Sindh CM promises a historic PSL final in Karachi
December 22, 2017

Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Murad Ali Shah in a meeting with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi on Friday in Karachi promised a historic Pakistan Super League (PSL) final in Karachi, reaffirming his commitment towards bringing international cricket back to the metropolis.

The CM, during the meeting, noted that Karachiites are very excited about the opportunity to finally witness the Twenty20 spectacle, and directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) A.D. Khawaja to procure armoured buses so as to ensure security for the visiting cricketers.

"I wish to bring international cricket to Karachi," the CM said.

"The people of Karachi are excited for the PSL final," he said. "I will make sure it's a historic event in every way."

Furthermore, the CM told the IGP and Deputy DG Rangers to perform a "full dress rehearsal" of security drills for the final within 30 days, which he believed "would give the international community confidence in Pakistan's security measures".

The senior superintendent police security, meanwhile, was directed to pay special attention to the setting up of barriers at entry and exit points of the National Stadium which is currently undergoing renovation work in anticipation of the March 25 final.

Also in attendance during the meeting were the home secretary, principal secretary, additional inspector general Karachi and commissioner Karachi.

The third edition of the PSL will kick off in the United Arab Emirates from February 22, with the opening match to be played between defending champions Peshawar Zalmi and new entrants Multan Sultans.

While the majority of the tournament will take place at Dubai and Sharjah's stadia, the two eliminator games will be staged in Lahore before the big finale happens in Karachi.

Masood, a left-handed opening batsman with 12 Tests under his belt, was selected by expansion team Multan Sultans as a Silver category pick.

But Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars were the most active of the six franchises, each adding two new faces to their roster, with the Kings choosing Mohammad Taha (Emerging) and Mushtaq Ahmed Kalhoro (Talent Hunt), and the Qalandars opting for Imran Khan Junior (Silver) and Salman Irshad (Talent Hunt).

Meanwhile, Islamabad United signed Rohail Nazir (Emerging), Quetta Gladiators picked Mohammad Junaid (Talent Hunt) and Peshawar Zalmi inducted Khushdil Shah (Emerging) into their squad.

The expansion draft pool contained players who had gone unpicked during the main draft, those discovered through scouting and talent hunt programmes as well as those who impressed during last month's National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi.

While every franchise picked a player each, Karachi and Lahore were allowed an extra player as their talent programmes had not concluded when the main draft took place in November.

Ali Zafar strikes hat-trick with PSL anthem

Ali Zafar is back for the third time as the voice and soul of the Pakistan Super League’s third edition. His anthem for PSL 2018 is titled ‘Dil Se Jaan Laga De’.

Ali Zafar’s undeniable popularity is manifest in his body of work and songs which connect with the hearts and minds of our cricket loving nation. He continues to champion cricket through his ownership and passion for the sport.

Indeed Ali has also composed the official anthem ‘Ab Khel Kay Dikha’ for the PSL debut season and ‘Ab Khel Jamay Ga’ for the second year of PSL , the latter of which has been seen and heard over 6 million times on YouTube alone.

“Two things that lie at the heart of our nation’s DNA are cricket and music and I am extremely fortunate to live these two passions in this lifetime, says Ali.

“As exciting as it is to write, compose and to sing PSL’s official anthem for the third time, it was actually quite challenging given that last year’s anthem was such a massive hit,” he added.

“I cannot explain how humbling it was to hear it play from every car, home and in every street when the final came to Pakistan. In fact, when I was writing it, I wrote the entire chorus based on the vision, hope and dream of cricket returning to Pakistan, and we are very fortunate that it did!”

“This year’s anthem takes that thought further and it is based on a celebration; that last year’s dream was fulfilled, that the PSL embraces the very essence of cricket and pride; that Pakistan and Pakistanis will take the Super League to the next level again this year,” said Ali Zafar .

