Pakistan Received Mi17 Helicopter From US

Pakistan have received the four Mi17 helicopters of russian orign from american as promised. these helicopter were deleivered to the aviation wing of pakistan army in a ceremony at Chaklala Air Base.
Hope this will be benificial for our forces fighting insurgency and militancy in Swat and other parts of the NWFP.

the news in not open yet, we have to wait for some time to get the details!
but as far as the earlier reports were concerned the helicopter was comming on lease according to those reports. but we cannot say anything with surity at the moment. as i have repeatedly mentioned that the news is still not on the net so we have to wait for sometime to get the details or may be some person from within the PA can shed some light on this.
i hope some senior member can come up with details even before they are made public on net (that might be happening anytime soon now)

U.S. hands over four cargo helicopters to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, June 10 (Xinhua) -- The United States has handed over four cargo helicopters to Pakistan on Wednesday, local Ary One World TV channel reported.

The four MI-17 cargo helicopters were handed over to Pakistan Army at the Charklala airbase, said the report.

The helicopters will be used for fight against terrorism and to help the affecters in the conflict areas where the military operation is going on against militants in the northwest.

the ARY news channel just displayed the pics of the choppers being unloaded from a cargo plane, they dont seem to have any pylons for weapon load so i guess they will be used for transporting the troops! it may even be so that the pylon were disassembled for there transportation to pakistan and can now be refitted if required!

can someone have more details?

well it is never bad when comming for free or at a cheap rate!
the helicopters are being given as a support for war against terror and they give us what they like
anyway it is better to have something from them rather then nothing!

why not some attack hellis

yes we need a squadron or two of modren attatck helicopters but they wont be commin our way so easily now, speciall not from US!
but yes we also do need transport helicopters. the Mil Mi17 is a very good helicopter as it can transport good amount of cargo and do not need much of an air escort as they can be mounted by weapons also! though the report says"cargo helicopter" but still the fit in this role as well for the PA! specially keeping in mind the amount we have spent to get them!

that surely is a big positive point! the enhanced fleet of the Mi17 will help us tackel earthquake and flood relife operations apart from the duty in war against militants in NWFP, that will be currently assigned to the choppers!
here is one from our existing fleet involved in such an operation:


i do remember that PA is carrying lot of paradrop and heli landing mission in this operation in order to tighten its grip on the militants making sure that the operation cause least amount of damage to civilian population. these helicopters are also meant for the same purpose and seeing the efficiency of such operation the americans must have been convinced to deleiver these machines to us!
all in all all tribut to general Ashfaq Pervaiz Kayani how have demanded and then convinced the US to give these helicopters to us!

ISLAMABAD: In response to a request from the government of Pakistan, the United States delivered four MI-17 cargo helicopters to the Pakistani Army Wednesday, DawnNews reported.

The additional helicopters are meant to enhance Pakistan’s capabilities in current operations against militant extremists, and its efforts to care for hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis who have been displaced from their homes by the fighting.

The US is in the process of identifying additional MI-17s that may be made available to Pakistan in the future. On May 28, US Ambassador Patterson to Pakistan announced a $26.6 million award to the UN’s World Food Program funding urgent humanitarian relief efforts. May 19, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton committed $110 million in immediate humanitarian assistance to assist IDPs.

This includes approximately $28 million in agricultural commodities including 50,000 metric tons of wheat valued at $16.8 million and 6,800 metric tons of vegetable oil valued at $11.2 million.

The US has also provided $4.9 million to purchase tents, blankets, cooking sets, jerry cans, soap, and bedding. Americans also provided logistical equipment including generators and transformers to power water pumps, laptop computers, and rental cars to assist in emergency support operations.

Since 2002, the United States has provided nearly $3.4 billion to Pakistan to improve economic growth, education, health, and governance and to assist with earthquake reconstruction

its not a big deal to put pylons and rockets onto the Mi-17. half hour of work and you can fix 6 x 32 x 57mm rocket pods - thats nearly 192 rockets onto the bird. devastating firepower. it cannot be used in urban insurgency but would be an asset in the open tribal areas
