Pakistan releases Rs.1.5bn in grants for Afghan university students

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Afghanistan said on Thursday the government had released Rs1.551 billion to the Higher Education Commission for Afghan students studying on scholarships in Pakistan.

Last year the HEC announced it would award around 3,000 scholarships to Afghan students under a four-year program. Around 1,000 Afghan students were also awarded grants last year as part of the HEC’s Allama Iqbal Scholarship Programme. Similar programs have been launched several times in previous years whereby selected students from Afghanistan have been able to attend universities across Pakistan.

“Government has released Rs.1.551 billion to HEC to meet expenses of Afghan students who are studying under Pakistan’s scholarship program,” PM’s special envoy to Kabul, Mohammad Sadiq, wrote on Twitter. “This important program for Afghan youth was starving for resources over last several months due to paucity of funds.”

About three million Afghans live in Pakistan, with more in neighboring Iran, many of them struggling to get full access to education, health and employment.

. . . .
Meanwhile, these students represent themselves as Pakistani Pushtoons in PTM protests and write love letters to India.

I used to think the following was a bigoted misstatement but I feel it has some merit for Afghans.

“agar kahat ul rijal uftad, azehan uns kamgiri yake afghan , doyum kamboh, soyam badzaat kashmiri”

It's soft power projection. Pakistan needs to think about the future of a post-US Afghanistan. They also need to squash all Pashtun nationalism less it becomes a threat. It's a small price to pay in the long run.

. .
Stop these Grants immediately. These Afghans are like you feeding King Cobra !!! Stop appeasing these people and others who work against Pakistan, and always spewing Venom.

Good gesture. I completely support it.

We need more Afghan students in Pakistani universities and maybe some partnerships to create some in Afghanistan also.

I am against government handouts in any form but this is 1000 times better than building a temple for five people in Islamabad.

1000 Afghans educated in Pakistan, sponsored by Pakistan will help us to strengthen relations with Afghanistan. You know Muslims should help each other and stop hating each other. That’s what we do.

And if an Afghan does something against the law please just go after the specific criminal and not the entire country or ethnicity. An Afghan with honor can never be Pro-Hindu and Anti-Pakistan, it’s like having a Buddhist pope. Not possible.

If this money had been spent on Frontier Corps and Border fencing, may be some more lives might have been saved.

Sometimes, one fails to understand Pakistani leadership. Afghans are not interested in mingling with Pakistan while we continue to waste scarce resources.

This money could also have been used for students in Gilgit Baltistan who seriously need Pakistan's federal govt help since India is trying to poison them.

there will be always leakages (bad/addicted/racist students) but if we can change mind of learned people... then they will be in main position in AFG, after war.. so they will have some sort o soft corner for PAK... so like an ambassador... or opinion makers about Pak... @JamD what do u say man?
I think we should have massive mobility between BDeshi an Pak unis too... so that those engineers/docs/artists etc can shape Pak opinion in their country @Signalian

our people are dying with hunger, and they are feeding the snakes ..

Useless .. Evenn i knew couple of students who were getting scholarship .. literally they don't study and enjoying the perks

It's soft power projection. Pakistan needs to think about the future of a post-US Afghanistan. They also need to squash all Pashtun nationalism less it becomes a threat. It's a small price to pay in the long run.

Good plan, Universities are the best breed ground for generating support for cause/ narratives.
Buying and creating pseudo sleeping cells on foreign soil is something every country has been doing e.g. soviet Union/ China are very good example.

It will bear fruits in long run. Don't worry about PDFians talking about poor state of affairs in Pakistan.

what a brainless leadership with this money we can build a university for our poor kids
It happens when establishment is more interested to do ungali in other's affairs .

It's required for power projection and buying hearts and mind to play your advocate, it's necessary evil every country tries to own.
