KARACHI: Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Karachi Kings, in their send-off event at Naya Nazimabad, expressed the hope of entering the finals of the third edition of the tournament.

Karachi Kings captain Imad Wasim said team will try to put smiles on the fans of the franchise by winning the title.

“We are going to the UAE keeping in mind that we have to win the title by performing in the third edition of the PSL. In the last two seasons we were not able to make Karachi fans happy, but this time we will come to Karachi for the final and win it,” said Imad. “You all just pray for us and leave the rest to us, we will not disappoint you this time.”

Right-handed opener Babar Azam said Kings look in shape courtesy a good mix of players. “We will try to give our best and make it into the final,” he said.

Meanwhile, the first international PSL player to come to Karachi, England all-rounder Ravi Bopara said: “The way I was welcomed by everyone in Karachi was incredible. I just want you all to keep supporting your team. We have a wonderful team and we will win.”

“We did have a good team in previous editions but unfortunately we were not able to make it into the final, but this time we will,” he said, adding that visiting Karachi before the final is a great pleasure for him.

“I am here before the final and the security is up to the mark. When I go back, everyone will be asking me about the visit and I know they will be pleased to hear all the good experiences I had in these two days.”

Karachi Kings director cricket operations Rashid Latif believes sixth team’s addition will make the league more competitive. “With the inclusion of sixth team, the level of competition has increased and also the chance for our youngsters to play top level cricket with international stars.”

Chief Minister of Sindh Murad Ali Shah was also present at the ceremony and wished the team well. “This time, instead of going to Dubai to watch PSL, I’ll be waiting here in Karachi to welcome the team for the final and I hope that Karachi is one of the teams in the final.”

Multan Sultans set sights on title

Undaunted: PSL newcomers Multan consider themselves genuine title contenders despite coming up against teams with two years of PSL experience. P

KARACHI : Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultan may be the new kids on the block but they have made it clear that they are not here to just make up the numbers, instead setting their sights on claiming the title on their first attempt.

Multan Sultan owner Khizer Schon expressed his optimism about their chances of winning the PSL. “We have some of the best players available and we are hopeful of winning the title,” he told The Express Tribune. “We have some experienced players such as Ahmad Shahzad, Shoaib Malik and Imran Tahir. Add to that the presence of Wasim Akram on the bench and it’s clear that we have the required personnel to win.”

Schon has suggested that fans of both Multan and Lahore Qalandars will be marking their calendars for the two ‘Punjab derbies’. “Lahore and Multan have always been rivals; representing northern and southern Punjab respectively. So it’s no surprise that everyone is looking forward to that game.

The Multan owner also revealed that all his players are willing to travel to Pakistan for the games. “We selected only those players who were willing to come to the matches to be held in Lahore and Karachi,” he said. “Therefore we are confident of welcoming all of them to Pakistan if we reach that mark.”

However, despite expressing complete trust in his team, Schon did have one regret: the unavailability of Indian players for the PSL, stating that he would have wanted current and former Indian skippers Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni in his side.

We have the best players: Shan Masood

Pakistani opening batsman Shan Masood, speaking from Dubai, was similarly confident ahead of his side’s first game against Peshawar Zalmi in the opening match of PSL3.

“We are in good shape and have a team filled with experienced players,” he said. “Across the board we have some of the best players around, whether it be in batting, bowling, fielding or wicketkeeping.”

The left-hander warned his teammates though that they will face a baptism of fire. “We will be playing together for the first time so our opening game is going to be the toughest; especially since it will be against the defending champions,” he said. “There will be pressure on both sides though so it will come down to who avails their chances better.”

Eager to show what we can do, says Sohail Tanvir

Confidence seems to be available in high quantities within the Multan camp and veteran all-rounder Sohail Tanvir says they are eager to show the world what they can do.

“This is a team playing together for the first time so we want to show everyone what we are capable of and hopefully claim the title,” he said. “Players like Sangakkara, Kieron Pollard and Thisara Perera are sure to help the side. I will also be looking to use my experience to help the players.

‘Great honour to be part of Multan Sultans’

Pakistan Test bowler Muhammad Abbas may have been impressing in the longest format of the game but he is not known for his exploits in the shortest format. Understandable, then, that the Sialkot-born is eager to change that after being selected for his first PSL by Multan.

“Being a part of the PSL with this Multan side is a huge honour for me,” he said. “This is going to be my first PSL so I hope to impress in it in order to make a place for myself in the national T20I side.”

Abbas also praised the domestic league for helping unearth talent for the national side. “The last two editions of the PSL have given Pakistan some new players and I am sure that will be the case this time around too,” he said. “Our players and our coaches are extremely experiences so I will sure we will at least make it to the final, even though we just have a few days to train together before the league begins.”

