Pakistan, Russia ink agreement to build an offshore gas pipeline

Russian energy giant Gazprom has signed an inter-corporate agreement with Inter State Gas Systems Pakistan for constructing an offshore gas pipeline, a press release said on Wednesday.

A Russian delegation called on Petroleum Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan at his office to express their interest in the exploration and production of gas in Pakistan. Vitaly Markelov of Gazprom, who was part of the Russian delegation, and IGS’s Managing Director Mubin Saulat signed the agreement.

Appreciating the expanding trajectory of bilateral relations between the two countries, the federal minister termed the pipeline project a manifestation of multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and Russia.

Gazprom will use the pipeline to transport gas from its sources in the Middle East onwards to Pakistan and may extend it further to South Asian countries. “The pipeline would follow an integrated approach including other ancillary projects such as Under Ground Gas storage, desalination, and other power projects,” the press release said.

Pakistan will import some 500 million to 1 billion cubic foot of gas every day from Russia, which would be transported via sea link, the agreement says. The pipeline construction is expected to be completed in three to four years.

After Pakistan’s gas deposits depleted, the country started facing a shortage of natural gas to meet its industrial and domestic needs, especially in Punjab. Responding to the crisis, the government introduced various policies, including limiting supply to CNG stations. Later on, it signed various agreements to import LNG.

However, with Special Economic Zones of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor materialising, the demand for gas will increase. The offshore pipeline will be one of the key projects to meet this growth.

There is no sea between Russian Federation and Pakistan. Unless they are talking about the Gas fields Russia owe within Iranian territory and wants to sells the gas from there to Pakistan. But still why the sea? Just build overland pipeline from Iranian territory into Pakistan.

So wouldn't completing the IP pipeline make more sense via the land connection through Baluchistan, unless someone has created a sea in the middle that I may have missed?

Thats cods wallop, why would you build an undersea pipeline costing a hundreds of time more than a land pipeline and pass through where, Iran ?? Why would Iran do that when they have their own pipeline and gas and agreements that cost them millions to build and Pakistan shafted them to please their Arab and US masters

Russian energy giant Gazprom will conduct a feasibility study of the project and after conducting the feasibility study, the final cost of the gas supply project will be assessed by Gazprom while the project will be constructed by Russia on a build, own, operate and transfer basis.

Sources at the petroleum division informed that it is expected that the pipeline will be completed in three to four years starting from March 2019.

My question applies to either, or both, countries. What sea would Gazprom lay the pipeline to get to either India or Pakistan? Neither makes any sense, specially if I look at the atlas.

But wouldn't the overland route to Pakistan be cheaper? Unless the goal is to get to India while avoiding Pakistan? And wouldn't that still be Iranian gas so how does Iran let two third party countries sign such a contract?

Nevermind all that. I will just wait and see what, if anything, develops with this project.