On the acting front, Ali Zafar’s Pakistani film debut titled ‘Teefa in Trouble’, directed by maestro Ahsan Rahim and co-starring Maya Ali is due to release in 2018.

‘Dil Se Jaan Laga De’ has been composed, written, produced and sung by Ali Zafar and is slated for an early 2018 release.

KARACHI: Three Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchises chose substitutes at the replacement draft for the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) held at Pakistan Cricket Board’s headquarters in Lahore on Monday.

Karachi Kings were the most active of the six franchises, who made three changes to their initial roster. They signed England batsman Joe Denly in place of his compatriot Luke Wright, who had represented Quetta Gladiators in the opening two editions of the PSL before being released.

Wright was picked up by the Kings in the main draft in November 2017 but was forced to withdraw due to a concussion he suffered during the ongoing 2017-18 Big Bash League.
Karachi also replaced Australian veteran Mitchell Johnson with England pacer Tymal Mills, and New Zealand batsman Colin Munro with opener Lendl Simmons.
Johnson had earlier made himself available for the third edition of the PCB’s flagship T20 league but later opted out citing “personal reasons”.

Meanwhile, the Gladiators replaced West Indies T20I captain Carlos Brathwaite with fellow Barbadian Jofra Archer.

Brathwaite, who famously won the Calypsos the 2016 World T20 by hitting four straight sixes in the final over, opted out of the tournament after being picked in the West Indies squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Lahore Qalandars replaced Sri Lanka’s limited-overs captain Angelo Mathews with New Zealand batsman Anton Devcich.

The third edition of the PSL will begin from February 22 where the six franchises will fight for the title with the landmark final poised to be held in National Stadium Karachi.

Dress rehearsal for PSL 2018 final to take place on Feb 11

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on Tuesday that it will hold a full dress rehearsal of the security arrangements for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final at National Stadium Karachi on February 11.

The PCB, in a letter written to the Chief Minister's Secretariat, stated that the planned dress rehearsal will be keenly monitored by the International Cricket Council, its broadcaster and security consultants.

On the basis of the successful conduct of the rehearsal, recommendations will be made to the Federation of International Cricketers' Association, which will then decide whether or not to allow foreign players to participate in the PSL final, which is slated to be played in Karachi on March 25.

The letter also called a coordination meeting of all stakeholders for February 7 at the office of the inspector general of Sindh Police, where the director security as well as the general manager of the National Stadium will also be in attendance.

“Representatives of the army, intelligence agencies, rangers, the commissioner Karachi, DG protocol, ASF, CAA, DG Health, KESC and other related departments are also instructed to participate in the meeting,” the letter added.

Last year's final, which took place in Lahore, was seen by some as a watershed moment in Pakistan's cricketing history. The game saw several foreign cricketers visit Pakistan under tight security arrangements despite a bomb going off weeks before the match.

Since then, a World Xi side and a Sri Lanka side have also played in Lahore. The PSL 2018 final is seen as the next step in PCB's long-term plan to bring international cricket back to the cricket-deprived nation.

Peshawar Zalmi will take on Multan Sultans in the season opener which will be followed by a double-header on Friday, February 23 in the same city. Karachi Kings will take on Quetta Gladiators and Multan Sultans will play Lahore Qalandars that evening.

Islamabad United will kick-start their campaign on Saturday with a game against Peshawar Zalmi and on the same day the Gladiators will also face the Qalandars.

This will be followed by the playoffs that will be held from March 18 onward. The top two sides in the group stages of the competition will clash first up, with the winner qualifying for the final. This will be followed by an Eliminator on Tuesday, March 20, with the losing team bowing out and the winning side taking on the losing team from the first Qualifier.

This third match, also an Eliminator, will be played on Wednesday, March 21, while the final will be held four days later on March 25.

These two Eliminators will be played in Lahore while the final will be held in Karachi. These are the only three matches that will be played in Pakistan according to this Pakistan Super League schedule.