‘Everyone is optimistic about title’

19-year-old Saif Badar, who was in the Lahore roster last year, also discussed the welcoming environment of the Multan team.

“Lahore was a good side but now I am part of Multan so I will do my best to help the team win,” he said. “Everyone here is incredibly supportive and we are all optimistic about winning the title.”

The trophy for the third season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) starting Feb 22 was jointly unveiled by the captains of each of the PSL franchises at a ceremony held in Dubai on Tuesday.

The unveiling ceremony was accompanied by a press conference that PSL chief Najam Sethi along with Darren Sammy, Shoaib Malik, Imad Wasim, Brendon McCullum, Misbah-ul-Haq and Sarfraz Ahmed, will address.

Each of those present were given an opportunity to say a few words, starting with Sethi, who thanked Swarovski for making the trophy, and introduced each of the cricketers present at the dais alongside him.

Praising Karachi Kings skipper Imad Wasim, Sethi said, "He is one of the most talented players. Handing him captaincy of the Karachi Kings is an excellent opportunity. He is the youngest captain here. If the Kings win under Imad, he will be planted firmly in my crosshairs," Sethi joked.

Sethi gave Sarfraz Ahmed, skipper of both the Quetta Gladiators and the national cricket team, his vote of confidence: "If someone can lead the Green Shirts, they can lead any side in the world."

Each of the cricketers addressed the event by turn, starting with Shahid Afridi. "Najam Sethi has done a great thing by holding PSL. It was a challenge and he took it on," he stated.

Defending champions, Peshawar Zalmi's captain, Darren Sammy gave his best to all the other captains. "They are coming for my title," he joked. "I hope the tournament becomes more successful. I hope my team is still in the running when we get to Karachi [for the final]."

Islamabad United captain Misbahul Haq thanked Sethi for his praise. "I think the last two years [of PSL] were wonderful. We enjoyed the competition, it keeps getting tougher with every season," he said.

Brendon McCullum, captain of the Lahore Qalandars, thanked the sponsors and the Pakistan Cricket Board for their hand in the organisation of the PSL. "I couldn't think of a better bunch to play against. You are an amazing country and you've done great things for cricket. I can't guarantee success, but we will try our best."

Sarfraz, who was introduced amid loud applause, also thanked the sponsors. "I hope this season goes as well as the last two. I hope to win this series in our home city of Karachi," he said.

Shoaib Malik, captain of the new franchise Multan Sultans, appreciated Sethi's conception and execution of the PSL. "It's a great sign for Pakistani cricket. The team owners, sponsors and media have played a remarkable role," he said.

Sethi also appreciated the Sultans. "Possibly the biggest leap forward has been the inclusion of the Multan Sultans. They have paid through their pocket to be a part of this. It has been an extraordinary gesture on their part."

The third season of the PSL will kick off in Dubai on Thursday with a star-studded ceremony headlined by the legendary Sufi singer Abida Parveen and American pop star Jason Derulo. Pakistani heartthrobs Ali Zafar and Shahzad Roy will also be entertaining fans at the event.

The tournament opener featuring defending champions Peshawar Zalmi and new entrants Multan Sultans will take place the same night at 10pm in Dubai.

A total of 34 matches will be played across different venues in Dubai, Sharjah, and Lahore. The final is to be held at Karachi’s National Stadium on March 25, according to the PSL schedule.

During the season, all teams will play against each other twice before the top four teams qualify for the play-off stage.

PSL 2018 to be Kevin Pietersen's last professional stint

Former England batsman and Quetta Gladiators' top-order firepower Kevin Pietersen on Monday announced that the PSL's third edition would be his last stint as a professional cricketer.

Pietersen posted a photo of him hugging his son before leaving to join the Gladiators in Dubai on Instagram, saying that goodbyes to his family have always been difficult and he has done it for cricket, "but the one this evening is the last one I'll ever have to do".

"Countless goodbyes to Jessica Taylor and my kids as a cricket player and this one this evening is the last one I’ll ever have to do. I’ve hated every goodbye but also known it’s work so just gotten on with it," Pietersen said.

"The journey has been absolutely amazing and for the next three/four weeks I’ll be a current professional and then it’s chapter closed! Had my time and loved it but the endless goodbyes and travel needs to calm down now."

"Cricket has been the best!" Pietersen said, concluding the post.

Pietersen, who debuted for England in 2004, has had an illustrious career, complete with its ups and downs and its share of controversies.

Averaging 40 in 37 T20 Internationals at a strike rate of 142, he last represented England in 2014 and rift with former England captain Andrew Strauss meant he was ruled out from international cricket.

