MIRANSHAH: A foreign news agency has claimed that Pakistani Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud has been killed in a US drone strike in North Waziristan.

MIRANSHAH: Pakistani Taliban Chief Hakimullah Mehsud was killed in a US drone strike in North Waziristan Agency, security sources confirmed on Friday. Tariq Mehsud a close aide of the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) chief was also among the six killed.

The Associated Press reported that a senior US official confirmed the strike overnight, saying the US received positive confirmation Friday morning that Hakimullah Mehsud had been killed.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said there was no confirmation of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief being killed in the drone strike.

The TTP have also neither confirmed nor denied if Hakimullah was killed in the drone strike.

According to reports, the drone strike targeted a compound of the TTP in Danday Dara Khel near Miranshah.

Shortly after the attack, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan termed the attack an attempt to sabotage the government's plan to hold talks with the Taliban.

The Pakistani Taliban have also been demanding from the government to get the US drone strikes stopped before talks.

This was the second drone attack since Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's visit to the United States, where he demanded US President Barack Obama to stop the attacks. Pakistan has long been opposing CIA-operated drone attacks in the tribal region dubbing them as violation if it’s territorial integrity.

In the past there have been several reports of Hakimullah Mehsud being killed. He took over the TTP from Baitullah Mehsud who was killed in a US drone strike in 2009.

Strike targets Pakistan Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud's car
A drone strike targeting a vehicle used by Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud has killed five people, intelligence sources say.

Four missiles were fired on the vehicle in the Dande Darpa Khel area of North Waziristan. Two of Mehsud's bodyguards were reportedly among the dead.

Mehsud has a $5m FBI bounty on his head and is thought to be responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.

Pakistan's PM Nawaz Sharif has urged US President Obama to halt drone strikes.

The attacks by unmanned US aircraft have been a critical source of tension in the relationship between the countries and came up amid wide-ranging talks between the two leaders in Washington last week.

They are also deeply unpopular with the Pakistani public, and Pakistan has consistently stated that they violate its sovereignty.

Last week an American newspaper said it had obtained secret US documents revealing that senior Pakistani government officials have for years known of and endorsed CIA drone strikes.

Drone strike kills 5 in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH: A fresh drone strike that has reportedly targeted a compound in the use of Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) commander Hakimullah Mehsud, has killed five people and injured two in North Waziristan on Friday, Express News reported.
The strike targeted a house in Dandey Darpakhel, five kilometres (three miles) north of Miranshah, a town that US considers to be a stronghold of Taliban and al Qaeda militants.

The identities of those killed in the strike are not yet known, but sources say a senior militant commander may be among the dead.

This is the second drone attack in two days, after Thursday’s strike killed three people in Miranshah bazaar.

The attack comes against the backdrop of a political scenario rife with fresh tensions and controversies over the Pakistani state’s role in these US attacks.

A strike in the midst of ‘dialogue process’

On Wednesday, a week after Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had urged his US counterpart to halt drone strikes, US Congressman Alan Grayson had said that if Pakistan wanted, drone strikes “could end tomorrow” and that “these strikes would not be possible if Pakistan did not facilitate them.”

Then hours after Thursday’s drone attack, an agitated Imran Khan had stated that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would put a stop to NATO supplies if a drone attack is conducted during the Taliban peace talks.

Also on Thursday, the Pakistani government announced that the dialogue process with the Taliban had begun, although no formal talks had occurred as yet.

“We expect that the formal dialogue with Taliban will also take place very soon,” Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar told opposition parties.

The Pakistani defence ministry recently said that 317 US drone strikes in the country’s tribal areas had killed 67 civilians and 2,160 militants in Pakistan since 2008, figures that opposition parties in the parliament are highly skeptical of.

wow seems Drone operators are celebrating Diwali even 2 days before. Good news if true. I am sure many Pakistanis who are against 'Drone attacks' to their country would change their views after this provided news is true. Drones did what Pakistan's armed forces didn't do in last 10 years.
PS: so drone operators will get $5 Million??

I'll wait for official confirmation. Plenty of news regarding his death had shown up before as well.

#Hakimullah Mehsud may have been killed in this drone strike. This will be a very positive step if true. #TTP chief Hakimullah Mehsud and along with his predecessor Baitullah Mehsud was responsible for the deaths of 40000+ Pakistanis. This, Hakimullah Mehsuds killing is a great development if true.

But instead of a foreign country's drone strike this man should have been eliminated by us #Pakistanis. We should have been the ones who eliminated the TTP. We need to crush the TTP.

Also this will make the army look very stupid because this is the second taliban chief who has been eliminated by drone strikes. Perhaps the drone strike was designed to sabotage peace talks and make the army look stupid and incompetent but it still eliminated big fish.

Hakimullah Mehsud was wanted by us. We should have eliminated him but even if not atleast they eliminated the son of a bitch who killed 40,000 Pakistani citizens
