Pakistan to buy only 18 F-16s -DAWN - Top Stories; April 23, 2008

Dawn News

By Our Correspondent WASHINGTON, April 22: Pakistan has decided to halve the number of F-16 fighter jets it’s buying from the United States due to financial constraints, according to some diplomatic sources.

Pakistan had earlier agreed to buy 36 of these aircraft at a total cost of $5.1 billion, which included associated weapons, spares and upgrading of an earlier fleet purchased in the 1980s.

The proposed fleet of 36 new F-16 Block 50/52 planes was to cost Pakistan $3 billion while it was required to pay additional $650 million for weapons.

The decision to reduce the order by half would also halve the cost of buying new F-16s and that of the weapons associated with them.

Pakistan, however, will still have to spend $1.3 billion on mid-life update and modification of the F-16A/B aircraft purchased earlier. Engine modifications and purchasing some new equipment for the old fleet will cost Pakistan additional $151 million. The sources said the new aircraft will be fully equipped with weapons and facilities that come with an F-16 Block 50/52 aircraft. The planes will be capable of carrying nuclear and non-nuclear weapons.

The United States will, however, have the right to conduct frequent inspections and inventory checking.

“The media stories that new aircraft will not have the facility to carry a nuclear weapon do not make sense,” said a defence expert. He pointed out that the French Mirage aircraft now with PAF did not have such facilities when purchased. Pakistanis, however, modified the aircraft to make them nuclear capable.

Pakistan’s request for new planes and for the modification for its earlier fleet was put on hold after the October 2005 earthquake.

bhagtay chor ki langoti he saheeeeeeeee.....!!!!!!!!

. .
36 for 5.1bn$???? that's equivalent to ~150mn$ per craft..

this 36 x jets deal is over....but tht deal included "associated weapons, spares and upgrading of an earlier fleet purchased in the 1980s."
so probably tht was the reason tht price of each jet was totaling to such a huge amount.....

This is the first casualty. This could be an austerity measure or simply because new regime wants to undo every thing. However, if you see that instead planes from some other country will be purchased; definitely Mr 10% is upto his old tricks.

.
its a good news that we are buying less new F-16 block 52 plus, the MLU will be brought to 90% of the tech available in new F-16s with 10 times the less cost.
Austria just paid 2.1$ billion for 15 EF-2000 which includes spare parts, weapons, training, etc while PAF is acquiring 18 less capable aircraft for over 3 $billion?

well dude to b precise...they would have cost us $ 83333333 (about 84 milliaon a piece) normally F-16A/B cost $14.6 million and F-16C/D $18.8 million acording to 1998 estimate.....

Block 50/52 are equipped with improved GPS/INS. The aircraft can carry a further batch of advanced missiles; the AGM-88 HARM missile, JDAM, JSOW and WCMD. Block 50 aircraft are powered by the F110-GE-129 while the Block 52 jets use the F100-PW-229.From Block 52 onwards, the cockpit also uses the Boeing Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System (JHMCS).

mind it GE = Gen elect...and PW= Pritt & Whitny... engines

they the most bamboo type f-16s... n i knw tht they r expensive as compared to A/B, C/Ds...but still i am not sure tht were they supposed to b so expensive....
waiting for ur input...

guys i know one thing that PAF only ordered 18 f-16's it had a further option of 18 f-16's which it could exercise, but now we come to a point where PAF is only buyin 18 forget the rest, I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND THIS!!!!!!!

this is real bullshit, one day our dear government will say we have no need of buyin expensive jets cause they don't feel threatned by india!!!!!!

i don't like this new government, it has already started eatin money, we have money but they want to take n run with all our country's money, we can see that by the cut in the number of f-16s, with an excuse of FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS, really guys i would say one thing:

"People say we gained independance in 1947, I think the people of Pakistan are still not independant of our corrupt politicians!!!"

we need modern jets, r they goin to look for somethin that will completely replace f-16 in PAF in the future??????? like EF, rafale, or somethin else, may be they don't want to rely that much on US then, but we should have some US jets cause they set the standards in the modern fighter era

but im very surprised by their decision i was 100% sure that they would exercise the option of the rest 18 f-16's possiblly with an AESA radar

guys wut do u think???????:undecided:

Well it looks like that Mr. 10% is back in action and of course he cannot get his 10% out of a done deal, maybe thats why they are revising so that when they re negotiate they get the 10%...now this is any assumption but in reality this govt. have already announced that they will reduce the defence budget and this is just the beginning. Congrats to all those illeterate Pakistanis which are unfortunately in majority who brought them back to power.

Is there any other source of this news apart from Dawn. According to defenseindustrydaily.com April 21, 2008 report the deal is going through. Defense purchases are not easy to reverse because it takes a lot of time before a deal is finalized. We should wait till further sources confirm this.

I tend to agree with Ejaz. The source is some dubious unknown experts. It may be that the Government is trying to show its austerity measures, and they may have put a hold to further buying for the moment. The only other thing that comes to mind is that eitherJF17 has been more successful than earlier imagined or J10 now fulfils PAFs expectations. It may also be a preparation for change in US government as these deals may yet come under the microscope. Ithink we should wait and see how the situation evolves. One thing is for sure . InshaAllah, PAF will get the 18 F16s thatit has on order hopefully before the change over.

There is another thread discussing the same. Mods can we merge the 2 threads and continue discussion.

Why every decision made by the previous government has to be reserved by the new one? Why certain things can be left the way they are. First of all we dont have the privilege to get them whenever we require them. If today we do have the option to buy these jets, then we should avail them, otherwise with the integration of new jets into the IAF, we will be left so behind that it would be virtually impossible to catch them up at that stage and 18 imo is not a sufficent number for these new breed of the F-16s for pakistan.