Pietersen has been playing international leagues ever since and has been engaged with the Gladiators since the first edition of PSL in 2018.

PSL franchises briefed on anti-corruption

1640014-fixingshiz-1519135248-184-640x480.jpg

PRECAUTION BETTER THAN CURE:
PCB and PSL management learned a hard lesson after the PSL2 spot-fixing scandal and is taking effective measures to avoid any such thing from happening in PSL3.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) management organised lectures for the six franchises who are participating in the tournament to guide them on anti-corruption methods.

The lectures were organised in Dubai after all franchises landed in the city for the opening ceremony of the month-long tournament on February 22.

Every team was briefed individually while team officials from the six franchises accompanied the players.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) anti-corruption and security unit head Colonel (R) Azam and general manager legal Salman Naseer warned the players to stay away from suspicious individuals and activity while also briefing them on the cons of fixing and the subsequent punishments.

Five of the six PSL franchises will be staying in one hotel, while Lahore Qalandars will be staying alone in another one.

Team owners will not be allowed to access players’ floors, and if they want to meet the team, will have to do so in the meeting rooms.

PCB officials will also have to take permission before meeting players and if the players want to entertain a guest, they can do so, but only with prior permission and in the lobby of their hotels.

Moreover, players and team officials were also provided mobile sims from when they reached their hotels in Dubai so that their phone activities can be recorded.

Every team will also have an integrity officer with them throughout the tournament who will make sure the players are safeguarded from any suspicious individual or activity.

Since Lahore Qalandars are staying in a different hotel, they will have two integrity officers with the team.

PSL 2018 predictions: Sports journos put their clairvoyant caps on for the T20 spectacle

With the Pakistan Super League 2018 kicking off in just a few more days , Dawn.com decided to test the predictive abilities of some of the biggest names in the Pakistani sports journalists community.

Let's see if their predictions for the big T20 spectacle turn out to be as good as their knowledge of the game.

5a8c27a6d5415.png

Who are you rooting for?

Lahore Qalandars! Because Lahore is my hometown!

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

Tough one! It’s T20 and whoever plays better on the day wins but I would love for a Lahore versus Karachi final.

Who will finish last and why?

I don’t want to predict that — you just never know.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

Fakhar Zaman! He has been in great form of late.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

Shadab Khan!

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

Watch out for Jofra Archer!

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

I really can’t say. It's unfair to take a name.

5a8c27a6de559.png

Who are you rooting for?

Lahore Qalandars! They are my favorite team for a variety of reasons, but what really connects me to them is their work for the development of cricket at the grass-root level. Qalandars’ player development programme to find hidden talent from remote areas is really commendable.

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

I would love to see Lahore Qalandars win the PSL. They finished at the bottom on both past occasions, but they were just unlucky and definitely deserved better. All the teams are equally strong this time so it is hard to predict a winner, but I foresee a Lahore vs Peshawar final.

Who will finish last and why?

I wouldn’t want to answer this one. All the six competing teams are my favourites, and ultimately Pakistan cricket will be the winner. So it doesn't matter who finishes at the bottom.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

Fakhar Zaman.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

Mohammad Amir.

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

Lahore Qalandars' Sohail Akhtar. He’s a hard-hitting batsman and definitely a player to keep an eye on.

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

I'm going to skip this one because naming anyone would mean draining the confidence of that player.

5a8c27a6b74cf.png

Who are you rooting for?

I'll go with Quetta Gladiators.

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

I think it will be the Sarfraz Ahmed-led Quetta Gladiators, simply for their consistency and well-oiled combinations.

Who will finish last and why?

Going by the chaos in their rank and file at the moment, I am backing Karachi Kings to finish last.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

Keeping in view the UAE conditions, Babar Azam makes for a good candidate. Kevin Pietersen, too, could have another big tournament.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

I will back the ever-improving Shadab Khan to fetch most scalps.

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

I think it is Lahore Qalandar's dashing skipper Brendon McCullum's turn to set the turf on fire this time.

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

Easy... Umar Akmal! He has been a letdown throughout his career and is likely to maintain that (low) standard.

5a8c27a67800e.png

Who are you rooting for?

I'm rooting for Karachi Kings because I'm a Karachiite. Not a huge fan of the franchise and how they've gone about things, but it doesn't really matter: the PSL is about supporting your home city!

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

Quetta! Finalists twice in a row, and they play T20 really interestingly in the sense they don't have the best bowling line-ups, but they always, always pack a very powerful punch with their batting. Sarfraz is an excellent captain too, so there's that.

Who will finish last and why?

