Jordan hangs 11 men after eight-year death penalty moratorium

AMMAN: Jordan executed 11 men convicted of murder by hanging on Sunday, the interior ministry said, as it ended an informal eight-year moratorium on the death penalty.
“Eleven criminals convicted in different cases of murder were executed at dawn,” the official Petra news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying.
Authorities said the men were all Jordanians convicted on murder charges in 2005 and 2006.
Jordan's last previous executions were in June 2006 and 122 people have since been sentenced to death.
Interior Minister Hussein Majali suggested recently that the moratorium might end, saying there was a “major debate” in Jordan on the death penalty and that “the public believes that the rise in crime has been the result of the non-application” of capital punishment.
A number of countries in the Middle East continue to impose the death penalty for serious crimes, including Jordan's neighbour Saudi Arabia which has executed 83 people so far this year.
China by far carried out the most executions last year, numbering in the thousands, followed by Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United States, human rights group Amnesty International said in a report in March.

What about abolishing this useless death penalty in the US? Look where this do as I say not as I do policy has got us.

There is no evidence that imposing the death penalty has any impact whatsoever in deterring terrorism or other serious crimes, he said in remarks sent to journalists in Geneva.

"In fact, by feeding a cycle of revenge, it may even be counter-productive," Colville said.

Pakistan should refrain from resuming executions: UN

Mr. Colville,

There is no evidence that the contrary (as in not executing the terrorists) has any impact in addressing the scourge of terrorism either. The purpose of punishment is not gauged by whether or not it deters like-minded criminals from engaging in the same act. No. The purpose of punishment is to ensure a criminal is given what he so rightly deserves.

Retribution is the cornerstone of all modern forms of punishment, and whereas your system incarcerates them and puts fetters on their freedom of movement, only to release them back into the world and watch them re-offend, the system Pakistan wants to embrace is one which offers a far more effective and permanent solution - capital punishment. Who are you to tell Pakistan otherwise?

The nation has spoken.

Lastly, Mr. Colville, the terrorists are also being executed because I, as a citizen of Pakistan, refuse to let my hard-earned taxes transmute to their benefit. I refuse to let my money go to the welfare of a terrorist, to keep him well-fed, to keep him warm and to give him shelter.

What is your current reaction over human right violations made by C.I.A and those images released accidently. Please, leave us alone for god sake and we will Inshallah handle it on our own.

GENEVA- The U.N. human rights office appealed to Pakistan on Friday to refrain from resuming executions after the massacre of 141 people in a Peshawar school, saying this would not stop terrorism and might even feed a "cycle of revenge".

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted Pakistan's moratorium on capital punishment on Wednesday, a day after Taliban gunmen attacked the school and killed 132 students and nine teachers. The slaughter has put pressure on his government to do more to tackle the Islamist Taliban insurgency.

The U.N. rights office also urged Pakistan's army and security forces to respect international law during their counter-terrorism operations so as to avoid exacerbating bloodshed.

"To its great credit, Pakistan has maintained a de facto moratorium on the death penalty since 2008, and we urge the government not to succumb to widespread calls for revenge, not least because those at most risk of execution in the coming days are people convicted of different crimes, and can have had nothing to do with Wednesday's premeditated slaughter," U.N. human rights spokesman Rupert Colville said.

There is no evidence that imposing the death penalty has any impact whatsoever in deterring terrorism or other serious crimes, he said in remarks sent to journalists in Geneva.

"In fact, by feeding a cycle of revenge, it may even be counter-productive," Colville said.

He voiced hope that the perpetrators or planners of the mass school killing be brought to justice as soon as possible, while urging restraint by the Pakistani security forces.

"It is extremely important to maintain the moral and legal high ground, as human rights violations by authorities, especially civilian casualties, simply harden attitudes and feed the spiral of violence," Colville said.

The Pakistani Taliban, waging war to overthrow the government and establish an Islamic state, had pledged to step up attacks in response to a major, ongoing army campaign against the insurgents in tribal areas.

Please send your children and we killed them and after that we humbly listen your lectures. :close_tema:

Pakistan does not care about what UN say anyway. Otherwise the Al-Qaida associate Hafiz Saeed would not be roaming free. The only time UN become relevant is when Kashmir resolution is discussed.
