Taleban militants fighting the Pakistan army in the country's tribal areas say they are willing to hold unconditional talks with the government.
Maulvi Omar, a spokesman for the militants, said they were also willing to lay down their arms if the military ceased operations against them.
The army is conducting operations against militants in the tribal region of Bajaur and the Swat valley.
The operations are said to be a serious effort to eradicate the Taleban.
The army wants them and al-Qaeda to be removed from Pakistan's tribal regions next to the Afghan border.
'No foreigners'
"We are willing to negotiate with the government without any conditions," Maulvi Omar told the BBC Urdu service on Wednesday "We are also willing to lay down our arms, once the military ceases operations against us."
Pakistan's government has said that it is willing to talk to the militants once they lay down their arms.
But it has also said it will not tolerate the presence of any foreigners in the region.Maulvi Omar said that the local Taleban did not want foreign militants in the region and would help the government to remove them.
"We can set up a shura [elders] committee to liaise with the authorities in removing such people," he said.
Maulvi Omar said it was useless to debate the security situation in parliament without taking the Taleban into confidence.
"What is the use of discussing the situation without talking to us?" he asked.
Claims
Pakistan's military says it has killed and captured hundreds of militants in recent fighting in Bajaur and Swat.
The military also says that it has destroyed fortified encampments and training facilities of the militants in Bajaur.
But locals point out that this is mainly a series of exaggerated claims made by the military.
They say the militants never fight in regular positions, or behind fortifications, in Pakistan or Afghanistan.
The tribesmen also say that claims that dozens of militants have recently been killed are also exaggerated.
Local journalists say that many of the places where the military claimed to have killed the insurgents were abandoned weeks before any attack.
They also say that there is a big discrepancy between the number of bodies recovered and buried and the numbers of militants the military claim to have killed

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY SAID THE LAST 3 TIMES, I CANT BELIEVE ANYONE IS TAKING THIS SERIOUSLY AGAIN !!!!

Although I have faith in the ability of the Pakistan Army this news of exaggerated claims is cause for concern.

Have the main bulk of the militants vanished into the hills in a tactical retreat leaving a vanguard to cover them?

If so they will be back and it seems asking for negotiations is there attempt to buy time to do this.

So while the US, NATO and Afghan government all have realized that they cannot move forward without including the taliban, we on the other hand are going for the very opposite. How interesting:tsk:

Ice cold, TTP have no association with Afghan Talibans.
They are only here to kill key personals and destabalize Pakistan.
You must have known by now that their dictation come from indian embassies in Afghanistan and they get shelter in Afghanistan.
They are criminals they must present themself to face their charges.
They should also clarify, what are their demands?

Dear Batman, we should not forgive them before they make explanation for their various claims of terroism inside Pakistan!
At least they should be forced to explain, who supplied them RDX for marriot bombing!

Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me, but if they are really serious this time  then they should lay down their arms, handover all foreign terrorists and stop cross border attacks in Afghanistan.

Second Editorial: Taliban ready to give up arms?

One hopes that Maulvi Umar of the Tehreek-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP) knows how credible he sounds when he says that the Taliban are ready to lay down arms. He says: “We are sensible people and understand the survival and integrity of our country. If the government relinquishes use of power, we are also ready to stop our actions and hold talks with the government”. He also says that the Taliban will help capture the “foreigners” after the Pakistan army has gone home.

After threatening Pakistan from the Tribal Areas down to Karachi and causing hundreds of people to die in suicide-bombings, this is hardly credible. In fact it sounds tongue-in-cheek to derail the debate going on in the parliament in Islamabad. What if the Pakistan Army told him: “relinquish arms and separate the terrorists from the peaceful population before we can talk peace”, what would be his reply? As things stand now, Maulvi Umar is probably buying time for the next onslaught and is mocking the lack of unity in the national politics of the country. *

I never said we need to negotiate with the TTP. My point is that we need to differentiate between these fake talibans with the real ones and fakes ones should be eliminated while get into negotiations with the real ones so that others dont take advantage of the situation which Karzai seems to be taking off at the moment with the backing of the US.

Continue diplomacy is ok................but there wud no end result...........as its look whole strategical drama staged by uncle sam to cover their failure. Now they are in manipulation phase and working on sevral options to get least to justify their actions & stay in the region...........so they may now divert their whole attentions to workout insurgencies in Pakistan especially in FATA as one of their anti Pakistan agenda.

By the way....How did US took such U turn while they strictly opposed and even sabotages the talks by their air-striks when Pakistani were took place such talks and blamed Pakistan to support Talibaan............so if pakistan being their close partner, take the same philosophy for talks in following of American's recent views ..........then its wud be a big question mark that what ever Talibaab doing its all under total support of USA with coordination of Saudia...........its is serious concerns as these US friends did heavy losses to Pakistan by killing thousands of innocent civillians....property too.

There is another question arisen that.........if the NS, Saudis Knows and ultimately contacted and meet so called Talibaan leaders.............its shows that they wre already in contact .............then why the americans in search of and to whom??????
Why did not they get them to hang, with the help of Saudis????
Its all nothng more then a conspiral Bullshit against Pakistan.

I completely agree with you. These charlatans have been fooling us for years. Enough is enough.

May I ask who are those real Talibans?