Laughs Lahore, who else! L for last, L for Lahore.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

We haven't really seen any real stars emerge in terms of batting. Generally, it's been the same old Pakistani faces who've topped the charts and, what, a couple of outsiders? But I'd love to see somebody like Fakhar Zaman top the charts. A young Pakistani, essentially. Islamabad also has that...kia nam hai us ka (what's his name) Sahibzada something. He's an exciting prospect.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

Unsurprisingly, Shadab! He's really improved leaps and bounds over the last year as has Hasan Ali. Generally, I have a feeling that you'll see a local bowler top the charts.

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

The Under-19 captain Hassan Khan, who plays for Fata. He's had an interesting U19 World Cup and is mature beyond his years. I have a feeling he might break out this time around.

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

You don't want to wish anyone flopping or having a bad tournament, so I don't know about that. But maybe one of the star signings: the likes of Brendon McCullum, Kevin Pietersen or Kieron Pollard. Perhaps you might see the veterans not do as well as they're expected to because each one of them is such a huge name and you expect so much from them.

5a8c27a6ba3ac.png

Who are you rooting for?

Being involved with the PSL as Media and Communication Manager, I have to stay neutral — but I started my PSL journey with Peshawar Zalmi, and I think, deep down, I will be rooting for them. However, I would also like to see my hometown franchise, Karachi Kings, play the final on March 25 at a packed National Stadium.

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

It's never easy predicting a cricket tournament, especially a franchise league, since all teams are well balanced. I would like to choose my finalists as stated above: a Karachi vs Peshawar final should be a humdinger. Having said that, the rest of the teams are equally capable of winning the trophy.

Who will finish last and why?

Let's hope it's not the Lahore Qalandars once again. They have worked really hard and I hope they get the rewards this season.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

I would like to give you three names who I feel can make a big impact. They have big reputations already! Chris Lynn, Shoaib Malik and, watch out for this: Khurram Manzoor. You heard it here first.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

Can't go with anyone other than Shadab Khan. I think he will have another great tournament with the ball. Yeah, he's my pick.

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

I am really looking forward to seeing Sahibzada Farhan in action. He has emerged as a wonderful batting talent in recent domestic seasons. Let's see how he deals with the high voltage PSL atmosphere. If I am allowed another pick, it would be Faheem Ashraf.

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

My job is to have a strong rapport with all the players, so I won't want to predict a failure. If I can spin it a tad, I would be keeping a close eye on Kamran Akmal and Sohail Khan. Let's see if they maintain the standard of their performances in 2017 or take a nosedive.

5a8c27a6e63a2.png

Who are you rooting for?

No one. No one at all!

Who will actually win the PSL 2018, and why?

Islamabad United, because of the number of all-rounders they have. Andre Russell, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf... just look at them! They also have two decent emerging players in the form of Sahibzada Farhan and Hussain Talat, plus the construct of their squad is such that they won’t be having many issues with the availability of the players. Others might!

Who will finish last and why?

Lahore Qalandars, because their strategy often does not make sense. They have a lot of power-hitters, but very few are capable of arresting a collapse.

Who will score the most runs in the tournament?

Tough to predict, but top-order batsmen such as Babar Azam and Ahmed Shehzad have a good chance here. They come in real early and know the conditions really well.

Name your pick for the highest wicket-taker.

Again, a tough call but I’d go with Wahab Riaz and maybe Hasan Ali (if he does not miss too many games).

Name one player who you think will surprise everyone.

I have a bad feeling about Umar Amin.

Name one player who will be the biggest letdown.

Brendon McCullum, maybe?

Hope Pietersen is given more access to the commentary booth he was quite entertaining in first tournament when he did color commentary + played as a Cricketer at same time.

The special guests arrived in Dubai early on Wednesday morning on Peshawar Zalmi Chairman Javed Afridi's invitation.

Keeping up with tradition, last year's winners of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Peshawar Zalmi flew in 13 child cancer patients along with two Shaukat Khanum Hospital staff members to witness the PSL opening ceremony and other Zalmi games.

The special guests arrived in Dubai early on Wednesday morning on Peshawar Zalmi Chairman Javed Afridi's invitation.

The young Zalmi fans on their way to the hotel

According to Afridi, this initiative was taken to strengthen the Peshawar Zalmi Foundation's motto which is to #BringBackSmiles.

“We are proud to host these young children. They are our guest and we will make sure that they have a wonderful trip," Afridi said.

He added: "Everyone at Peshawar Zalmi is very excited for their presence and Zalmi players are looking forward to spending time with them. These children are in fact a source of pride and motivation for us all.”

The young Zalmi fans will enjoy the dazzling PSL opening ceremony and will visit various attractions in Dubai during their trip.

In the previous edition of the game, Peshawar Zalmi had invited students from Army Public School Peshawar on a similar trip.
