
