Pakistan showing Interest in S-400: TOI ??

NEW DELHI: Russia remains peeved with India for selecting French Rafale fighters and American Chinook and Apache helicopters over its aircraft, as also for stalling the proposed joint projects for producing its fifth-generation fighter aircraft (FGFA) and multi-role transport aircraft (MTA).

India, in turn, remains miffed with Russia for not sticking to promised delivery schedules and jacking up costs mid-way through execution of contracts as well as persisting technology transfer hurdles and poor spares support. India is also livid at Russia for lifting the arms embargo against Pakistan, which has already led to a Mi-35 attack helicopter contract amid talk of more deals being in the offing.

But casting aside such heartburns, India and Russia are now getting all set to further step-up their long-running strategic tango that led the two countries to seal defence deals worth over $45 billion since the early-1960s.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar left for a three-day visit to Russia late on Friday night to discuss a slew of major military projects on the anvil, ranging from the lease of a nuclear-powered submarine to the acquisition of S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems, which will set the stage for the Modi-Putin summit in Moscow in December.

India's acquisition of 10 S-400 systems, which can destroy hostile aircraft, stealth fighters, missiles and drones at ranges up to 400-km, is right on top of the agenda, as was first reported by TOI on October 11. MoD sources on Friday said the project was being "fast-tracked" as a "critical operational requirement" through a government-to-government deal.

It has become all the more urgent since China will get six S-400 battalions from 2017 onwards under a $3 billion deal inked with Russia. "Pakistan, too, is showing interest in the S-400 systems," said a source.

Similarly, MoD wants to kick off the joint project for the manufacture of around 200 Russian Kamov Ka-226T light utility helicopters under the "Make in India" policy by the next financial year. The acquisition of a second nuclear-powered submarine on lease is also very much on the cards. India had inducted the first Akula-II submarine, christened INS Chakra, on a 10-year lease from Russia in April 2012, under a secret $900 million deal inked way back in January 2004.

All this also dovetails into India's long-term plan to build six nuclear attack submarines (SSNs), which was approved by the cabinet committee on security and will see some Russian collaboration, as was first reported by TOI in February.

But the FGFA project remains deadlocked, with India still not fully confident of the technical capabilities of the Russian Sukhoi T-50 (PAK-FA) fighters and the timeframe in which they can actually be delivered.

Russia is yet to accept India's request for IAF pilots to test-fly the T-50, which as of now does not meet the critical FGFA parameter of being able to super-cruise. Moreover, India is now focusing on developing its own FGFA under the indigenous AMCA (advanced medium combat aircraft) project.

Typo??

Not a typo and Congratulations to Pakistan.

India still has to wait for some more time as Russia has now linked India's s-400 acquisition to FGFA/PAK-FA deal.

Showing interest and actually obtaining something are two different things. It's time we stopped celebrating in showing interest and try to actually acquire them.

.
..... No more orders from India, if they do such deals with Pakistan. .....

Who gives a damn about shitty india and her thinking

Then why did you take pains to comment? You could have ignored and pass.
People give a damn, that's why they ask for Nuclear treaty same like India, Same treatment like India on international level and so on.

i dont think it will go beyond an rfi. Russian equipment is very good quality especially their sams but i dont imagine a deal materialising. russia will see this to their advantage by spoofing india to do more business with them just like the su-35 episode.and if they fail pakistan will get the equipment. so its basically russia telling india "if you want the s400 you better be quick making the deal as pakistan is interested in this too" in some cases they may not be.

also in the mis 2000's pakistan was interested in getting long range sams as well as tot. they had an offer from eurosam but it was with out tot, which was refused by musharaf.

There is no doubt that S-400 is very capable and potent system. But even if it is on offer to Pakistan and Russians are willing to sell, does Pakistan has enough depth to obviate the need of such a system?
As to the Su-35 saga, Russians seems to be quite convinced that Su-30MKi might be the last big fighter jet deal(Besides the upgrades which are more of a necessity of the client Country) for decades to come unless and until India commits to FGFA, hence they are using all kinds of tactics to spoof India into such a deal.

russia has now realised that india is moving towards the "west" and russia needs to exploit every opportunity with india as it may be their last.

Honestly I don't think the Russians are doing this to pressure India, there's no need. They know the Indians will remain their customers on many high profile programs and their sales to Pakistan won't have a serious impact. Sure, the Indians could put pressure by threatening to cut some major deals, but I doubt they'll do it, especially when they've already committed a lot of money to Western and indigenous systems. And to see the Indians suddenly re-prioritize Russian systems at the cost of others (which might be more suited to their needs), that's just absurd and unprofessional, I doubt they'll go that far either.

.
I don't see this happening. An "interest" is a very vague thing to base anything upon. I say stick to Chinese and Western systems.

.
Always "interest" in major Russian items from Pakistan....nothing ever materialises.

In your dreams only. But actually Pakistan has already purchased MI-35. Perhaps you were sleeping or watching pogo at that time.

Is that it?? The MAIN reason for the Russians to work with the Pakistanis???? When the author gets done farting the patriotic gas from his mind and tummy, someone please tell him the meaning of "long-term strategic relationships", and "establishing trade relationships with new and growing markets" which offer greater future profits!!!

Apparently everything, including a hungry bird flying for food at 5 AM everyday, somehow happens due to some mysterious connection with India. Outside of India and the Indians, people have no sense, ability to build relationships, or ability to do trade, or even eat healthy food to live longer!!!!
