ISLAMABAD - Deputy Ambassador EU, Perry Muewon, has said Pakistan will have to overcome its energy crisis to avail the much coveted GSP-plus status - voted by the EU parliament.
Talking exclusively to Online on Sunday, he deliberated that attaining the G-plus status would be a game-changer for Pakistani exports to Europe, which would be free of any duties and quotas, with an immediate boost of above Euro 10 billion mark from its present of Euro 8.5 billion volume.
Declaring the EU's process of voting for bestowing G-plus status as a positive stance for nine entrants, including Pakistan, he said that it was difficult to predict any successful outcome for any of the entrants; since European circles had strong apprehensive reservations about the package, which could affect the local European textile and garment sector.
He further deliberated that voting procedure was only a 'formal (technical) procedure', primarily geared at vetoing any possible awarding.
Replying to a question, he held it imperative for Pakistan to overcome its impending crisis in health, education and social sectors through controlling its internal and energy crisis. He also lauded the ongoing struggle of the incumbent government for resolving these crises, for which EU was ready to assist Pakistan at all levels. He also cited the recently awarded Sukahrov Award for Malala Yousufzai as a proof of such European cooperation.
Meanwhile, Czech Republic has pledged support to Pakistan in its effort to get GSP plus status in the EU Parliament, state media reported on Sunday.
The assurance was given by Czech Foreign Minister Jan Kohout and Deputy Trade Minister Milan Hovorka while talking to Minister of State for Commerce‚ Textile and Privatization‚ Khurram Dastgir Khan in Prague.
Both sides explored possibilities of Pak-Czech economic cooperation in energy‚ coal mining‚ automobiles and bilateral investment.
Visa facilitation and joint ventures were also discussed.
