ISLAMABAD: Sri Lanka and Pakistan signed six agreements including one on atomic energy Monday, the two countries’ leaders said, as the strategically important island looks to build its first nuclear plant.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available but it comes after Sri Lanka signed a pact with India in February to build its atomic energy infrastructure, including training of personnel.

Sri Lanka’s new president Maithripala Sirisena swept to power in January, ending a decade of rule by Mahinda Rajapakse, and has moved to reduce China’s influence in his country, which had irked India.

Maithripala Sirisena’s three-day visit to Pakistan has been watched by observers for clues over any further changes in Colombo’s foreign policy.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have traditionally enjoyed strong ties, particularly over defence, with Islamabad providing military assistance during the war against Tamil Tiger guerrillas that ended in 2009.

Speaking at a press conference with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Sirisena said: “At critical moments in our post-independent histories we have stood in solidarity with each other,” adding he was “profoundly grateful for the strong support in the fight against terrorism” by Pakistan.

“We discussed regional and international agreements and signed six agreements in the fields of disaster management, sports, shipping, atomic energy… and in narcotics and academic cooperation,” he added.

Pakistan currently has three operational nuclear plants generating a total of around 740 MW of power and has begun work on two more, including a 2,200-megawatt station to be built with Chinese technical assistance on the Arabian Sea coast at Paradise Beach, 40 kilometres (25 miles) west of Karachi.

Earlier Sharif had spoken of his desire to improve trade and economic relations.

Sirisena, who had arrived Pakistan on Sunday, will also meet Pakistan’s President Mamnoon Hussain during his visit and is due to leave Tuesday. -AFP

Good news. We need strong relations with all of our neighbors.

NS doing a lot of good things around the country. Hopefully he gets to complete his term this time.

Sri Lanka is the first country in the region to have entered into such an agreement with Pakistan. The agreement was signed in the presence of the visiting Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at the PM House.

Sri Lankan President Sirisena said the two countries were charting a dynamic course in relations and invited Prime Minister Sharif to visit Sri Lanka to continue the high level exchanges.Prime Minister Nawaz stressed the need for regular political exchanges between the two countries and said parliamentary visits would further strengthen their relations.

The two countries signed MoUs for cooperation between Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka, Agreement on Cooperation against Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs, Psychotropic Substances and Academic Cooperation and Agreement on Exchange and Collaboration between National Defence University of Pakistan and Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies of Sri Lanka.

Lolz no its not saarc. Its the good memory that who started tamil insurgency and then who helpe ending it.
Great . Srilanka is a brilliant friendly nation. Both countries should work on increasing cooperation in all major domains, economic, defense etc.
The nuclear energy deal is such an awesome news.

and also srilanka should also not allow india sabotage its economic and development projects with other countries mainly China at the moment. Because due to indias pressure sirisena gov has halted the city development project in the north city of srilanka badly left torn by war. Do not forget the past and also how india had backed out from providing defence support under the excuse that it cant sell sophisticated machinery to sri lanka and the how other nations ,that you know who ,offered support. My aim isnt to remind who did favor to whom but that , those who dont stand by you in hard times are no friends. Back to original point ppl in north part are disgruntled due to suffering from prolonged insurgency and a crumbled infrasructure ,dont halt city development projects with china under high interest rates etc excuses. all relations with india aside nothing could replace your people's well being.
