ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia have decided to enter into new phase of defence cooperation as Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt has concluded his trip to Russia where he visited various air force related defence installations and had meetings with defence high-ups, including his Russian counterpart.

It was the first-ever visit of any chief of Pakistan Air Force to that country. Air Chief Marshal Butt who has returned to the Air Headquarters has termed the visit a great success. In a brief chat with The News, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt on Tuesday said ‘it was excellent visit with positive outcome and we can expect greater cooperation with Russia in the field of defence, particularly in air defence.’ Without going into details, he said that Russian authorities are forthcoming and they have agreed for further interaction between the two countries on the question of defence cooperation.

Pakistan is already using Russian made helicopters but the relationship is required to be diversified and expanded. The Russian choppers are providing useful service, he said. He said that Pakistan is interested in acquiring Russian machinery and equipment but it must be done under a streamlined system. The CAS stayed in Russian capital Moscow for four days and he will submit report pertaining to the trip to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

Nothing but good can come from expanded Russian-Pakistani relations.

Now wait for an official indian diplomatic tantrum...

This maybe irrelevant to the thread, but currently, Pakistan is looking for someone to finance the 'Basha Dam Project' (India opposes). Interestingly, Russia has shown interest and are favorites to merge into the project. Anyhow, the point is, there are many other things both Pakistan and Russia are cooperating in, that may raise a few eyebrows....

Certainly, India has so far done well in the West to oppose Pakistani contracts. i.e. U.S, U.K, and France. However, for some reason, there seems to be a shift of alliance here....

Pakistan should just start awarding all these projects to Russia without bid. No one else is really interested and the more they wait the pricier such projects get. Sorry for getting off topic.

^^
official from a country usually dont just wake up one day and say hey lets visit Russia. there are lots of diplomatic efforts go behind a visit. So, right I wont just start jumping up and down but i would be happy that relationships with Russia are improving

Forget the tantrum by India, but Pakistanis on this forum seem to be jumping up and down on a set of diplomatic niceties by a host nation where PAF chief went for a visit.. ;)
Well ! Comparing with past Russia have become more friendly to Pakistan specially under current circumstances, even their diplomacy contains seriousness to some extent. Wats more interesting is unlike U.S , Russia don't care much about indian concerns when it comes to personnal business. ;)

It will be foolish to assume that USA cares about Indian concerns.. It does so now because it suites its own objectives.. No country in this world (yes, including China and Russia), care for anything else except the national interests of their own.. and its a diplomatic tango all the countries play on an ongoing basis..

There is a saying in North India, that goes "Jatt mara tab jaaniye, jab tehrvi ho jaaye" .. Meaning believe it when it happens... ;)

looking for SAM's possibly!

Russia selling SAM's to Pakistan is highly doubtful ...unless india wants them to ....

or u know something that we don't ...:smokin:

If Pakistan thinks India-Russia relations are dead just because we threw out Mig-35 out of MMRCA and bought a couple of C-17s, C130J;s and P8i's, then you guys are in for a BIG surprise :D

Russia will only sell us those arms that get approved by India.

Which will mostly mean unarmed supply helicopters.

Small steps are always better then none.. so lets not get too excited yet be hopeful.. and for the people that are hoping that nothing ever happens between Pakistan & Russia understand everything is business simply don't expect to show your A$$ to the Rusians and then expect ever thing else to be gravy A saying we say here in the States ;) lets mind your own business and let Russia decide what it wants to do with who .
