Pakistan says it's not aware of India's $20M offer for flood relief

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
-India and Pakistan are rival neighbors
-Pakistan has previously accepted a $5 million offer from India through the U.N.

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- India offered another $20 million in aid to its rival neighbor Pakistan on Tuesday, but an official in the flood-ravaged country says he has no knowledge of the aid.

Abdul Basit, spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, said Tuesday he is not aware of such an offer by India.

Basit says India was formally notified that Pakistan would accept an earlier offer of $5 million through the United Nations -- but not directly from India.

Basit said Pakistan did not accept the aid directly from India because "that is our government's policy." However, Basit said, Pakistan has received aid directly from other countries.

At least 1,667 people have died in colossal flooding in Pakistan, according to the country's disaster authority. At least 17 million Pakistanis have been affected.

It can be other way round also that is pakistan is falsely telling that they have no info.

Or establishment in pakistan having some communication problem not knowing what happening where.

Also, what publicity we have got??????? Your army have not allowed us to donate directly or send 400 doctors so its coming through UN.

pakistan has already said that they will accept Indian aid through UN ...so ask UN about this..why should India notify pakistan when pakistan will not accept the Indian aid through India directly.

.
Naturally,
Mr. Abdul Basit is not a member here so can't fault him for not knowing. Mr. Ban Ki Moon will notify him in due course. The money is needed to be put to use, not the news.

Please, prove all what you are saying, because it seems you have lot of inside information in state affairs of both states!

Why should India be dealing with Pakistan establishment?

other states are dealing with President or foreign minister and this should be your contact or you have special way of handling foreign affairs?

A country is announcing aid for another, that is also India to Pakistan, now how can you imagine that is false? People to people, org to org it happens but country to country? No. Pakistan may deny it but India might be going through UN.

India has announced an additional $20 million assistance to Pakistan to help it cope with the worst floods in eight decades which claimed more than 1,600 lives and displaced nearly 20 million people.

This was announced by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) after Pakistan agreed to accept India's initial aid offer of $5 million that is to be routed through the United Nations.

In a suo motu statement, Krishna said the Cabinet had decided to increase its assistance to Pakistan from $5 million, announced earlier, to $25 million following a more concrete assessment of the damages caused by the natural disaster and the urgent needs of the people of Pakistan.

While $5 million will be given to the World Food Program (WFP) for its relief efforts in Pakistan, the remaining $20 million will be provided to the "Pakistan Initial Floods Emergency Response Plan" launched by the U.N. office for the coordination of humanitarian efforts, he said.

Noting that the recent floods have been described as the worst in that part of the region in the last 80 years, Krishna said: "We cannot remain unconcerned with this grave humanitarian crisis of enormous magnitude in our immediate neighborhood."

The enhanced aid follows an earlier telephonic conversation between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yusuf Raza Gilani during which the former conveyed New Delhi's readiness to provide more assistance to Islamabad.

According to the latest U.N. assessments, 17.2 million people were affected by the floods which have left 1,600 people dead, more than 1.2 million houses either damaged or destroyed and caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

Jigs.... news papers is no diplomatic channel.
We wait until govt. of Pakistan confirm it.
It is not sensible to credit a news claim without evidence.
Indian ambassador in Pakistan can call press conference and presenting the missing evidence.
What is holding him back?????

Diplomatic channel hahaha. Your government is so out of touch they can't even take aid directly from India. They try to act like they have some leverage by asking India to route it through the U.N. so it doesn't look like direct aid. Now it is "oh nope we had no clue they were sending us more aid" Come on it is obvious Pakistan is giving India the run around.

But hey if that is what the government chooses to do while people die that is their choice. Since these are still "sensitive issues" while 1/5th of the country is underwater.

Yar come on... I mean just use common-sense, they are offering aid (no strings attached)... What is the problem here? Why is Pakistan acting like a 10th grader having a period?

This is totally sad... Consider the time when Mush sent food and aid to Indian on a PAF C-130, they were far more mature in accepting that gesture.

Our government are acting like pre-pubescent children, throwing their toys in a sudden tantrum in a cheap bid to "get their own way" whilst their citizens suffer!

I seriously don't blame the Indian members here for being irate, what the hell. They are offering us aid and A) We WANT it!!!! B) We WANT it on OUR Terms!

WTF... If i was India and Pakistan did this, i would say... "Up yours buddy"... Seriously, our people need to act more mature if we are to move forward in the 21st century.
