Pakistan’s India obsession a mistake: Obama

Pakistan’s obsession with India that makes it look at its neighbour as an “existential threat” is a mistake and it would do well to shed this contest mentality, U.S. President Barack Obama has said.

Speaking to BBC on the eve of his visit to Britain, Mr. Obama said both he and British Prime Minister David Cameron understood that Pakistan had been “very obsessed” with India.

He said the U.S. wants Pakistan to realise that the biggest threat to it does not come from outside but is “home-grown.”

He said: “They see that as their existential threat. I think that’s a mistake. I think that peace between India and Pakistan would serve Pakistan very well.”

He said Pakistan needs to do shed its orientation of looking at every issue through the India lens to be able to make full economic progress.

“It would free up resources and capacity for them to engage in trade and commerce, and make enormous strides that you’re seeing India make. But that’s their orientation.”

Mr. Obama added: “It’s been that orientation for a long time. And so they look at issues like Afghanistan. Or the border region in the FATA (Federally Administered Tribal Areas) through the lens of what does this mean for our contest with India.”

Mr. Obama said the U.S. is currently trying to bring about a reorientation in Pakistan’s attitude towards India and make it recognise that the main threat is from terrorists operating from Pakistan soil.

He said: “Well, part of what we’re trying to do is to talk to them about how they can reorient their strategy so that they understand that the biggest threat to Pakistan and its stability is home-grown.”

Mr. Obama added: “And that if we don’t go after these networks that are willing to blow up police stations, blow up crowds of people assassinate Pakistani elected officials with impunity — if they don’t get a handle on that then they’re gonna see a significant destabilisation of the country.”

Uncle sam's obsession with Pakistan's nuclear assets is the greatest mistake and it has lietrally become a burden for the security of the entire world. The time has come for Pakistan to flatly tell the americans to get lost or else Pakistan is going to get fckd really hard by this so-called 'ally' of Pakistan!

100% agree with kicking and stopping the anti-India bugaboo attitude used to mislead, enrage, and confuse ordinary Pakistanis who need a peaceful and better life. Part of the answer to terrorism is immediate jobs, long term re-education, and freedom of all religions inside Pakistan more than is now the case. Competition economically with India, the world's third greatest economy, and in the field of religious thinking and ideas are the way out and the way up. Otherwise Pakistan has nationally sentenced itself to repeated failures and never attaining the potential which democracy can bring over time.

The nonsense is running around like a flu.

80% of Indian military is on Pakistani borders. All their offensive divisions are on Pakistani borders. Obama and others have their head buried in the sand.

Bharat regularly makes statements about carrying out raids, surgical strikes in Pakistan.

Good god, get a grip with the reality and facts.

That said, we still need to make sure we don't spend exuberant amount of money on the military. We currently spend 4% of GDP, which is slightly higher than average but nothing extraordinary. And a lot of this is due to WoT - if WoT ends this will probably come down to somewhere around 3% - 3.5%.

i am an ordinary Pakistani and i have no doubt about Indian aggression against Pakistan, Indian terrorism against Pakistan and btw i have no concern if you being an American agree with what your president or anyone from your country is saying about internal matters of my country

Deliberately blindfolded is not good, Mr. President. Do you really think India is white, was like a newborn innocent child? you serious? No, you know all the truth, but U.S. policy and interests decide you can not exert strong pressure on India, so, you see, India threat to Pakistan is just a fantasy. Americans want it to be a fact, so let it be a fact, but it is not a fact, so let us go blindfolded. But let us tell the truth, deceiving your own is not a good thing, the United States Mr. President.

Election of Obama as US president a big mistake.
Taking full credit of Osama killing another big mistake.
US Invasion of Iraq also big mistake.
Ignoring Indian statements after OBL attack will be big mistake.

Given the actions of US and his hypocrite mouth, trusting USA is also a big mistake.

The United States is aware that Central and South Asia as a source of the problem is the game between Pakistan and India. Yes, the United States know, but America can not do anything to India, because of strategic policy and interests. So, you see, since can not change the fact that Let us change ourselves, at least I can make myself believe the hypnosis, of course, Pakistan really believe? even I have hypnotized myself and my reality is irrelevant. this is your idea, Mr. Obama?

The US has a pathetic record of being a one-eyed monster. It twists facts according to its need and then go on advising others.

The United States can not change India's policy, also can not increase Pakistan's defense forces to meet the challenges of t India. So, sir, if you know it, if not a realistic policy, you just can hypnotize yourself, other people are not so stupid who you want.
