Indian DGMO Calls Pakistani Counterpart, Raises Concern Over ‘Specific Targeting of Civilians’ Along LoC

Indian DGMO said that the Indian Army as a professional force takes due care to avoid targeting of civilians and Pakistani Army was expected to do the same.


New Delhi, July 20: Indian Directors-General of Military Operations (DGMO) Lt Gen AK Bhatt on Thursday called up his Pakistani counterpart, Major Gen. Sahir Shamshad Mirza and raised concern over Pakistan’s deliberate attacks on schoolchildren and civilians along the Line of Control (LoC). Lt. Gen. Bhatt summoning of Pakistan’s DGMO comes after on Tuesday, children in three schools were trapped when it came under Pakistan’s heavy shelling in Nowshera sector.

According to an official statement, Lt. Gen Bhatt called up his Pakistani counterpart at 1530 hours on Thursday. In this call he reportedly informed of action by Pakistani troops wherein they had deliberately targeted civilian villages and then fired at school children while they were being evacuated. The official statement released by the Ministry of Defence stated that Indian DGMO said that the Indian Army as a professional force takes due care to avoid targeting of civilians and Pakistani Army was expected to do the same.

While the ceasefire violations of the Pakistani army has also been an issue of contention in these calls between the DGMO, the Lt.Gen. Bhatt emphasised and rapped Pakistan’s act of deliberately targeting civilians and schoolchildren. In this one week, while a six-year old girl was killed as a result of ceasefire violations, another civilian was reported dead due to Pakistan’s firing.

Apart from that, 217 schoolchildren were trapped in their schools when Pakistan fired upon Indian posts and civilian areas on Tuesday, forcing the security forces to carry on a rescue mission in which all the schoolchildren and working staff were rescued.

The security forces used bulletproof vehicles and buses to transport the children from the school, where they were trapped for almost 6 hours. Reportedly, these vehicles of the security forces also came under heavy shelling and one of the vehicles had a narrow escape.

Pakistan’s ceasefire violation along the LoC have been consistent in parts of Nowshera, Kupwara and in the Baramullah district. In these unprovoked attacks upon Indian military posts and civilian zones, Indian soldiers have been martyred and now several incidents of attacks on civilians have also been on the rise. Interestingly, Pakistan DGMO had earlier summoned the Indian DGMO and said that it is India who initiates the shooting across the LoC, thus violating the ceasefire norms. In all of this, India has stated that it reserves the right to retaliate when under attack of Pakistani forces and have resorted to retaliatory attacks.

This is our policy. At the first instance of trouble, civilians are TOTALLY evacuated.

is it also that because landmass wise j and k state on indian side has huge area and they can accommodate such huge evacuations at other locations within the state?
Are these people transported to punjab?
I can give ideal solutions for paksitan side but i know ajk gov wont work on them so its useless. Like building centres for evacuees from loc.

Pakistan is getting more civilian casualities, additionally evacuation is not the final solution , these people have livelihoods attached with the lands they have built their houses on. They also need monetary compensation for the period they stay away from houses. Even on your side how long will these evacuees live comfortably at external locations cut off form their businesses?

We care for our Kashmiri brothers. You shell them off creating havoc. For us, our people are important. So, we evacuated them. What so funny about it?

the number of civilians killed by Indian army in firing is many times more than number of Indian civilians killed.

and we asked him many times before to stop targeting civilians and he never understood a professional army words. now he understood in the taste of his own medicine.

our message was to make Indian army understand that we could have easily killed all those children with just few shells if we want to but we won't ,and hopefully we are not forced to.
