Pakistan President sacks chief justice

Really and how did you come up with another fantastic connection between Army deals, kickbacks and Musharaf?? Please expand.

Musharraf is in the wrong in this case, however that does not take away from the good also done under his leadership. In any case, Pakistan will weather this storm as well by the grace of the Almighty.

The man at the helm of the country allegedly been “in the line of fire” for some time, and now stands in the mouth of the cannon.

Yes I read that line in Shamshad Ahmed's column too but I think he used it for somebody else. I just hope Musharraf backs off as the times aptly recommends to Musharraf "Good generals know when to retreat”. So now is the time for Musharraf to back off.

“I will inform nation about SJC decision,” says Musharraf

GUJARANWALA: President General Pervez Musharraf has said that he would himself inform the nation on television about judgment of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) in presidential reference against the non-functional Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry.

Addressing a public meeting at Jinnah Stadium Gujranwala on Thursday, Musharraf said that he respects judiciary and believes that the Supreme Judicial Council would do full justice in the matter of the non-functional chief justice.

He said that he would himself inform the nation on television about the decision taken by the SJC.

Musharraf said that some people are using lawyers to serve their personal political goals. They would be exposed before the nation after the SJC decision, he said. The time has now ripe to expose the political parties and politicians using this issue to take political mileage, he said.

President said that a man recently slain a woman minister of Punjab in Gujranwala in the name of religion. “We would throw these elements out of the society who are involved in such heinous acts using the name of religion” he said.

Musharraf said there was so-called democracy in Pakistan in the past but we have introduced genuine democracy in the country.

English lawyers, Blair's wife support ousted top Pakistan judge

LONDON (updated on: March 16, 2007, 02:07 PST): A group of England's lawyers, including Prime Minister Tony Blair's wife Cherie Booth, voiced concern on Thursday at the dismissal of chief justice by President Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistani lawyers and opposition groups staged violent protests this week after military ruler Musharraf suspended Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry last Friday on charges of misconduct and abuse of power.

"The reports of the humiliating treatment of the chief justice of Pakistan is causing great international unease, and is not in the interest of the government of Pakistan, and lowers the international esteem of Pakistan," the 70 lawyers said in a petition.

"We wish to show our solidarity for our professional colleagues in Pakistan, who are at the forefront of upholding the constitution and the rights of the people of Pakistan, whose welfare and security are under threat.

"We call upon the government of Pakistan to allow the chief justice a fair, free and public trial.

The lawyers called on the Pakistani government "to endorse the need for an impartial, politically independent judiciary, whose role is to uphold the constitution without fear or favour.

"We would like to send a message of goodwill to the chief justice of Pakistan and assure him that the international legal community support the stance that he has taken in support of the constitution, and we hope that the government will listen to their own people, and the voices of others outside Pakistan."

President Musharraf said on Thursday that it was up to Pakistan's judiciary to resolve the snowballing controversy over his attempt to sack the country's top judge.

US expresses 'deep concern' Pakistan chief justice ouster

WASHINGTON (updated on: March 15, 2007, 23:50 PST): The United States expressed its 'deep concern' on Thursday over the dismissal of chief justice by President Pervez Musharraf, a key Washington ally in the war on terrorism.

"It is a matter of deep concern and we believe that the resolution of this matter should take place in a way that is completely transparent and strictly in accordance with Pakistan's laws," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said.

He was responding to a reporter's question about Musharraf's decision last week to suspend Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on charges of misconduct and abuse of power -- a move which has set off numerous protests by the political opposition.

Chaudhry appeared before Supreme Judicial Council on Tuesday to challenge his suspension, which he called unconstitutional, and the panel is due to hear his case again on Friday.

McCormack said US diplomats in Pakistan had discussed the issue with government officials in an effort to understand the situation and that Washington will continue monitoring the matter "very closely".

"It's essential for any developing democracy to adhere to the rule of law and conduct any investigations, any proceedings that may follow on from those investigations in a clear, above board, transparent manner that strictly accords with Pakistan's laws," he said.

