Pakistan seeks Australia uranium after India ban lifted

5 December 2011 Last updated at 08:25 GMT

Pakistan says it should be allowed access to uranium from Australia, after a long-standing ban on exporting the substance to India was overturned.

Delhi welcomed Sunday's vote by Australia's governing Labour Party to drop the ban on the sale of uranium.

But Pakistan's high commissioner to Australia responded by saying his country should get equal treatment.

Australia, which holds an estimated 40% of the world's uranium, already exports it to China, Japan, Taiwan and the US.

It has traditionally banned uranium sales to countries that are not signatories to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty - this includes both India and Pakistan.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard persuaded her party that India was being so closely watched by the international community that the sale would be safe.

But Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Malik Abdullah told Australia's ABC radio that past concerns about the security of Pakistan's nuclear industry had now been set aside.

He said the case of AQ Khan, a Pakistani scientist accused of passing nuclear secrets to Iran and Libya, was in the past.

He denied Pakistan was a volatile state, unsuitable to receive uranium supplies. The Australian government has not responded to his comments.

Australia's uranium industry has welcomed the policy shift.

self inflicting wounds are more painful than others inflicting them....

. . . . . .
What is embarracing in that. If India being a non-signatory of NPT can get it so Pakistan can also, as the ban has uplifted....

It's embarrassing because Pakistan comes off as a petulant child craving the same treatment which India receives.

Maybe just bad timing? But seriously... What were your policy makers thinking?

I agree my brother, but its Ozis uranium and they can sell it to whom ever they wish.
The embarasment is not for India in this case but is inflicted up on Pakistan by Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Malik Abdullah.
The words of Pakistan's High Commissioner Abdul Malik Abdullah are like childs talk, its like when one kid get a new toy the other cries to get the same.
Its sale of uranium and if Pakistan has to earn its reputation to be offered such privilage, and not by asking. I hope you get it.

To the thread starter, I know that you are rediculing the Pakistanis and most Indians enjoy when they hear some thing bad about others. Lets not post topic that are insulting our neighbours.

.
This reminds of that civil nuclear deal episode. Just when India got the exemption, Pakistan suddenly realised the need to have a similar kinda deal. Leaders in Pakistan needs to instill little bit of esteem to their arguments & shouldn't wait to realise their need when someone else fulfills his own. Not a wise thing to ask for a share of spoil hunted by someone else.

. .
Pakistani Policy Makers seems to love ditto india-
should rename them to Pakistani Copied Policy Makers-

.
Why does Pakistan want to be seen just like India? and they are saying that openly.
I bet the Aussies would have been laughing..

. .
yeah you r right ...........bad timing.........until pakistan uses its own reserve`s of uranium...........our policy makers are trying to be patient in "gaining and losing" game.just watch and wait.
