Pakistan receives GI tag for its Basmati



ISLAMABAD: Pakistan received the geographical indicator (GI) tag for its Basmati on January 26, 2021, according to official sources on Tuesday.

Through inter-provincial and public-private cooperation, the country has obtained the GI tag for its Basmati, which will strengthen its case against India in the European Union (EU). Since Basmati rice fetches higher prices in the international markets, India had attempted to block Pakistan’s trade in the EU by declaring that its Basmati was the geographically original one.

Pakistan had challenged the claim and, by registering its own GI for Basmati, it would claim the same protection of its Basmati in the EU as India. The Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) made major contribution to preparation of the book of specifications for Basmati. The book laid down the criteria of characteristics for Basmati, which needed to be followed by any producer or operator in Pakistan if they desire to obtain the licence to use the name.

Since REAP is a trade body which has been involved in exporting Basmati to the world and it is representative of Pakistan’s exporters of Basmati, it was best suited to offer insight into Basmati’s trade, characteristics, regions and history.

The registration of Basmati as a GI in Pakistan required the cooperation between the public and private sectors. The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) was designated as a registrant of Basmati by the federal government. TDAP moved an application for registration of Basmati with the Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO). The IPO sought assistance from the Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku and REAP. It mapped the regions where Basmati is grown by taking recommendations from all provinces. The process followed by the IPO had been an inclusive one and it brought all the stakeholders on board.

Pakistan Exposes India’s Lies by Securing GI Tag for Basmati Rice

Official sources have revealed that Pakistan has won the Geographical Indicator (GI) tag for its basmati rice. India had previously tried to block Pakistan’s trade in the EU by claiming its own basmati produce to be original.

Pakistan had challenged India’s claim by registering its own GI for basmati rice last year, which, as per sources, was accepted and approved by the European Union on 26 January.
The Executive Director of Intellectual Property Organisation (IPO), Meesaq Arif, tweeted a congratulatory note for Pakistan’s first acquisition of a GI tag.

The Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) was involved in securing the GI tag against India’s false claims. It had previously made enormous contributions for the devising of trade rules and regulations for local basmati rice and had provided consultation for various fronts of business affairs to guide producers and operators about the selling of basmati rice through merchants overseas.

After the production and distribution roadmap had been verified and a report sent to the concerned entities, Pakistan won its case for the GI tag for its basmati rice against Indian claims in the EU courts.

As a trade body, the REAP has been involved in exporting basmati rice to major international destinations. Upon deliberations pertaining to securing the GI tag, multiple entities have approached the organization to gain insight into Pakistan’s basmati rice trade, characteristics, regions, and history.

The process for securing the GI tag had been streamlined after a cooperative dialogue between the public and private sectors. In this regard, the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) had been tasked with the responsibility of registering the basmati rice trade routes and merchant profiles with the IPO.
The IPO had configured regulations with the REAP and the Rice Research Institute Kala Shah Kaku which had enabled them to map the regions where the basmati rice is grown. The process was according to standard procedures and had appealed to all the stakeholders who had been quick to collaborate on it.

If I was cheap, jealous and hateful I wouldn't say it is petty of Indian Govt. to get GI tag for itself for Basmati. I would support it if was for Darjeeling tea for example.
