Pakistan signs defence accords with South Korea and Qatar

Jon Grevatt Jane's Asia-Pacific Industry Reporter -Bangkok

The Pakistani government has approved the signing of two separate defence agreements with South Korea and Qatar, it was announced on 6 January.

The agreements, both of which are termed by Islamabad as memorandums of understanding (MoU), are designed to enhance defence co-operation between Pakistan and the two countries, a government statement said.

In addition, it said the MoU with South Korea will boost military personnel exchanges, while the pact with Qatar will expand collaboration in defence research activities. The latter MoU is also aimed at enhancing co-operation between Qatar's Centre for Strategic Studies and Pakistan's National Defence University.

Pakistan's agreement with South Korea is the continuation of a relationship that has seen the countries becoming closer defence trading partners over the past two years.

In November 2006, for example, Seoul-based Poongsan and the Pakistan Ordnance Factory signed a deal to co-produce 155 mm base-bleed DPICM k-310 artillery ammunition for Pakistan's armed forces and in June 2008 South Korea agreed to export parts for Pakistan's Cessna T-37 training aircraft.

While no such defence trade is known to have taken place between Pakistan and Qatar, the MoU conforms to a trend over the past three years that has seen Islamabad forge strong defence relations with predominantly Muslim nations.

Similar deals have been signed with Brunei, Jordan, Malaysia, Turkey, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

Good Job Pakistan! United we stand, divided we fall. I dream of the day when Pakistan would sign Nuclear Umbrella agreement with our friends. We provide our friends with Nuclear Umbrella and they provide us the support that we need. Set up a combined military research and development center to produced superior civil and military use equipment. Then no moron country would be able to fondle them.

I have heard that South Korea has great war ships which are comparable to USA's War Ships. How true is it and is there some cooperation between Pakistan and South Korea in this regard?

SK has a great shipbuilding tradition, but their warships are all american designs IMO.

Congrats to Pakistan.
This will boost the Morale and the Global Image of Pakistan alltogether.

They have even built the licensed U-214 in their shipyards and inducting it into their navy.

So if we tomorrow buy U-214s, we will have Turkish back up support, rather SK as a back up support too.

There is nothing to be proud of, its not something where we start beating trumpets and announced that when we are in need wouldthese nations stand by us and will provide all out support, ofcourse not, its just an agreement of producing 155mm gun ammunition jointly and defence studies. What so good about this.

This can be done with any country.

Only almighty knows when will we come out of our dellusional thoughts. hun...

well just the fact that we maintain military relations with South & North korea is a great feat to achieve! its a balanced approach that we should aim for! in pakistan's history we have always made enemies with the enemies of our "friends" and soon it becomes a personal war & we are left stranded! this time however, we are being smart & keeping things balanced!

there is alot we can learn from the south koreans!

You are absolutely right. When the news came out, I was thinking that wasn't it North Korea that was more of our friend than South Korea and we were assisting each others fill each others gaps. Its been North Korea which was a close ally in 90s I guess and that was the era when we heard lots of Indian bashing about Pakistan taking North Korean missile technology etc. Its good that Pakistan has shaken hand with the other side too and keeping the both sides going can be beneficial for us in more ways than keeping one of the two ally and the other as foe. 10/10 this time.

It's indeed a positive move by Pakistan. I have been saying this since 2001 that we need to improve our friendship with South Korea, Qatar, Brazil and Iran. South Korea has alot to offer to Pakistan, their expertise in building U-214, Tank, Weapons, Cheolmae II M-SAM, etc,
