Pakistan snubs Cameron visit

LONDON: British Prime Minister David Cameron’s attempt to mend fragile relations with Pakistan have been dashed after he was snubbed by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, UK Daily Mail reported on Wednesday.
Cameron wanted to visit the country to try and patch up contact with Pakistan, after he said the country “faced both ways on terror” during a visit to India. He had asked to go to Islamabad, on his way to Afghanistan. But his attempt to invite himself ended in a firm refusal, as Prime Minister Gilani said he did not want to be ‘tagged on’ to a visit to Afghanistan, according to the Daily Mail. Cameron often tries to squeeze several countries into a single foreign visit, as busy PM has to try and deal with the recession and cuts agenda at home.
His last trip to the region ended with Cameron causing great offence, first to Pakistan for casting doubt on its commitment to fighting terror, and second to Israel for criticizing their treatment of Palestinians while he was addressing Turkey.
He tried to arrange the visit a month ago. At press conference in Presidential Palace in Kabul, Cameron failed to repeat his controversial remark that Pakistan faced “both ways on terror.” He hailed Pakistan’s “progress” in clearing up terrorism camps in Swat valley.
Whitehall sources admitted that. “They said timing wasn’t great for them. They were not sure the Prime Minister would be there.”
Cameron also had to sidestep embarrassing questions over Wikileaks files, in which President Karzai had questioned effectiveness of British forces in Helmand province. British PM shrugged off comments as not relevant and referring to a time when British troops were deployed too thinly across the region.
“If you look back to 2006, 2007, 2008, it’s clear now that we didn’t have enough troops in Helmand to deliver the security that was necessary,” Cameron said. “Of course there are frustrations… but relationship between last premier, this prime minister and Hamid Karzai is strong.”
Cameron also raised possibility of troops being withdrawn from early next year. “We are cautiously optimistic we have right strategy. We are now a year or so into that. We have put in resources to back up that strategy which has a very clear focus, a focus on national security.”
Questioned by Afghan media about how Britain could use its influence with Islamabad to stop Islamic schools (madrassas), Cameron said that “we do have a very long term relationship with Pakistan. One of our largest embassies anywhere in the world is in Islamabad.’
President Karzai had to sidestep questions over why he had been disparaging over British troops in WikiLeaks cables. “Britain remained a steadfast supporter of Afghanistan. WikiLeaks documents are having some truths and some not so truths in them. Britain has contributed in its sacrifice of its soldiers… for which Afghan people are grateful.”

He's not in India and the Afghan's don't have billions of dollars worth of business and military deals to offer, of course he 'failed to repeat his controversial remarks'.

Good for Pakistan.

This is a good indication of what I said earlier. Bharatis get a hard on when anything is said against Pakistan. They throw some important considerations out of the window later due to all the emotions. In this case, the important considerations are whether these words will result in anything practical. And from the looks of things, no. They only say it to please the bharatis while they are in India, and then normal services resume not long after they leave India.

Just like we saw recently with Minimi aka sarkozy, its a simple case of lets try to get more and more money out of the atm by inserting Pakistan bashing credit card. But the reality on the ground outside the bank is completely different. :pakistan:

dont blame the Bhartis they have a genuine grievance for loosing a large chunk of Indian Sub continent that became Pakistan...
they have come to terms with Pakistan more than the British..

these cunning rascals are the most deceiving, two faced and grudging people you will come across.. they never ever accepted Pakistan's creation as it was not in their grand plans..
although their past glory is .. well a thing of a past but they try to copy their bigger cousins across the atlantic and try to talk big here and there.. not sparing a chance to give their dismissive comments about Pakistan but honestly.. no one gives a flying toss to what their prime ministers have to say.

Camoron should have been told that he is not welcome until he appoligize officially. Otherwise we will not be proving him any security or reception and he will be on his own to book a hotel for himself, metro cab from airport and fend his mission.

Ten years down the line the Indians will be crying how the "Pakistani" credit card milked their treasury dry and the western diplomats will laugh over it. Obsession is not healthy by anyways. These days it looks like anyone can close a sale with India by going to New Delhi and bashing Pakistan. We better start demanding our commission out of this now!

What else is new, Foreign representative visits a state, condemns it's enemy's last act and hopes to secure a deal...

I don't expect him to say the exact same thing every where he goes. All we want him to do is to be mindful of India's concerns. He don't have to explicitly condemn Pakistan every where goes. In my opinion, its just silly to expect. Its funny for you guys to take pride in this little thing.

Also, one thing I am observing these days is that de-hyphenation of India and Pakistan and hyphenation of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Even Obama said he would come in 2011 to Pakistan along with Afghanistan. If I were Pakistan, I would be worried with this development. Or am I reading too much into this.

Guys i am seriously appalled at the audacity by which you guys are convinced that anyone who visits India say's something bad about Pakistan and we will open our coffers for them....Now either you guys are doing an ego satisfaction(which i have no objection to) or too naive to understand diplomacy...

Cameroon's, Sarkozy's, Obama's all played diplomacy and so are we....We are not dumb and we have not signed deals with them just because they condemn safe terrorist heavens in Pakistan...We see benefits on those deals and we went ahead with them...As an extra incentive we have managed to corner Pakistan(may be by a fraction) on terrorism...Whether this will make any change on ground is a different debate but such comments are not good in geo-politics and do reduce your bargaining power....In short all these leaders used to refrain from making such comments a decade back...Now for whatever reason they are making such comments is a welcome step from Indian POV...Anyhow one this is a fact - We are signing deals because they are bringing benefits to us...Period...

As far as the subject matter is concerned there is no reason for Cameroon to up the ante and say anything in AF. He has already shared his views on the subject and so far neither he has apologized for what he said nor has backed off from those comments....

Now thats being extremely paranoid but we can't help you with your insecurities.
Though terrorism emanating from Pakistan is a global concern and not only a regional one.

Good show Mr. Gilani... Good show! Finally some Cajones ..

I beg to differ on this....As per me this is not good diplomacy....UK is still a power(economic and military) and a UNSC permanent member....Yes they have a dependency on Pak for WOT but that does not mean they can be allowed to slide with India for good, no???

Mind it i do agree that Pakistan is supposed to send strong signals that Cameroon remarks were not liked but at end of the day diplomatic tools should be used to increase the number of friends you have, no???