Bush ally accused of attempting to politicise US justice
By Andrew Gumbel in Los Angeles
Published: 14 March 2007

President Bush's attorney general, Alberto Gonzales, was fighting for his political life last night as a major scandal erupted over the firing of eight politically-inconvenient federal prosecutors - a move many senior Democrats described as a brazen attempt by the White House to compromise the independence of the US justice system.
Mr Gonzales, one of President Bush's oldest and most loyal cohorts, acknowledged in a hastily-convened news conference that "mistakes were made" but said he stood by his decision to dismiss the eight prosecutors at the end of last year.

Hours earlier, his chief of staff, Kyle Sampson, resigned over the affair, and the Democratic leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee insisted Mr Gonzales, and possibly other senior administration officials, should resign too.

"US attorneys have always been above politics, and this administration has blatantly manipulated the US attorney system to serve its political needs," Senator Chuck Schumer of New York said. "The president must clarify his role... There's a cloud over the White House."

Mr Sampson's resignation, Schumer added, "does not take the heat off the attorney general. In fact, it raises the temperature".

The Bush White House thus finds itself assailed on yet another front just a week after Scooter Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, was convicted on perjury charges.

Just as the administration has been accused of playing politics with intelligence on Iraq or on scientific research into global warming, it now faces the charge that it tried to manipulate the federal prosecution system for its own partisan purposes.

The Democratic leadership in Congress first became suspicious when it received a tip that the eight prosecutors were dismissed because they refused to follow up alleged voter fraud in electoral races that Republican candidates had narrowly lost.

That suspicion took on much greater substance on Monday with the publication of an e-mail exchange between Mr Sampson at the Justice Department, and Harriet Miers, who served until recently as the Bush administration's top lawyer.

Ms Miers originally suggested firing all 93 federal prosecutors and replacing them with political appointees - a suggestion deemed impractical because of the red tape involved in the process.

Mr Sampson, for his part, offered her a list of federal prosecutors "we now should consider pushing out". All the names on his list ended up on the chopping block.

The e-mail exchange has clearly contradicted earlier assertions by Gonzales and others that the dismissals had been decided by the Justice Department independently.

In his news conference, Mr Gonzales sought to blame the contradiction on communication problems at the Justice Department. He claimed not to know about the contacts between Mr Sampson and Ms Miers until after he had testified to a congressional committee that no such contacts had taken place.

"Obviously I am concerned about the fact that information - incomplete information - was communicated or may have been communicated to the Congress," he said.

"I believe very strongly in our obligation to ensure that when we provide information to the Congress, it is accurate and it is complete. And I very dismayed that that may not have occurred here."

The people involved in the scandal are all very close to President Bush. Ms Miers served as his personal lawyer when he was governor of Texas and earned herself a short-lived nomination to the Supreme Court for her pains. (The nomination was shot down in September 2005.)

Mr Gonzales, meanwhile, was elevated by Mr Bush to the Texas supreme court, then followed him to Washington as his first White House counsel.

Senior Democrats vowed to launch a full investigation. They were particularly suspicious of the role of Karl Rove, President Bush's top political advisor, one of whose protégés replaced a dismissed prosecutor in Arkansas.

Really and how did you come up with another fantastic connection between Army deals, kickbacks and Musharaf?? Please expand.

That was no propoganda stuff from me, you can easily corelate what i said to what was said in the BBC article i quoted prior to that.

I will just clarify incase if i didnt make it clear, Mushraff needs strong generals to be on his side to be in power. Any investigation that would put those generals in a spot of bother would definitly make them ask Mushraff do something about it. And Mushraff has to oblige.

Now when you have such close guys making money thru kickbacks or from the aid money recieved its definite mushraff would be given a share of it for being the facilitator,. Easy money is always welcome, isnt it.

And to those who believe Pakistan has progressed under Mush, lemme tell them again, you are all mistaken. Pakistan as a federation has weakened (a fact Mush himself accepted). We have killed our own leaders, sent a few into exile, put our scientific hero under house arrest till death, dismissed the elected president, two chief justices, countless army officers, killed our own people in tribal areas, compromised our kashmir policy, allowed India to fence the borders (which a few years back mush seemed so interested in violating). Is that what you call good

I think he has done a fair job to the country, but judgement can be passed only in hindsight probably after 20 years.

The economy is doing good, aid money or not.

The only thorn and the major one, is how he has gone about with the WoT. He has acted and behaved to please the US/NATO more than the local audience.
